Summary

  1. Eng 72-3published at 18 overs

Just a single off Prasidh Krishna's latest over as England tick down towards the close aiming to not lose another wicket. It's certainly settled down considerably following that frantic passage of play.

This England pair have taken the sting out of the game. India were buzzing about before.

Joe Root has played nice and controlled but I'm perplexed by the tactics of India so far.

I think India are spooked by England's big chase here a few years ago and what happened at Headingley.

Australia's batting troubles are continuing in the West Indies. They have slipped to 110-5 after winning the toss and doing that unfashionable thing of batting first. Beau Webster and Alex Carey are now together at the crease. Follow that one here.

  4. Eng 71-3published at 17 overs

After one over of Prasidh Krishna, Shubman Gill has seen enough. He decides it's time for some left-arm spin and throws Ravindra Jadeja the ball.

Testing lengths from Jadeja as both Harry Brook and Joe Root stoutly defend, waiting for the chance to prod and poke singles.

The pitch is still a beauty. The three dismissals were iffy. It's still good and, if England are ready to put in the hard yards, it should be a decent score for someone.

I don’t see what the fuss is about? We have the two best players in the world at the crease on a flat pitch against an inexperienced bowling line-up. We can knock off 800 and bowl them out on the final day much like we did in Pakistan.

  7. Eng 67-3published at 16 overs

Nitish Kumar Reddy introduced by Shubman Gill who delivers a relatively unthreatening first over. Just the single off it, with Joe Root quite watchful.

If you just walked into the ground now and saw this field you'd think England must be dominating.

There's three India players on the boundary. I don't get why teams don't bring the field up against England in this situation.

  9. Eng 66-3published at 15 overs

Prasidh Krishna into the attack and he gives Harry Brook a freebie on his pads first up, which the England batter happily tucks into by working it through mid-wicket for four.

The India seamer tightens up in the rest of the over and Brook and Joe Root content to block it out.

Has anyone in that dressing room even floated the idea of getting away from this game 1-0 up rather than most likely drawing 1-1?

    Brook hits Siraj for six

Harry Brook becomes really dangerous when the ball doesn't do anything and he can just dominate.

He can be as good as anyone in this era when it comes to dominating the bowler.

  12. Emg 61-3published at 14 overs

    Trail by 526 runs

Mohammed Siraj is pushing it up near Joe Root's toes.

Root shuffles across and works one off his pads fine for four. Siraj is going though his full range of exaggerated reactions, attempting to create a bit of theatre out in the middle.

Siraj attempts to unsettle England's batters by switching to round the wicket but neither Root nor Harry Brook appear unduly troubled.

  13. How's stat?!published at 18:05 British Summer Time

    Rufus Bullough

We’ve had more swing this session than in any other of the match so far.

India have found 1.1° of swing in with their new ball, nearly double what England found in the first hour with either of theirs previously.

  14. Eng 55-3published at 13 overs

Now this was a little bit daft, Harry.

A delivery angled into Brook by Akash Deep to finish the over and he opens the face, attempting to guide it, despite there being three slips in place.

    Thankfully, he misses.

Whether they're 50-3 or 500-3, Harry Brook doesn't mind. He will stand tall and smoke it through the off side.

Even if Harry Brook makes 60 doing this it does nothing for England. England at this point in the game need to bat for as long as possible. Brook going death or glory does nothing for our chances to win the game or series.

  17. Eng 55-3published at 12.2 overs

Harry Brook with some more conventional strokeplay, elegantly flicking Akash Deep square for four.

Hopefully that orthodoxy more to people's tastes.

It's a nice session for India here. They know they can relax and get a decent bowling spell.

Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep have bowled six overs apiece already. There's time to apply pressure to the batters.

  19. Eng 50-3published at 12 overs

The way England play these days, Glen.

Harry Brook attempts to back away to the final ball of Mohammed Siraj's over and slap him through the covers but is unable to connect.

I said it in the last Test, and I'll say it again... what on earth is Harry Brook doing?
