Summary

  1. Eng 25-3published at 7.4 overs

Mohammed Siraj loving the theatre here, twice beating Harry Brook outside his off stump and following up with exaggerated reactions.

Brook responds by charging down the pitch to his third ball and slapping one into the pitch. India's slip cordon start to pipe up.

That was taken as noncholantly as you like at first slip. Nair made that look very easy.

A poor shot from Crawley. He didn't move his feet at all. He was asking for trouble.

It wasn't a length where you can play that shot. He was stuck on the crease trying to free his arms. It was a poor shot.

    Crawley c Nair b Siraj (Eng 25-3)

Zak Crawley wafts at one outside off stump which was just shaping away and edges Mohammed Siraj to the hands of Karun Nair at first slip.

Nair holds on. India's slip catching has been superb.

Tired bodies and tired minds for England here, you sense.

Akash Deep has actually got a good record against left-handers in his eight Tests so far. He has 11 wickets at an average of 20.5 when bowling to left-handers, so his dismissal of Ben Duckett won't have been a surprise to the tourists. Against right-handers, he has six wickets at 52.8.

  6. Eng 25-2published at 7 overs

Zak Crawley is nervously chewing gum.

Having not scored a run since his bounty from the first over, he pushes Akash Deep through the covers for a couple.

Next ball, Crawley flicks one of his pads for four. It's in the air but the diving Shubman Gill, in a close-catching position, cannot get a hand on it.

Out in the Caribbean, Australia's batting is once again misfiring. The tourists are 93-4 with Sam Konstas, Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green and Steve Smith all back in the shed. Follow that one via our scorecard here.

India are going defensive in the field. When you have runs on the board, you want to attack with the new ball. This is not the time to defend. Even if they get a couple of boundaries, Shubman shouldn't mind that.

I'm not saying over-attack but you want to keep a square leg. It can be a catching position for Zak Crawley.

  9. Eng 18-2published at 6 overs

Mohammed Siraj has hands on his head midway through his third over.

A nip-backer to Zak Crawley hits the top of the England opener's thigh, but there's an inside edge on it which kills the appeal.

Later in the over Siraj hoops one away to a tentative prod from Joe Root.

You can hear the noise of the players, the noise of the crowd. This is the atmosphere that's been a little lacking.

  12. Eng 16-2published at 5 overs

Joe Root, collar turned up, looks nice and compact at the crease as he defends against Akash Deep.

India continue to apply pressure, but Root manages to get himself off the mark of his fifth ball by flicking Deep behind square for a couple.

Ollie Pope's motto remains 'Feast or famine'. He gets a big score then plays dreadfully for 10 matches: rinse and repeat. Amazingly talented player, but not a No. 3. Sorry.

I'm very impressed with how Akash Deep has bowled his second over.

He was under pressure in his first. The way he's come back is the sign of a good bowler.

  15. Eng 13-2published at 4 overs

After a really poor first over, Akash Deep was absolutely on the money with his lines and lengths. A very tough 90 minutes or so for England here.

Mohammed Siraj keeps the pressure on with a maiden. India hunting while the lacquer is still on this new ball.

Joe Root comes out with England having a mountain to climb.

Suddenly Akash Deep is on a hat-trick. England are in trouble. India have gone bang, bang.

    Who needs Jasprit Bumrah, eh?

This was a nice delivery from Deep. It was pitched up on the off stump and it wasn't there to flick. Ollie Pope should have played it with a straighter bat.

After the fumble, KL Rahul grabbed it really well.
