More from Pope on Sri Lanka: "They have an experienced batting line up who have scored lots of Test runs so credit to them for the way they have played. They have pushed us right to the end. All our bowlers were high class and we felt like we could take wickets.

On Joe Root: "He is just different level. His consistency is amazing, that is why everyone looks up to him. I think he is England's greatest ever batter, especially in this format. I couldn't speak any higher of him."

On Gus Atkinson: "Everyone saw our reaction when he got his century. He had the crowd in the palm of his hand on 99. To go and get a hundred at Lord's is seriously special to credit to him."

On targeting a clean sweep: "That would be an awesome thing to do. We will enjoy this win, but draw a line and go again at The Oval."

England captain Ollie Pope to BBC Sport: "Getting the series win is very special. I've really enjoyed it. Hopefully I will get a few runs next week.

"I found last week a bit of a whirlwind, this week I played a pretty average shot in first innings, that can happen with batting it isn't down to the captaincy.

"That's the challenge of cricket. any player goes through bad patches of form. I am not hiding from that. The best players bounce back to form quickly and that's what I have to do."

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

It is very tricky as a batting captain. With Pope now, you don't want to go too technical mid-series because then, you're overcomplicating things.

It is not the time for changes, it's about clearing your head and keep things simple. He just needs to get himself through the first 20 balls and go from there because at the moment, he's not a great starter.

Player of the Match Gus Atkinson to BBC Sport: "I have had a good few games here, I don't know what it is. I enjoy bowling down the slope but the batting, I'm not sure!"

On bowling with Chris Woakes: "I think we bowled really well together. We try and do similar things, speak to each other and compliment each other really well on all surfaces. He is quite a similar bowler to me and it is working well so far."

On taking five wickets in the second innings: "I think the Hundred took it out of me more than I thought as I was mentally fried. But today I felt like I had more energy so I bowled a lot better and could back that up in the second innings."

Is he targeting more hundreds?: 100%. You don't know what you can do until you do it. That's the standard now. I will go forward and try to score big runs."

On being made to work hard for the Sri Lanka wickets: "We knew it would be difficult but everyone bowled so well. I thought Olly Stone ran in so hard on his first game back, it was not easy. The whole bowling unti did well and complemented each other

On Ollie Pope's captaincy: "It is not a big difference (to Ben Stokes). It was a pretty smooth transition. He was really good tactically - you saw those two wickets at leg slip. He is really good at listening to other people and it has worked really well so far."

It's such a shame that it's taken Sri Lanka so long to get into the Test match on both occasions. If you look at their team on paper, it's very well balanced with most areas covered.

They have been undercooked and under-prepared, not helped by making the wrong decision at the toss.

Gus Atkinson has now taken 33 wickets in his first five Tests. Only one England player has taken more wickets in their first five matches and that was Nick Cook.

Two other England bowlers have taken 33 in their first five, and they are two greats - Fred Trueman and Tom Richardson.

I hope Gus Atkinson never changes and he sticks to that deadpan attitude, I love it. He will have tougher challenges to come but he's just being himself and enjoying the game.

He has a very simple, very uncomplicated approach.

Player of the match Gus Atkinson to BBC Test Match Special: "It is a long time since I got a hundred anywhere so to get it here is pretty special. I look forward to challenging myself more

"It was one of those days where things went my way. I felt good at the crease, I timed the ball, played my natural game, was aggressive and when the ball was there I hit it.

"Looking forward I'm going to try and score as many runs as I can. Though the pressure is on now! If I can score as many runs as I can it would be huge for this team.

"I didn't feel like a bowled as well as I did against West Indies, but things went my way. As a bowling unit we worked so well. All round we were brilliant.

"It is a big step up from County Cricket. I'm pretty inexperienced and I'm sure there will be harder challenges going forward. The intensity is a big step up."

  12. 'A pleasing week'published at 17:24 British Summer Time 1 September

England captain Ollie Pope on BBC Test Match Special: "Good win, yes. Some special individual performances from Gus and Joe, too. It's been a pleasing week.

"It was an unbelievable effort from Gus, it's pretty special. I wouldn't say I was expecting it from him this week but I knew he was capable of it at some point, I've seen him bat a lot for Surrey so to go on and perform like that was just awesome.

"He's a very relaxed person, he doesn't overcomplicate anything, really. It's one of his best attributes as a person, he takes everything in his stride.

"Absolutely [annoyed to miss out on runs]. It's the way cricket goes, you have good phases and bad phases. It hasn't worked for me over the past two weeks but I'll be working hard to put that right in the last Test. In an ideal world you want to lead from the front with the bat but we're 2-0 up in the series, I haven't contributed in the way I'd have liked but I'd still take that every day of the week.

"Cricket can feel like an individual game within a team game but there's a bigger picture."

On his reviews: "The guys behind the stumps aren't helping me much, are they! It's been weird. But yeah, hopefully I can get one next week!"

Ex-Sri Lanka all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

If you want to beat a good team like England you have to set up the game yourself. You need to do the hard work early then the game gets easier. So mistakes all round. They need to look at what their strengths are, stick to the plan and execute accordingly.

I think they can beat England next week. They didn't play that well at Old Trafford but were not totally outplayed. They can create that pressure once again. No team is unbeatable. You have to believe.

I liked the honesty, he's got a smile on his face and he's not hiding behind the decision or trying to justify it. He knows he got that wrong.

I thought after Old Trafford that if Sri Lanka batted first, got 300 on the board and put England under a bit of early pressure, they could be in with a chance.

But as soon as they chose to bowl first, particularly when Joe Root got to around 40, it was game over.

  15. 'I would've batted first'published at 17:18 British Summer Time 1 September

Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva on BBC Test Match Special: "Yes, it's always disappointing to lose as a team. There's a lot we could have done better. We are a much better team than we have shown this week but I trust my boys to bounce back at The Oval.

"I would have batted first [if I had my time again at the toss]. Definitely. I got it wrong. But our top order had struggled in the first match and I was thinking I should give them a break and see what our bowlers could do. But actually we did really well in the first innings when we were bowling.

"They were six down but Joe Root and Gus Atkinson took the game from us. Joe has proven himself as a world-class player for a long time now.

"We have got to improve on the first innings whether we bat or bowl first, that's what I will be telling my boys is that we've got to start better. We have been good in the second innings so we've got to get in the game earlier."

I don't think England will change the team for The Oval. The bowlers shouldn't be too tired after another short Test match and Sri Lanka are on the ropes, they'll want to keep that momentum going.

Three wickets fell in quick succession after tea. The first was Dhananjaya de Silva, who chopped on to give Gus Atkinson his fourth wicket.

It was lost at the toss. It was a poor decision.

Sri Lanka had England in a tricky position at 216-6, they fought so hard despite being behind the game from that call. But it was Gus Atkinson who came in and gave England the impetus.

Can you have joint men of the match? Surely Root and Atkinson both deserve it. There can't have been a better performance that misses out on man of the match!
