Another cloudy morning is forecast in London with a touch of rain around. It shouldn't be enough to cause any significant delays (hopefully) and it is currently dry, so we should start on time. The sun should also break out in the afternoon.

There is a risk of thunderstorms, but only if we are really unlucky.

    Cross your fingers people.

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

It's not been through crash, bang, wallop. He is the greatest because he's a wonderful role model as well. He's a fantastic person and a great player.

The opposition pretty much always have to have four fielders behind square on the off side because he's just so good.

You take away four fielders and all of a sudden there are gaps everywhere else.

He's just playing normally, rotating the strike without taking any risk. How often do you look up and he has scored 25 in no time at all?

He may be a record-breaking England batter, but you are not going to get Joe Root boasting about his achievements.

Calm and humble, yet focused and determined. A fruitful combination for a Test cricketer.

  4. Root edges England closer to winpublished at 10:35 British Summer Time 1 September

A grey Lord's day was lit up by Joe Root, who hit a record-breaking 34th Test century to help edge England closer to victory.

Root’s second century of the second Test took him past Sir Alastair Cook for the most tons by an England batter. His 103 from 111 deliveries was also his quickest in Test cricket.

When Root became the last wicket to fall, England were 251 all out and Sri Lanka left an improbable record 483 to level the series.

Sri Lanka had reached 53-2, 430 adrift, when bad light halted play.

The tourists will need something pretty special if they are to avoid defeat here.

Joe Root was the shining light that pierced the Lord's gloom on Saturday, helping to put England in a commanding position.
