Oh dear, has Dimuth Karunaratne run himself out?

He goes for a risky third run on the throw and Jamie Smith whips off the bails.

This is going to be close...

Karunaratne has got the game and he's got all the experience to make the most of this flat pitch if he wants it.

He's sticking it out there for his team, with Sri Lanka under a heap of pressure. Big opportunity at Lord's for him here.

  4. 50 runs

50 for Dimuth Karunaratnepublished at 34.5 overs

It is a second half-century at Lord's for Dimuth Karunaratne.

He guides the ball down to third man for four to move to 49, before dropping the ball into the off side and running a single to reach 50.

A battling performance in a very difficult match situation for Sri Lanka.

I live 10 minutes walk away from Lord's. I’d love to come down for a few hours on a beautiful day but refuse to pay those prices. It’s such a shame, £10 tickets on the door and you would have the stands (bars and food stands) full. I came to the first day of the West Indies Test and had a great day, tickets were £130 I think. Looking at the scenes surrounding the Oasis reunion, I feel the ticketing system for events in the UK has become completely elitist, everyone should be able to enjoy sport, music, culture not just those willing to pay the highest price.

Fair points raised, Anthony. The issue would be for spectators who paid full price in advance. BUT you would think there is a mechanism to reimburse the difference and/or offer discount for future tickets.

  6. SL 82-3published at 34 overs

No immediate returns from the short stuff for Olly Stone. Dimuth Karunaratne is looking pretty settled now.

A note that we have an extended session today to make up for the time lost on Saturday evening. Lunch is now scheduled for 13:15 BST.

The field has scattered. Time for some short stuff from Olly Stone.

  8. SL 80-3published at 33 overs

There is definitely something in it for the bowlers just outside Dimuth Karunaratne's off stump. Another delivery from Matthew Potts keeps low and evades Karunaratne's attempted cut.

A few of you have texted in about the overseas TMS link. It should be corrected now.

A few things on the crowd, or lack of it. If it's taken an empty Lord's for anyone to think tickets are too expensive, they haven't been paying attention. Tickets have been extortionate for ages.

If it's a shock to see Test cricket played in front of so few spectators, it shouldn't be. This is a decent crowd for a lot of the world.

If there is a feeling that day four against Sri Lanka does not provide value, that is on English cricket as much as anyone. For too long this country has ignored the plight of Test cricket across the world because the game here is strong. But England need quality opposition to sustain our cricketing economy. Administrators have been asleep at the wheel.

It's a long way to go but if Sri Lanka win this, it'll be the greatest win in the history of Test cricket.

  12. SL 79-3published at 32 overs

Olly Stone is pushing close to 85mph in his first over of the day. Not bad for a loosener.

With the relative luxury of four seamers, Ollie Pope can keep rotating to maintain the pressure on the Sri Lanka batters.

Karunaratne has missed a few pull shots, I'm not sure you can trust the bounce completely on this pitch.

  14. SL 77-3published at 31 overs

Dimuth Karunaratne shows more intent but without success this time. He goes for a wild pull from a ball outside off stump and the ball goes through to Jamie Smith.

It looks like Karunaratne is going to have a bit of fun though - and why not?

Another change for England. Here is Olly Stone.

First change of the morning as Matthew Potts enters the attack.

  16. SL 75-3published at 30 overs

It is a third boundary of the over for Dimuth Karunaratne, though this is a touch streaky. It is an unconvincing push outside off stump that catches the edge but flies just wide of gully.

A welcome show of positivity from Karunaratne though, who had been stuck in a bit of a rut for the first 20 minutes or so.

  17. SL 70-3published at 29.3 overs

That will help Dimuth Karunaratne's confidence.

He is offered a bit of width by Gus Atkinson and plays an uppish drive that races through the covers for four.

The next ball is short and pulled away through mid-wicket to the rope.

  18. How's stat?!published at 11:43 British Summer Time 1 September

From CricViz...Harry Brook has taken 50 catches with just five drops across his international career - an impressive catch success rate of 90.9%, which is well above the global average of 79.8%.

Dimuth Karunaratne is just hanging in for survival. He needs to start being more positive, even in defence, because at the moment he's just hanging back.

As a batter you've got to find a way of counter-punching when you are under such pressure.

Here is how Prabath Jayasuriya was dismissed a few moments ago, with Harry Brook taking a smart catch in the slips.
