One hand came off the bat, but I think it hit the glove that was still on the handle. You could see Angelo Mathews asking him, but Karunaratne knew.

    Karunaratne c Smith b Stone 55 (SL 115-4)

England have toiled do far this morning but they have finally make the breakthrough as we edge towards lunch.

It is short and down leg-side from Olly Stone, Karunaratne looks to fend it off but takes one hand off the bat and the ball brushes past the handle and escapes through to Jamie Smith.

An obdurate innings from Karunaratne comes to an end.

Another problem has to be how London centric the stadium rotation is. Out of six Tests this summer 50% are being played in London. If this game were at Headingley the stands would be full but instead we have empty stands at Lord's and no Tests played in Leeds all summer. Maybe I'm just biased though as if it were at Headingley I could be watching the game live instead of on the TV.

Some smart fielding from Matthew Potts, who claws the ball back from the square leg boundary to save four following a well directed cut shot from Dimuth Karunaratne.

That momentarily roused the crowd from their slumber.

I don’t have an issue per se with Lord's charging high ticket prices if they sell the seats at those prices. But what’s outrageous is Lord's demanding two Tests a year and then selling tickets at prices that people *don’t* pay for, leading to empty seats and Lord's not making money. My view would be if a ground’s unsold seats are more than a small percentage of seats per day, they lose the right to host a Test match the following year. That would lead to better or at least more calculated pricing.

That's a good length delivery in that dangerous channel outside off stump from Olly Stone that beats Angelo Mathews all ends up.

That delivery is the exception rather than the norm so far this morning, with Sri Lanka looking pretty comfortable.

A reminder that we have an extended session this morning to make up some of the time lost on Saturday. Lunch is scheduled for 13:15 BST.

It's not just theoretical, I was one (of presumably many) who went online last night to see if I could pick up a ticket and was shocked by the prices. I love Test cricket, but £100 for a day that everyone attending knows isn't actually a contest? Get people who actually understand and care about the game to run things, because the current lot clearly don't.

England were right to opt against the review for that Shoaib Bashir lbw shout - snicko showed the faintest of edges off the bat.

It is tricky for Shoaib Bashir because he is so tall, quite often the ball will bounce too much for lbw shouts.

    Mathews 25, Karunaratne 52

A huge appeal goes up as Angelo Mathews misses a slog sweep to a delivery that straightens on him from Shoaib Bashir and hits the pad.

The umpire says no and England - having burned two appeals today already - opt against a review.

Mathews tries again at the end of the over and catches it sweetly this time, sending the ball clattering to the boundary.

I’m at Lord’s today solely by dint of it being payday weekend - the Mound and Tavern stands are empty and the crowd is tame. This is the perfect Sunday to watch an exciting, young and dynamic England side try to take a series win. The administrators harp on about growing the game but never seize these great opportunities to do so.

Olly Stone persists with the short stuff and tempts Angelo Mathews into an attempted pull that escapes the edge and whistles through to Jamie Smith.

Stone has a long chat with Chris Woakes before the final ball of the over. England are having to do a bit of thinking here.

So far in the series, England haven't had to steer away from Plan A. Sri Lanka have got to throw them off and make them think differently.

I paid £25 to watch England v Australia in the Ashes at Edgbaston on day 5. I prayed for rain on the earlier days, which allowed day 5 play. We then spent a small fortune on drinks, food and the headphones. Without the price being £25, I would never had the opportunity to watch England and it's a day I'll never forget. It should be accessible for everyone.

A bit of a thrash from Angelo Mathews. England have left lots of gaps in the field and he couldn't resist any longer.

    Target 483

Slip, leg slip and short leg in place for Shoaib Bashir to try and pin down Angelo Mathews.

Mathews responds with an aggressive, but slightly out of control heave towards deep mid-wicket.

    England will not mind that.

Stephan is right, of course. There is a neat irony that Bazball, designed to save Test cricket, has led to sped up games that are more or less over by day three and finished on day four. This means often only days one and two have balance and jeopardy.

Ollie Pope looks deep in thought. These Sri Lanka wickets are not going to come easily.

For those of a nervous disposition like me I have checked tomorrow's weather. There is a bit of rain around but nothing that should wash the game out. If Sri Lanka somehow make it that far there will be enough play for a result.
