There's a bit more oomph in the surface today and Chris Woakes has got the ball on a string.

  2. SL 61-3published at 29 overs

    How's your luck Dimuth Karunaratne?

The Sri Lanka opener pushes the ball into the covers and thinks about a run, but some sharp fielding and quick throw from Olly Stone sees him turn and scramble for his crease.

Direct hit and he would have been gone by a distance.

The next ball finds the edge but drops just short of the slips.

    England sense an opening here.

This is a great opportunity for a Sri Lankan batter or two to get themselves a big score. You can't complain about the conditions.

A couple have kept low but there are no demons.

    Target 483

Gus Atkinson is mixing up his length to new batter Angelo Mathews, banging one in short before going for the attempted yorker.

Mathews then goes fishing outside off stump from a delivery with a bit of extra bounce that very nearly snares the edge.

The former Sri Lanka skipper is getting a bit of a working over early on.

    Excellent fact, Alison.

Here is Frank stinging the palms of Joe Root in the slips a few minutes ago.

    Here's a fun fact.

Dimuth Karunaratne's first name is actually Frank.

  7. SL 61-3published at 27 overs

Chris Woakes gets one to shape away from new batter Angelo Mathews and whizz through to Jamie Smith, drawing roars of approval from the four slips.

Mathews gets off mark next ball with a push into the leg-side.

Nice catch from Harry Brook, it was going quickly because Jayasuriya really pushed at it.

There wasn't much footwork as you'd expect from a lower order batter.

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 26.2 overs

    Jayasuriya c Brook b Woakes 4 (SL 60-3)

    Edged and gone.

Minimal footwork from Prabath Jayasuriya as he flashes at a Chris Woakes delivery outside off stump and catches a thick edge that is smartly taken by Harry Brook at second slip.

It's so strange. There must've been some kind of noise because it wasn't a half-hearted appeal, it was full-throttle.

Ollie Pope is yet to get a review right.

  11. Not outpublished at 25.4 overs

    Nothing on snicko.

England look a little nonplussed. They definitely heard something.

    Karunaratne was not going anywhere.

  13. England reviewpublished at 25.4 overs

England are convinced Dimuth Karunaratne has under-edged the ball through to Jamie Smith, who went up straight away.

Joel Wilson is unmoved, but England ask for another look.

On paper, Sri Lanka's batting is their strength but it's their bowlers that have shown all the grit and the fight.

  15. SL 60-2published at 25 overs

Prabath Jayasuriya looks very much the No.9 as he goes for a rather bizarre duck/pull shot combo. He has largely been very solid though for a tailender.

Sri Lanka showing a bit of spirit so far this morning.

    Stephan Shemilt

Joe Root would have caught that if he wasn't wearing such ridiculous shades.

It was a tough chance, it went quickly.

As they say, if you're going to flash, flash hard!

  18. dropped catch

Karunaratne dropped on 25published at 23.5 overs

A tough chance, but a chance nonetheless.

Dimuth Karunaratne gets a thick edge on an attempted cut and the ball fizzes towards Joe Root at first slip, who can only parry the ball diving to his left and it runs away for four.

It would have been an absolute worldie if Root had held on.

    Sir Alastair Cook

I think Ollie Pope handled things very well last night with all the fuss around the light. He got the timing right in terms of how much spin was bowled, gave them a chance, but when it wasn't turning enough then it was the right thing to go off.

  20. SL 55-2published at 23 overs

    Target 483

Dimuth Karunaratne gets away with a rather wild swipe outside off stump.

Just the two runs scored so far. Very much a sleepy Sunday morning.
