The Guardian's Ali Martin on BBC Test Match Special: "We're also clashing with the Premier League starting at the moment. It's not a good look for Lord's, which also has the World Test Championship final next June.

"Two thirds of the UK's Sri Lankan population lives in London, so I'd be asking if enough has been done to reach out to them? They have got a proud record at Lord's.

"You have to be flexible with prices. If you can see a fourth day is coming, and you know that the ticket sales haven't been great, then you can be dynamic. You can refund some of the money for those who have already paid a full price.

"I think we're expecting something similar at The Oval, they're saying their day four numbers aren't good although that is on a Monday."

There’s only a fuss about the low attendance today because it’s a surprise: Lord’s is normally full. It’s by far the best ground in the UK. Has Lord’s actually sold out all today’s tickets but people have decided not to attend because they thought Sri Lanka would roll over?

  3. 'It's not a good look'published at 13:38 British Summer Time 1 September

The Daily Mail and Wisden editor Lawrence Booth, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "It's not a good look. I hate to make comparisons but I was here for The Hundred final a couple of weekends ago and it was completely full. It doesn't look good for Test cricket.

"I'm sure we'll come on to the prices, but this summer was always going to be a difficult sell for the ECB. We had the Ashes last summer and India next year, and without disrespecting West Indies and Sri Lanka, this does feel like the wafer-thin ham in the sandwich.

"Asking fans to keep shelling out is a challenge and the Bazball challenge is also interesting. People are probably not keen on risking their money on fourth and fifth day tickets because of that.

"It looks terrible. The cheapest ticket is £95 and that is a lot of money. Yes, under 16s are free, but they've still got to come with an adult."

There has been plenty of discussion today around the crowd, and the ticket prices that have undoubtedly played a part in deterring people from coming to Lord's for day four.

Over on BBC Test Match Special now, Jonathan Agnew is hosting a journalist panel with The Guardian's Ali Martin, BBC Sport's Stephan Shemilt, Lawrence Booth of the Daily Mail and Wisden and Rex Clementine of The Island newspaper in Sri Lanka.

They'll be discussing a variety of subjects including the crowd so we'll bring you some of their analysis here too.

England didn't allow Sri Lanka too many scoring opportunities in a tidy opening session.

Here are some rare boundaries, as Angelo Mathews went into the lunch break on 34 with Dinesh Chandimal, on 15, for company.

Just the two wickets for England this morning as Sri Lanka have got stuck in, albeit without much fluency.

Prabath Jayasuriya was sent in last night to navigate the bad light, and did his job for 41 balls before perishing to Chris Woakes, who bowled a cracking spell first up.

Dimuth Karunaratne then battled admirably, withstanding some very disciplined England bowling, before succumbing to the short ball for 55.

England are clearly miles ahead but it's been a competitive morning. England have bowled well and challenged the Sri Lanka batters, who have got stuck in.

More work to be done this afternoon but I still believe the end will come today.

    Good afternoon, everyone.

Poor Tom. He had a tough day yesterday as an unsuccessful Oasis fan and an Everton fan. Be nice to him when he comes back this afternoon.

Until then, you're stuck with me to guide you through the lunch break and the afternoon session, where England will look to keep chipping away at Sri Lanka's wickets column.

As the players prepare to tuck into the their Lord's feast it is time for me to take a break too.

Here to guide you through the afternoon session is Ffion Wynne.

Sri Lanka resisting. England chipping. The hosts still very much in control of this Test.

    SL 136-4

Hands on heads time for England as Dinesh Chandimal goes for a wild drive that somehow escapes the outside edge.

Three runs off the over means Sri Lanka reach 136-4 at lunch.

The tourists will be very pleased with their morning's work. A top order that has melted away in the last few innings has found some solidity.

England have some thinking to do.

Here is how Dimuth Karunaratne was dismissed a few moments ago after battling his way to 55.

  13. SL 133-4published at 49 overs

A bit of chaos and confusion as Sri Lanka hesitate over a single. Angelo Mathews makes it back into his crease but Shoaib Bashir's throw hits the stumps and squirts away into a gap, allowing Sri Lanka to run the single anyway.

There's something about Olly Stone's bouncers that are proving very uncomfortable for the Sri Lanka batters to face. He doesn't have the express pace of Mark Wood but he must be finding something out of the pitch that makes his bouncers so tough to play.

That was a fine delivery and well played by Chandimal. That was at his head but he weaved under it in time.

  16. SL 125-4published at 48.1 overs

    Good cricket all round.

Olly Stone bowls a well-directed bouncer but Dinesh Chandimal keeps his eye on the ball all the way and watches it whistle past his helmet.

Test cricket is expensive but Lords especially is ridiculously expensive. We had tickets for Day 4 at Lords in Jimmy’s final Test… Once we got over that disappointment, we used the money to buy Day 4 tickets at Trent Bridge instead & used the rest to pay for all of our drinks that day!

The first Test against West Indies at Lord's this year ended on day three.

  18. SL 125-4published at 48 overs

I was close to calling for golden arm Joe Root to have a twirl before lunch but Ollie Pope brings back Matthew Potts.

It is an up and down over from Dinesh Chandimal, who pushes the ball off the back foot through the covers for a lovely four, before nearly chopping on a Potts delivery that jagged back in off the surface.

It feels like an impossible task for Sri Lanka, a case of 'when' rather than 'if'.

They will need at least two players to play the innings of their lives. But it is an opportunity for time in the middle, maybe get yourself on the honours board, with so much time left in the game.

  20. SL 120-4published at 47 overs

New batter Dinesh Chandimal gets a bit lucky first ball. He ducks out of a short delivery but leaves his bat dangling like a periscope and the ball finds a thick edge that lands safely.

England have their tails up. This could be a tricky 10 minutes or so before lunch for Sri Lanka.
