We've had so many dot balls today. So many play and misses.

    Need 17 runs to win

David Miller times one nicely, clipping off his legs, but because of the sandy outfield it just goes nowhere and they only manage a single.

And then Pathirana ends his over with another cracking yorker, but again it's just kept out.

South Africa have actually reined in their attacking instincts, and read the conditions well with better rotation of strike than Sri Lanka did.

But it's still been so bowler-friendly.

    Need 20 runs to win

Another of South Africa's destructive middle order batters comes to the middle in David Miller.

They're one of the most terrifying batting line-ups to bowl at normally, but the conditions really haven't suited their style today.

He's just tried to get things going there, he cleared the front leg but picks out short cover. The fielder is there for that shot.

A very un-Tristan Stubbs innings but then it's been a very un-South Africa innings as a whole.

There goes another one. The pressure is starting to tell a bit for South Africa.

    Stubbs c Asalanka b Hasaranga 13 (SA 58-4)

Great catch! Is there a twist?!

Again, a batter is caught out after trying to put their hands through it. Although in fairness, Tristan Stubbs gets hold of a drive but Charith Asalanka takes a smart catch at cover with the ball barely off the ground.

Stubbs goes for a gritty 13 from 28 balls.

  8. SA 57-3published at 12 overs

    Target 78

I'm looking forward to hearing the batters' thoughts at the end of this game.

Pathirana ends his over with a bouncer, but it's too wide and Stubbs can easily leave it alone.

Klaasen has managed to play that to deep square while lying on his face.

  11. SA 57-3published at 11.4 overs

Oh, hello! Pathirana is such a thrill to watch.

He slings a perfect, sharp yorker straight into Klaasen's toes and leaves him lying in a heap on the ground.

No mercy from Tristan Stubbs, though, who calls him to get to his feet and run the single! Klaasen did very well to just survive it.

  12. SA 51-3published at 11 overs

    Target 78

Heinrich Klaasen is off the mark first ball with a single.

He and Stubbs are two of the world's in-form T20 players, two exciting and powerful batters, but they'll just be expected to nudge and nurdle their way to this modest total sensibly.

Quinton de Kock is furious. He tried to play it down the ground and was too early on it.

A very simple caught and bowled and De Kock turned around and punched his bat.

You can understand his frustration, he'd done the hard work.

Hasaranga strikes! He is absolutely pumped up. He launched the ball skyward as soon as he took the catch.

    De Kock c & b Hasaranga 20 (SA 51-3)

And he strikes in his first over! A soft dismissal from Quinton de Kock's point of view.

He battled hard for 20 from 27 balls and is furious with himself here, slamming his bat with his fist. He comes forward in defence and simply prods it straight back to the bowler, who was never dropping that.

    Here's the captain Wanindu Hasaranga.

Earlier, he tried to take responsibility with the bat by promoting himself up the order, but it didn't quite go to plan.

  17. Postpublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 3 June 2024

There haven't been many fireworks from South Africa, but this one would have pleased Quinton de Kock, who hasn't been at his free-flowing best so far.

We've had the official attendance figures for this opening match in New York. The ground holds 32,000 but there are 12,562 people here.

This is a match for the purists and where better to play it than in Long Island?

  20. SA 47-2published at 10 overs

    Target 78

Cracking over, a wide in it the only blemish.

With more runs to defend, these Sri Lanka seamers would be a right handful.

Halfway through the overs and South Africa are just plodding their way to the total.
