    Hendricks c Shanaka b Thushara 4 (SA 10-1)

    Lovely response!

Thushara overcomes the early jitters with that no-ball and fights back with a beauty, a good length just getting some extra bounce at 83mph and taking the splice of Reeza Hendricks' bat.

Sri Lanka's celebrations aren't particularly jubilant because they are so far behind the game but that's a delightful piece of bowling.

  2. SA 9-0published at 1.1 overs

Nuwan Thushara, with his Malinga-like slingy action, starts horribly with a wide full toss that the umpires eventually decide is a no-ball.

The free hit delivery is a good one, though, full and on the stumps but Quinton de Kock manages to get it away for a couple.

South Africa will know they can afford a few dot balls and not get flustered.

  5. SA 6-0published at 1 over

    Target 78

Mathews starts well with four dots before a wide gifts South Africa their first run.

Quinton de Kock then gets off the mark with a single, before Reeza Hendricks guides the last ball of the over past point for four.

A solid start to the chase.

Clearly the onus is on Sri Lanka now. They've got to find, I dare say, 10 rabbits.

They need something miraculous but it feels more a question of how long South Africa take to knock off these runs because they're just an awesome batting line-up.

  7. SA 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Dot ball. We saw plenty of those in the first innings - Ottniel Baartman on World Cup debut bowled 20 in his four-over spell!

Angelo Mathews will take the first over.

Sri Lanka's most experienced player is going to try and lead from the front, as he tried to do with the bat - but the damage had already been done by the time he got out there.

South Africa openers Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks are making their way to the middle.

Something tells me this won't take very long.

    Cheers, Sam.

    Well, that was fun, right?

Total dominance from South Africa, total shambles for Sri Lanka.

It's certainly been an eventful first World Cup innings in New York but those who have made their way to Long Island to watch may have a bit more of their afternoons to themselves than they expected.

To take you through what could be a rather short South Africa chase, it's over to Ffion Wynne.

  12. "It's a dream come true for me"published at 17:06 British Summer Time 3 June

South Africa bowler Ottniel Baartman: "Our openers set us up perfectly with their start. You don't get days like that often in T20 cricket.

"Anrich Nortje is a world-class player and athlete. We couldn't ask for anything more from him today. He can win us matches from any situation.

"I am very proud of all of us. Aiden leads us exceptionally, we knew the pitch would help us out as seam bowlers but it couldn't have gone much better than that.

"There is movement out there but I am backing our batters to get through it and get us victory. Being here is a dream come true for me, to play in a World Cup for my country. I am so proud to be here."

  13. South Africa need 78 to winpublished at 17:05 British Summer Time 3 June

A near-perfect start to this T20 World Cup for South Africa as their bowlers tore through Sri Lanka.

They need just 78 to win. Sri Lanka need a minor miracle.

South Africa's bowlers were just magnificent, from the very beginning.

  15. wicket

Thushara run out (Nortje) 0 (SL 77 all)

Sri Lanka's lowest total in T20 cricket.

Nuwan Thushara comes back for a second run that was never on in an attempt to get Maheesh Theekshana back on strike.

Anrich Nortje's throw is a good one and Marco Jansen breaks the stumps to end the innings.

    Super stuff from South Africa.

He's bowled 20 dot balls out of 24!

  17. SL 76-9published at 19 overs

Confidently stroked down the ground for a single by Maheesh Theekshana to end the over.

Ottneil Baartman ends with figures of 1-9 from his four overs. Not a bad T20 World Cup debut.

It's been such an entertaining game for all the wrong reasons but this is why we love cricket so much!

  19. SL 75-9published at 18.4 overs

Maheesh Theekshana ruins Ottneil Baartman's figures by heaving the ball through the leg side for four!

That's why he turned down that single...

I did always used to get so annoyed at my team-mates if I ever had to get my pads on in a T20.
