It was full and that absolutely flies through at about shoulder height.

Oh wow. It's thrilling to watch, just without the runs.

  2. SA 43-2published at 9.3 overs

Here's Matheesha Pathirana, the second of Sri Lanka's slingy seamers.

He starts beautifully, with a couple of rippers that bounce sharply and have Quinton de Kock playing and missing.

  3. SA 42-2published at 9 overs

    Target 78

    Just three from the over.

It's certainly not been the blockbuster opener that I would imagine New York was hoping for.

South Africa should win with ease but it is not a case of "let's win in 10 overs" now.

  5. SA 39-2published at 8.3 overs

Three dots from Dasun Shanaka to Tristan Stubbs, who has five from 18 balls.

    Patience...

Quinton de Kock has just had to wait, wait, wait for the ball and then hit it.

That's gone a long, long way back. The one thing you don't want to bowl here is a long hop that just sits up.

  8. 6 runs

    SA 39-2published at 8 overs

    Target 78

The pitch may be tricky but if it's that short, it's begging to be hit for six on any surface.

Quinton de Kock finally gets some good timing, pulling it firmly over square leg and into the stands.

Funny old game. If South Africa were batting first and it was 33-2, you'd say how well Sri Lanka were bowling.

As it is, given the way they batted, it is probably too little too late.

I'm still putting that down as a drop. You've got to get forward to that.

  11. SA 31-2published at 7.1 overs

Almost! Angelo Mathews draws an edge from Tristan Stubbs, who is all over the place, but it just bounces short in front of keeper Kusal Mendis and they scamper a single.

You would expect this movement on a heavy, overcast England morning at Old Trafford or somewhere. But we've got bright sunshine.

We've seen hardly any crisp shots or solid connections. Every batter has struggled.

  14. SA 30-2published at 7 overs

    Target 78

My word, seven overs in and it's still doing all sorts.

Dasun Shanaka gets one to jag sharply between Tristan Stubbs' bat and pad, just skimming over middle and off stump.

Chasing 78 has never looked so tricky!

If you are any of the other teams playing here, you are wondering what you're going to do.

Anything full is not carrying, anything further back is flying through. It is the definition of a two-paced pitch.

  17. SA 27-2published at 6 overs

    Target 78

Sri Lanka batted poorly, without a doubt, but South Africa's innings here shows that the pitch and conditions certainly played a part.

Some are staying low, the sandy outfield makes finding the boundary difficult and there is movement off the surface as well.

Up against it, Sri Lanka have bowled admirably.

Aiden Markram wasn't out there for that long, but at least he had time to treat us to this stunner.

That catch really should have been taken. Kusal Mendis moved just a little bit late and Stubbs gets a life.

This is not easy for South Africa and they're being made to work for those runs.
