'He gave it a tonk' - Pant hits Carse for four over mid-wicket

Just before the close, Brydon Carse gets his first over of the session.

Gill uses the hard new ball to ease a shot to the third boundary, before Pant heaves one over mid-wicket to bring up India's 350 - that was very close to a six.

Carse's final delivery then clips Pant's back leg, and it's put down by a diving Harry Brook at second slip.

So our 3 opening bowlers have conceded over 200 runs for 1 wicket. Inept and a disgrace.

Yorkie, sitting in my lounge with air con

Just got off a flight home from Switzerland and pleased to see the England Test summer tradition of making judgements based on the first day of the first Test and thinking everything is about England rather than the opposition is in full effect.

Ben Stokes has stood out today for England. He has been the most consistent and challenged the batters the most. He's swung it both ways, which meant batters couldn't get after him.

  4. Ind 337-3published at 81 overs

Chris Woakes' final delivery is a no-ball so he'll have to bowl it again.

Here it is and Pant again goes unconventional, trying to clip it over fine leg while falling towards the off side deliberately to get out of the way of the ball.

He doesn't connect, but it would have been quite the shot if he had.

An unbelievable shot from Rishabh Pant. He tried to slog it over midwicket but it goes through long-on and a chip of the wood has come from the bottom of the bat!

What an extraordinary shot to make your half century.

    New ball, what new ball?

Rishabh Pant simultaneously brings up his half-century from 91 balls and passes 3000 Test runs with a very strange shot.

He attempts a slog sweep to Woakes, but manages to toe-end the ball, seeing it race down the ground, beat a diving fielder and reach the ropes.

India have dominated the day, they've got to be delighted. Even if England get a couple of wickets, India will think it is an excellent day.

This is where you show your heart as a bowler, it's a chance for Woakes and Carse to show what they are all about.

  8. new ball

    New ballpublished at 80 overs

    Ind 331-3

One single from Bashir's 21st over - the England spinner has toiled without break during this session.

That's the end of the old ball - the home side will take the new cherry at the first opportunity and Chris Woakes will take it with about 20 minutes before the close.

The key to getting big scores in Test cricket is individual scores but big partnerships. It sends a confidence through the changing room that the pitch is good and there are runs out there to get.

The negativity from England fans is getting boring. Calling it embarrassing before we’ve even batted is just plain silly

I am already tired of the relentless negativity of England fans. This is Day 1 of a 5 Test series against one of the best sides in the world, not a T20 game!

    Graham, Birmingham

How quickly England fans resort to hysteria! Gill would have bowled too, seamers will return to fitness, and the world will continue to turn! This team is more than the sum of its parts, surely the mark of any decent side

The second new ball will be a big chance. If England can get two more wickets here, it sets them up nicely for tomorrow.

The pitch hasn't done loads today. You would hope that there are still runs to be had on here when England get the chance to bat on it.

Ouch, Josh Tongue lands a delivery on Shubman Gill's hip.

No matter, the India captain has his revenge from the following delivery, firing through the covers and the ball races away for four.

This bowling line-up can't hit a barnyard door.

Three words after being subjected to this England bowling performance all day. Jofra. Archer. Please.

    Dan, Midlands

This has to be the worst bowling performance for England for a long time. Can’t believe they pushed Jimmy out for this.

I like what India are doing here. They are looking to dominate and score and this is probably the easiest time to score.

England will be tired, so utilise these last few overs of the day. It looks like India are going to do just that.

  16. Ind 322-3published at 77 overs

Four singles off Tongue's over, with more familiar Pant stylings - he attempts a big waft down the ground and then can't connect, then backs away to gently pull a single.

Meanwhile the hundred partnership has come up.

The India batters are used to batting on flat wickets, when there is not much in the surface. It is almost irrelevant what it's like because they always get something out of it.

You can only really judge it once both teams have played on it.

Surely there’s no doubt today is a result of the failure to drop Pope for Bethell at three?

Oh, for a left arm bowler to provide variety. Another advantage of picking Bethell

This is all self inflicted. Anywhere else in the world, England would have picked to bat the pants off this pitch. Looked at stats not conditions. Happened in the World Cup too.

    Josh, Norwich

At what point does this become embarrassing? The decision at the toss was a disaster, but in all fairness, England would have underwhelmed with the bat just long enough to delay the inevitable bowling pain. Do we really have to play the Ashes?!
