  1. NZ 67-3published at 19 overs

Two quick wickets but Kane Williamson is still going calmly about his business for New Zealand.

You wouldn't expect anything else, would you?

He takes three from Ben Stokes' over before Daryl Mitchell plays out four dot balls.

We're into the extra half hour now. Can England snatch a fourth wicket before stumps to really put themselves on top?

  2. NZ 64-3published at 18 overs

    Wicket maiden from Chris Woakes.

That's how you make your return to the attack.

More bounce for him to end the over as well as new batter Daryl Mitchell lets it go in the channel outside off.

Change of bowling for England - and it works!

Brilliant catch from Brydon Carse after an inside edge from Rachin Ravindra balloons up off the thigh pad.

A bit of extra bounce from Chris Woakes helped get that edge and Carse did so well to sprint in from mid-wicket then dive to make the grab millimetres from the turf.

  4. NZ 64-2published at 17 overs

    Tidy over from Ben Stokes.

After Rachin Ravindra flicks for a single first ball, the England skipper probes away around Kane Williamson's off stump.

No chinks in Williamson's armour it seems and he is happy to let a couple of bouncers go by, too.

  5. NZ 63-2published at 16 overs

    Effortless from Kane Williamson.

Too full from Brydon Carse and Williamson times the drive perfectly, through mid-off for four.

Every run the Black Caps number three gets from here will hurt Carse.

As we all know, there are two kinds of leave...

So this has to go down as a good one from Rachin Ravindra - but that was mightily close to off stump!

The left-hander shoulders arms but Ben Stokes gets the ball to nip back and he can't believe that has missed.

Hands on heads from the England bowler and fielders. So close to hitting off.

    Tom Latham chops on!

No issues with the front foot this time as Ben Stokes strikes.

Back of a length from round the wicket, Latham tries to punch it through the covers but gets an inside edge onto his stumps.

Nowhere near as good as Carse delivery to Williamson except for the fact that this one is actually out!

Brydon Carse was very impressive in Pakistan too. He has got stamina, energy, bowls a heavy ball and at a good pace on a good length.

Batsmen don't like to get forward to Carse so when he bowls that fullish length it teases the outside edge. He won me over in Pakistan - I was not convinced about him before that but I am now.

  9. NZ 53-1published at 14 overs

Having got a life on 20, Kane Williamson is back in his bubble to defend a couple from Brydon Carse before clipping a single to leg.

The delivery that bowled Williamson gets better with every viewing. The former New Zealand skipper was squared up as the ball went on to crash into off stump.

Sadly, Carse had nothing behind the line so it mattered not.

    Time for drinks.

    Oh no.

Brydon Carse bowls Kane Williamson with an absolute beauty... but he's called for a no-ball.

Off stump pegged back and Williamson was on his way. However, the tightest of no-ball calls goes against Carse, nothing behind the line from the England fast bowler.

In the first 10 overs, England bowlers targeted the stumps 13% of the time while the Kiwis bowled just 5% of the balls at the stumps.

However, New Zealand bowlers hit the good line and lengths (58%) compared to England (48%).

    Thanks, Mike.

After losing Devon Conway early, this has been a decent start from New Zealand.

Kane Williamson looks in good touch again and works Ben Stokes through the leg side for three to bring up the Black Caps' fifty.

  13. NZ 46-1published at 12 overs

Hey, tasty follow-up delivery from Carse, which Williamson fends just short of gully.

Right, time for me to hand over the tiller of this live text - here's Sam Drury to take you to the close.

    And they don't.

A difficult one to call for third umpire Ahsan Raza.

  15. Postpublished at 04:23 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2024

    Well now.

This looks difficult - we've got an initial spike on snicko as Williamson hits his pad with his bat, but then a second one as the ball passes the edge - but the bat was likely still sliding along the side of the pad.

I don't think they can give this.

    Up go the England fielders!

They think they have Williamson caught behind off the bowling of Carse, but receive nothing from the umpire.

Ben Stokes thinks about it and decides to send it upstairs.

Changes at both ends as Stokes replaces Woakes.

It's a decent first over, folks, just a couple of singles for the two Kiwi blokes.

A first change for England as Brydon Carse replaces Gus Atkinson.

Latham clips his first delivery through mid-wicket - Shoaib Bashir gives chase and seems to just about turn the ball away from the rope (an actual rope too, none of yer modern boundary sponge) with his finger, a fact that's ascertained after numerous replays.

The New Zealand captain has to settle for three there, but Williamson gets four a few balls later with a beautifully timed drive past mid-off.

  20. NZ 33-1published at 9 overs

Latham takes three from Woakes' first ball with a firm shot past mid-off.

The rest are dot balls - just a description of the over, not another podcast from the Lineker stable.
