Summary

  1. Umpire reviewpublished at 76.5 overs

Sorry, Jamie Smith. We'll come back to celebrating you shortly.

Looks like Gus Atkinson has been caught down the leg side. The umpires are just checking whether it's carried to the keeper.

Jamie Smith has brought up his first Test hundred. You feel the first of quite a few. He's batted so nicely and been in complete control, with an element of ruthlessness about it.

  3. 100 runs

    There it is!

He's taken his time, batted patiently through the 90s but still managed to look so composed and confident in himself.

He's faced 136 balls, struck seven fours and a six and my word, does he look like he belongs in Test cricket?

It's been a good morning for England. Sri Lanka are feeling the pressure. Smith and Atkinson's partnership is 60. Atkinson is doing a wonderful job. The longer they stay out there the more Sri Lanka will feel the frustration and pressure.

  5. Eng 302-6published at 76.2 overs

Gus Atkinson clips into the leg side for three, bringing up England's 300 and getting Smith back on strike.

Angelo Mathews looks surprisingly stiff and slow in the field, for a man who hasn't bowled and got a duck in the first innings.

Edged... but past slip for three.

Jamie Smith is on strike for the final ball of the over, but he blocks it.

  8. Eng 296-6published at 75.2 overs

Bit of aggression from Smith, driving one down the ground off the spinner but straight to long-on.

    98...

Smith is one more realistic hit away from 100.

The slow outfield continues to tease Jamie Smith.

He connects nicely with one from Milan Rathnayake, clipping off his pads but it plugs and is restricted to two.

    He moves to 97...

For those eagerly awaiting Smith's century, he's in no rush.

Another over ticks by with just a single from it.

Very demure, very mindful batting from this pair at the moment.

Steve: I think Jamie Smith has a spirit level built into his bat. Beautifully straight bat. He makes batting look simple. Class act.

Smith moves to 95, matching his highest Test score which he made against West Indies earlier this summer.

The partnership between him and Atkinson passes 50. They've done it very easily.

The cross breeze will allow the ball to get a good drift. If you start it out at first slip with the body rotation and pivot it should come arching back in nicely.

Gus Atkinson just gets his bat in front of him in time to avoid being plumb lbw, and then gets a leading edge that almost pops back up to the bowler.

Jayasuriya is the only bowler causing a few problems at the moment.

It's looks like Sri Lanka need a break through this morning. With the tricky conditions and flat pitch, they just don't seem to have that cutting edge.

There are just some situations where being anti-social on your phone is acceptable, Harry.

They're usually to do with sport, in my case. And this is one of them - Smith has 93.

Harry and the ghost of Caecelius: I'm currently walking around the ruins of Pompeii eagerly refreshing the BBC Sport app to see if Smith gets his hundred... I don't think the group I'm with are too pleased with me staring at my phone!

Sri Lanka have stemmed the flow of runs pretty well but it's hard to see where the wicket is coming from here.

It just feels like they are going through the motions and expecting a magic ball from nowhere to help them out.

It's definitely batting weather. Atkinson is looking good and planting himself on that front foot. You can't rush him on anything.
