An optimistic attempt from Sri Lanka to get the ball changed is quickly dismissed by the umpires.

    Maybe try switching the bails?

Sri Lanka can still get through England here, but it's starting to look a bit ominous.

  3. Eng 284-6published at 68 overs

    Lead by 48

Leg slip and short leg are now in place for Gus Atkinson against the spinner, which is pleasing to finally see Sri Lanka being proactive and bowling to some kind of plan.

Just one single from the over to Smith, who moves to 90...

Rachel T, Lincoln: Right lads, no pressure, but my wonderfully cricket-mad Mum is coming over this afternoon SPECIFICALLY to watch the Test. Hoping for a GLUT of cover drives.

What better way to start a Friday morning than by watching Jamie Smith's straight drive?

    Enjoy.

It's difficult for the fast bowlers on windy days with the cross breeze. Gusty winds favour the batsmen over the bowlers most of the time.

And now we're back to the spinner.

It's been a bizarre start. Do Sri Lanka realise that, with four quick wickets this morning, they are properly in the game? It doesn't feel like that. It just feels like Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson are having a net.

If Atkinson keeps getting off strike easily and the partnership gets some momentum, then Sri Lanka could be in trouble.

Not sure what Sri Lanka's plan is this morning. They've got deep cover out for Gus Atkinson, who takes an easy single and gets Jamie Smith back on strike with absolutely no pressure.

Atkinson then gets some width that he gratefully slashes for four. England are off to a flyer and that's the last thing Sri Lanka need.

However, they don't look that bothered. The body language is very flat, the noise levels at a minimum.

A great shot and a handsome off-drive from Jamie Smith. He hit that ball so crisp.

Four more, threaded through the covers.

Smith is already into his groove and that's ominous for Sri Lanka. They want the new ball to come as soon as possible (it's still 16 overs away).

Asitha Fernando runs hard and he likes to nip the ball back into the right hander. That was slightly over pitched, but Smith leapt onto it beautifully.

    Oh, beautiful.

Asitha Fernando does come on to bowl but he's greeted by a straight drive down the ground from Jamie Smith.

    He moves to 80.

Smith decided it was full enough and he just whipped it out. He made it look so easy.

More lovely timing from Smith, clipping Vishwa Fernando through mid-wicket, but the outfield is still slow so it's restricted to two.

Interesting move from Sri Lanka to open with Vishwa instead of his namesake Asitha, who was the pick of the bowlers yesterday.

Atkinson can bat, but he's never got going so far in the Test arena. We always talk about Jamie Smith but there is a role to be played at the other end if England are to be in with a chance.

  18. Eng 260-6published at 62 overs

That single is the only run from a tidy Jayasuriya over.

He'll be hopeful for more deliveries like this one...

The outfield is unblemished and looks really good despite the rain. The crowd are here and the sun is shining what more do you want? Well, I guess we could do without that wind!

Smith clips to long-on to start proceedings. He takes the single, trusting Gus Atkinson.
