Angelo Mathews keeps improving, keeps working on his game and getting fitter. Yes, he's 37 so he has definitely slowed down and he's had his injury troubles.

But as a batter, his runs are so valuable and his experience counts for so much in this team. He's got his own batting style, it's not exactly what you'd be teaching kids learning the game but it works for him, and he knows his game and what works for him.

He knows how to build an innings, and put the pressure on the bowlers. He's a class player.

Sri Lanka were reduced to 1-2, while they suffered another blow when Dinesh Chandimal had to exit the field with a hand injury.

  6. 'A special feeling'published at 19:28 British Summer Time 23 August

England batter Jamie Smith to Test Match Special: "It's a special feeling. When you've missed out, last time for me at Edgbaston, there's always the little niggling thought about what could've been but it's a great day.

"Whenever there's a stat that says something's important, like a century, it's always on people's minds, so it's good to get over the line.

"There's not loads in the wicket, I think it's going to be quite attritional, but we're very happy with six wickets and they're not too far ahead. I think we're in a good position.

"That's cricket, isn't it [dropped catches]. It's never easy, nobody ever means to make mistakes like that. It's more for the bowlers, they're creating chances and making things happen so that's the most important thing. We've had three tough days of Test cricket and we want another good day tomorrow.

"I didn't actually know the law [of gloves in front of the stumps], I thought it was just if you broke the stumps. But clearly it's different to that. At least I know not to do it moving forward!

"I don't know the issue with Woody, but fingers crossed he's good for tomorrow."

  7. 'Sri Lanka have hung in there'published at 19:21 British Summer Time 23 August

Ex-Sri Lanka all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

It's been another tough day for Sri Lanka but they have hung in there. They have a lead, and one big partnership now from Mendis and Chandimal is needed desperately.

But going back to the start of the day, they weren't on it and the execution wasn't there, they never manged to build any pressure on the batters. And then losing those two wickets before lunch, it's the worst possible start.

Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis batted well and I have been very impressed with the fight. They have never been ahead of the game and we did expect that against a quality England team in their own conditions.

But, they are battling away. Who knows? If Mendis and Chandimal add 100 together, we'll be looking at things very differently.

The good news is that Chandimal looks positive and not in too much discomfort after that blow to the thumb.

Smith eventually fell for 111, and his replacement Mark Wood hit a lusty 13-ball 22.

Matty Potts was the last England player to be dismissed, as the home side finished on 358, a lead of 122.

With the ball in hand, England just did what they always do. When Chris Woakes gets the Dukes ball in his hand with helpful conditions, he's as good as anyone in the world.

Mark Wood hobbling off is a concern, he looks like he's got a groin niggle.

But it was a very professional performance, dropped catches aside. Those chances should've been taken. I put my spectacles and think of playing against the better teams, and that can't happen.

    A fine player indeed, Michael.

Resuming from 72 overnight, the England keeper reached his hundred from 136 deliveries in the morning session.

  11. 'Smith is a fine player'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 23 August

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

It's been a very good day for England, starting with Jamie Smith getting his maiden Test century.

He is a fine player. He got close against West Indies at Edgbaston but England really have picked an outstanding player. Yes, Sri Lanka's bowling attack isn't exactly in the Premier League of Test attacks and he'll have bigger challenges to come, with tours away from home and the likes of India and Australia.

But first and foremost, I always look at a batter and think, can you defend? Can you get forward and play straight and survive the best balls that a bowler is going to bowl at you? And he's got that, he's got a brilliant solid defence, he uses his feet nicely and then he's got the ability to go through the gears and attack.

Prabath Jayasuriya bowled well to him but he played the spinner well too, granted it's not the turn you'll get in the subcontinent but there were good signs.

He was under pressure at Edgbaston, he was under a little pressure this morning but he just looked very calm the whole way through.

The only question to come is whether Smith is batting too low but England have such a powerhouse line-up and they want someone at seven who can bat with the tail and he's certainly got the skillset for that.

Sri Lanka finish the evening session on 204-6, a lead of 82 and we go into a fourth day.

Kamindu Mendis is unbeaten on 56, while Dinesh Chandimal is alongside him on 20 having returned from a period off the field.

It has been a gutsy performance especially when you consider that Sri Lanka had another nightmarish start.

England are still in a good position but they haven't been flawless, those dropped catches spring to mind.

Chandimal takes the bait but it's a fine shot to end the day.

Sri Lanka fought back well from being 1-2 but England are still on top.

    SL 204-6

Funky field to end the day off, leg slip, short leg, silly mid-on and a short mid-wicket.

Whatever the trap is, Dinesh Chandimal doesn't seem to care.

He clouts Bashir's final ball for four over that silly mid-on, finishing the day with a flourish.

  16. SL 200-6published at 59.2 overs

    Last over then.

Chandimal knocks Bashir's second ball into the covers and hurries back from two - that's Sri Lanka's two hundred up.

One for the stats (for Anon re- yorkers). Last yorker bowled by an English bowler in August at Old Trafford was Darren Gough. Bloke down the pub just said.
