Chandimal looks like he's in a lot of discomfort here.

  2. SL 74-3published at 17.2 overs

Wood raps Chandimal on the gloves, a rising delivery hitting the fingers of the back hand.

It causes him to drop his bat, then call on the physios.

Here's that rather curious Karunaratne wicket.

A little inside edge was enough to do the damage.

I've been glad to see Sri Lanka being positive and not just grinding this out.

  6. SL 74-3published at 17 overs

    Sri Lanka trail by 48

Another short cameo from Bashir, just two overs and now Woakes is back.

The Sri Lankan batters exchange a couple of singles at the start of the over.

    Time for drinks.

  7. SL 72-3published at 16 overs

Fearsome delivery from Wood, into the mid-90s. It's well handled by Mathews, who gets the delivery away into the covers for three.

Little stat for you - Sri Lanka have scored a three in five of the last six overs.

    Look out, Zaltzman.

Stevo, Cheltenham: I’m glad my comment made them change their approach.I’m also available for weddings and Bar Mitzvahs.

  9. Thank you, sir!published at 15:02 British Summer Time 23 August

Mark Wood shook Harry Brook's hand after he took the catch that dismissed Dimuth Karunaratne, all very formal.

They then rubbed foreheads, bit less conventional.

That's what Angelo Mathews can do.

He knows that they need to be proactive, to throw a few punches back at England. He won't be prepared to just "sit in".

Angelo Mathews handily demonstrates his prowess against spin, crashing Bashir's second delivery over long off for six!

    Big hit, that.

Angelo Mathews has a decent record in England and averages 45 in 11 innings but, interestingly, has never been dismissed by spin on these shores.

Gary, Brixton: I think the phrase is ‘This didn’t age well’ for Stevo 14.49.

  15. SL 57-3published at 14 overs

Wood greets Dinesh Chandimal with a sharp bouncer - the new batter just about manages to limbo under it.

He fares better from the following delivery, pulling the ball away for three.

He must've known he'd hit it, so I'm not sure what the conversation would've been about.

Karunaratne got himself into a right tangle there but England will be delighted with his wicket because he is one of the Sri Lanka players with a very good technique, who can hang around and frustrate you.

Just extraordinary, a very unusual dismissal, but Mark Wood makes an instant impact!

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 13.1 overs

    Karunaratne c Brook b Wood 27 (SL 52-3)

Double change as Mark Wood comes on... and the switch works straight away!

Karunaratne is hurried by the England seamer, trying to turn the first delivery square. It seems to take an inside edge, clip his body and then absolutely fly to Harry Brook at second slip.

Karunaratne looks to Mathews, who offers him no solace and that's end of a promising partnership for Sri Lanka.

Stevo, Cheltenham: Although still in a strong position, it looks at the moment that England don’t seem to have a plan. Bowlers pitching it all over the place and fielding positions not creating pressure.

We're watching Bashir learn and develop as a spinner in front of our eyes. You can see the difference and the confidence in him now.
