Rob, Ely: After the five or six grim years before, the past three years have, with the glaring exception of the India tour, been unbelievably positive. Consistently positive, entertaining, and a joy to watch. By contrast, the delight in being negative shown by some of the England fanbase is beyond wearying.

It's a fine shot with good use of the feet! De Silva just comes down the pitch and turns the ball into a slot delivery. That will encourage England and Bashir.

  3. How's stat?!published at 15:45 British Summer Time 23 August

Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva was excellent in the first innings for his 74 off 84 balls.

Looking at his career record in Tests, England might have been advised to keep Mark Wood on to bowl to him. De Silva averages 51 against medium pace up to 87mph. Anything faster and that average is almost halved to 26.

    Ah, hello Dhananjaya de Silva!

He dances down the track to Shoaib Bashir and dispatches him for four down the ground.

Ruan, London: Re Nick in York, Going to ask the question everyone is thinking, how does one break their leg watching a cricket match?

  6. SL 84-3published at 22 overs

First sight of Matthew Potts today, as he comes on to replace Mark Wood.

For the third over in a row, just a single from Angelo Mathews.

Tom, London: I love it when fans say things like: ‘there’s no plan’ about elite level, international sport! Of course there is a plan and additional plans and all will have been worked out meticulously and to the letter… it’s just that the other elite international team also have a plan so it doesn’t always go to plan! But it’s pretty ridiculous to think that any team at the professional level is ever sent out without a plan!

Bashir is building up to have momentum. His run up starts slow and then gets quicker so he has that snap at the crease.

  9. SL 83-3published at 21 overs

Back comes Bashir for Woakes, just a single for Mathews from this over.

Incidentally, don't expect tea any time soon - the revised conditions for today will see the afternoon session extend to 16:15 BST.

Dan: Is it just the English way or are people honestly this miserable and negative? We are dominating here, again, but people always look to find fault. Its utterly depressing reading so much negativity ALL THE TIME!

Mathews is playing deep in his crease. He's not coming forward to Wood and he's going back as far as he can to give himself as much time as possible.

Nick, York: I broke my leg at Old Trafford six years ago at the England v India T20. Was made to get an Uber to the hospital by the paramedics on scene. Wonder if Chandimal will be made to get one?

  15. SL 81-3published at 19 overs

Angelo Mathews picks up three off Woakes, seeing Shoaib Bashir retrieve the ball from mid-on.

De Silva then beats the diving Ollie Pope in the covers to take two.

Liam, Leeds: Steve, 14.49, is bang on. There is no plan, certainly no plan B anyway. This has consistently been demonstrated by the fact we concede so my tail end partnerships and bowl too short to the lower order.

Looks like Chandimal's innings is done, he walks off holding his right hand delicately out in front of him.

He retires on 10, and in comes captain Dhananjaya de Silva, who top-scored in the first innings with 74.
