If you're Steve Smith, you're pleased with the wicket but you've still got work to do. He's got a decision to make. Does he keep Adam Zampa going, he's got two overs left, in which case Australia could be exposed in the last 10 overs. Or does he save him for the last 10.

  2. Eng 228-4published at 36 overs

This is a good spell for Australia as England take only four singles from Ben Dwarshuis' over.

Ben Duckett and Jos Buttler are sensibly looking to regroup for a couple of overs after the loss of those two quick wickets.

Adam Zampa will continue into his ninth over.

In ODIs, Alex Carey has never taken more than four catches while wicketkeeping. He has three as a fielder today.

He has had three catches in the field for Australia before, though. Carey took a trio in a T20 against Bangladesh in August 2021 when Matthew Wade had the gloves.

This is a crucial period of the game. If England lose another wicket it puts Australia in a really good position.

Adam Zampa has bowled relatively economically considering the conditions.

  6. Eng 224-4published at 35 overs

Captain Jos Buttler is in at six with things suddenly looking a tad more precarious for England.

Adam Zampa has been superb but the leg-spinner only has two more overs to bowl. Does Steve Smith stick with him or hold an over or two back?

Given the situation and with Buttler new to the crease, he must be tempted to keep him going and try to nab another wicket.

Harry Brook went for the big shot fairly early. Steve Smith would've had to make some changes, he decided to stick with Adam Zampa, which was the bolder option, on the basis that Harry Brook is not on form.

Anyone who's in good form wouldn't go for the big shot that early.

There'll be more talk about Harry Brook with spin bowling after that. Alex Carey is absolutely excelling on that field.

Another very good catch from Alex Carey.

Harry Brook's poor form continues as he advances to Adam Zampa, tries to hit over the top but slices the ball into the off side.

For a moment it looks like he might get away with it as the ball spins and loops towards a gap between the fielders but Carey has other ideas, running from backward point and then throwing himself to his left to take it.

Just to take responsibility: no sooner had I sent a message to a group of cricket friends saying 'this is a Joe Root masterclass', and.... Apologies.

    John in Sheffield

Yet again. The damned sweep shot results in a wicket. Root doesn't play it all innings and then... Keep it simple and drop the sweep, boys.

    Phil

Sorry about that, just tuned in and the second ball I hear Root gets out. My bad I'll go back to cleaning.

Nathan Ellis has bowled very well for Australia so far.

He's conceded just 32 from his seven overs so far - with only three singles from his latest - and is the only bowler going at less than five-an-over to this point.

England now have the platform for some dangerous hitters to come out and really do some damage.

I asked earlier when Ben Duckett would play his first reverse sweep. I didn't expect him to wait until he'd scored 103 runs.

  14. Eng 216-3published at 33 overs

The hundred is up and Ben Duckett looks determined to keep going for a while yet.

He ends what had been another very tidy Adam Zampa over with a boundary, nailing a reverse sweep into the gap behind square.

Joe Root's lbw dismissal was only the fifth false shot he'd played in the innings today, an overall false shot of 6%. This was Root's second most secure ODI fifty after the 2019 Cricket World Cup. A well composed, calm and timely half-century.

This is Ben Duckett's slowest ODI century.

His partnership of 158 with Joe Root was England's largest since before the 2023 World Cup.

Ben Duckett's tempo has been fantastic. He's played high reward shots for low risk and taken the right options at the right time. I've really enjoyed how he's gone about it. He's played the field really well and found ways to hit the ball in the right areas.

I'm extremely proud of this, especially as there's been a lot of negativity around England at the moment.

  19. drinks break

    Eng 210-3published at 32 overs

    Brook 0, Duckett 102

Time for drinks and, despite losing Joe Root a couple of overs ago, England are in a strong position.

Ben Duckett is still there and has just reached his hundred, maintaining the record of there being a century in every match so far at this Champions Trophy.
