Unfortunately for Phil Salt, Ravindra Jadeja does not drop catches.

He was reprieved by Axar Patel on six earlier in the innings but India make no mistake this time. It's straight up in the air and into Jadeja's hands at mid-on.

    Here comes Joe Root.

A half-century for Ben Duckett off 36 deliveries.

    He's looked very composed.

England get a free hit off Varun Chakravarthy but Phil Salt can't capitalise. Just a single.

This is a pleasant surprise; when I turned my phone on and didn't get any wicket notifications, I'd assumed India were batting!

  5. Eng 75-0published at 10 overs

    Duckett 48, Salt 24

A good powerplay for England. 75 runs off it and no wickets.

Work to do for India's bowlers, who haven't looked quite up to speed so far today.

  6. 6 runs

    Eng 73-0published at 9.4 overs

First six of the innings goes to Phil Salt, heaving a slower ball from Hardik Pandya over long-on.

I actually hadn't noticed the kit clash... now it's going to annoy me.

I know it’s not as important in cricket as it is in say football but does anyone else get vexed by similar colour strips? Happens a lot now. I like a stark contrast between the two sides! Just me?……I’ll get my coat!!

Four runs off Varun Chakravarthy's first over and crucially for India, no boundaries.

Early signs suggest there is a little variable bounce on this pitch and the Indian bowlers will be disappointed to have let England get off to such a strong start.

Another bowling change for India as they turn to spin.

What can ODI debutant Varun Chakravarthy do?

Needless negativity aside, I think this opening partnership has now shown it can become the new Roy/Bairstow which itself is very exciting for our white ball sides going forwards.

England have scored at least one boundary in every over this morning. Ben Duckett has nine fours on his own.

This is the third successive 50+ partnership for Ben Duckett and Phil Salt as opening partners. They average 52.6 as an opening pair in seven ODIs, scoring at 6.7 runs per over.

They are yet to register a century stand, though, with their highest partnership being 75 runs in the previous ODI. England will hope they convert their partnership into a big one today.

England are capable of competing with the best sides in the world only if they get their batting tempo right and their top 7 face most of the balls. Trying to score only in boundaries is silly!

  16. Eng 53-0published at 6.5 overs

50 partnership up for England courtesy of another four for Ben Duckett.

That shouldn't be the case, however, with Phil Salt dropped on six in the previous over.

Although he was dismissed playing a pull shot in the previous ODI, it is a shot that has brought Ben Duckett a good amount of success in ODIs - he has scored 120 runs off 63 balls playing the pull shot at an average of 60 and at a strike rate of 190.

He has pounced on any deliveries that have been marginally short today, scoring 25 runs off 10 deliveries employing either the pull or the cut shot.

    Reprieve for Phil Salt.

Axar Patel has just dropped a sitter on the boundary. He has the ball in two hands and it bounces out.

    Oh dear.

There are a few England players who really need to step up today and show why they should be among the best 11 we can put together. There are a couple who are very lucky to keep getting in the team based on performances from years ago.
