Laura Wolvaardt is down on her haunches; these two have ran so well. The West Indies fielders are right back on the boundary and they need to come in about 5 or 10 yards to have a chance at stopping this partnership.

  2. SA 99-0published at 14 overs

    20 needed from 36 balls

Ouch, South Africa keep picking out poor Shamilia Connell in the field.

She tries to get round at backward square to block Brits' sweep off Ramharack, but dives over the ball on its way to the ropes.

Wolvaardt takes a single into mid-wicket to move one run from her fifty and South Africa's hundred.

There is a real sense under the West Indies fielders that this game is gone. South Africa are on the charge and the West Indies body language suggests their morale has gone.

  4. SA 89-0published at 13 overs

    30 needed from 42 balls

Wolvaardt crashes Fletcher's first ball straight down the ground for her seventh four.

A two in the covers takes her to 47, but she can't get the final two balls of the over away - the fifty will have to wait.

These two batters have found the boundary easier to come by, but they've also ran really well too. They've picked up the 1s and 2s when they have been on offer. This will be crucial further in the tournament - which team is the fittest to put the hard work in, when the outfield is slow?

  6. SA 81-0published at 12 overs

    38 needed from 48 balls

The South African batters work Hayley Matthews around for five singles.

It's all looking very easy out there.

It's a really good pitch here. West Indies are bowling with a little bit more pace which I think is helping South Africa. When the lights come on later, I think the wicket will just pick up more and more pace. It will be interesting to see the contrast between the Dubai and Sharjah pitches.

  8. How's stat?!published at 13:38 British Summer Time 4 October

Laura Wolvaardt scored 29% of South Africa’s runs when she played at the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023, the second-best rate of any player for a team in the tournament behind Ireland's Gaby Lewis (30%).

  9. SA 76-0published at 11 overs

    43 needed from 54 balls

Back comes Afy Fletcher, a little too quickly as she tries to bowl her first ball before the umpire is ready.

Brits fires her for four at long off, beating the chasing Connell down there, then takes two past point.

She's now on 36, just one less than Wolvaardt - almost caught up after her opener's early charge.

  10. How's stat?!published at 13:32 British Summer Time 4 October

West Indies have won all four of their previous Women’s T20 World Cup matches against South Africa.

Shamilia Connell has bowled really well, we are so used to seeing her bowl short of the wicket. But today she's tried to push the ball further up. I don't think it's a bad tactic to bowl slightly longer to Tazmin Brits, which Connell is doing well.

  12. SA 68-0published at 10 overs

    51 needed from 60 balls

And now an eighth bowler, with Shamilia Connell coming onto bowl.

Brits eases her second ball past short third for four, moving to 27 at a run a ball.

The players will take drinks, with South Africa unbeaten and well set for victory at half way.

We've seen the physios more in this tournament than I've ever seen. They're going to become the stars of the tournament at this point!

  14. SA 60-0published at 9 overs

The West Indies bring in a seventh bowler, a return to seam with Aaliyah Alleyne.

Brits powers her past mid-off for her second four, before Alleyne tries to block Wolvaardt's drive from her final delivery and is clipped on the wrist.

On comes the physio again, meanwhile the South Africans are half way to their target of 119.

Karishma Ramharack has bowled well, it's been very brave bowling. It's so hard to see where those hard returns are going as a bowler. She's only conceded 7 runs but West Indies have yet to secure a wicket .

It was a sharp, sharp chance from Laura Wolvaardt. It came hard back at Karishma Ramharack and she got two hands to it but it plummeted to the ground. The umpire had to take evasive action!

  17. dropped catch

Wolvaardt dropped on 33published at 8 overs

    SA 53-0

    Ooof, that could be costly.

Ramharack has changed ends, and sends down a tidy over.

It was almost crowned with a wicket, with Wolvaardt smacking her penultimate fifth straight back at the West Indies spinner at head height.

Ramharack can't hold on - it was hit hard, the umpire was ducking out of the way as well.

If we could sum up Laura Wolvaardt in one clip...

  19. SA 51-0published at 7 overs

We'll see a lot of spin in this tournament - veteran leg-break bowler Afy Fletcher is the next to step up for the West Indies.

Brits guides the 37-year-old to the point boundary for three, before bringing up South Africa's 50 with a single into the covers from the penultimate delivery of the over.

A risky shot from Tazmin Brits, it got a lot of elevation, but it was certainly risky with a long-on in place...
