Zak Crawley owes England a minimum of 55 runs after that drop. Trouble is he could get a duck and still know he’s a shoo-in for the next.

    Mark B

Over 12 months later and I’m still baffled by the decision to force Jimmy to retire. Fair enough rotate him a bit more frequently etc but he’s still one of the best bowlers in the country. Look what Deep and Siraj bowled with the new ball compared to what we’ve served up, disappointing.

There is a lot of rain around tomorrow. The chase is already in world record territory. Get to a maximum lead of 450 then declare with the aim of having half an hour at England before tea.

We are thinking that this England team have matured slightly and become smart so I am hoping that they can see a draw here as a get-out-of-jail because in a couple of months a draw in Australia could end up being necessary.

  4. Ind 246-4published at 51 overs

It looks like England have moved a couple of fielders in for Ravindra Jadeja after he gets on strike for the final ball of the over. He responds with a strong block.

Ben Stokes will have a bowl.

  6. Ind 245-4published at 50 overs

    India lead by 425 runs

Josh Tongue and England have abandoned the short ball plan following Rishabh Pant's departure.

Ravindra Jadeja (3 off 16) and Shubman Gill (64 off 77) pick up a single apiece and India's lead reaches 425 runs.

    Jofra Archer is signing autographs.

343 runs by Rishabh Pant is the most by a wicketkeeper in the first two Tests in England.

  8. Eng 243-4published at 49 overs

England's ground fielding has been a bit sloppy this session.

Ollie Pope lets one through at cover and Shubman Gill alertly dashes through for a single.

A combination of placement and good running sees India add another six runs to their lead.

484 runs by Shubman Gill so far is the third-most any player has made in the first two Tests in England. Graeme Smith and Graham Gooch are the only ones with more.

The Hollies, which has become distracted over the past 30 minutes, is serenading Jofra Archer again as he runs some drinks around the boundary.

Maiden for Josh Tongue. He'll have been happy to see Rishabh Pant wandering off.

Josh Tongue has bowled 10 overs in this spell and taken 1-79.

  13. Ind 237-4published at 47 overs

    India lead by 417 runs

Interesting... India have sent out Ravindra Jadeja, who scored 89 (137) and put on 203 (279) for the sixth wicket with Shubman Gill in the first innings, instead of Nitish Kumar Reddy.

He gets off the mark with a single.

A tumbling Rishabh Pant sweeps the first ball of the over for four.

He dances down to try and heave the next delivery out of the ground but ends up chucking his bat and picking out the safe hands of Ben Duckett in the deep.

Pant departs for an entertaining 65 (58).

Re when should India declare. The record chase in Tests is 418. I wouldn't go far beyond that if I were Gill. Several England batters are under pressure. Call out their belief they can chase 450 in nine hours. I suspect they'll prefer to close it out at 550+ and an hour bowling tonight.

    Gilo in Moscow

We bowled fantastically this morning bowling properly, and could have had Rishabh Pant out twice. Why have we changed tactics?

    Jack

What England's bowling attack need is the new James Anderson and Stuart Broad. Is anyone up and coming in the county scene?

From the bowling changes today, Tongue is not going to play next week. I reckon Carse will probably miss out next week and Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes will play.

  18. Ind 232-3published at 46 overs

One boundary every over is doing the trick for India at the moment.

Shubman Gill defends the first three balls of Josh Tongue's 13th over before skipping down and picking a gap between cover and point for four. Glorious.

    It's the only scoring shot.

  19. Ind 228-3published at 45 overs

Rishabh Pant holds the pose after getting down on one knee, back leg outstretched, to sweep Shoaib Bashir for four.

    This is fun.

I imagine India will bat through to the tea break and then for another hour, by which time the lead will be well over 500. England will then have a difficult hour to survive tonight and all day tomorrow. Does Harry Brook still think we can win it?

If you had to name your starting XI for the next Test now, who's out and who comes in? I want to see some fresh faces in the bowling group. I just don't think any of this line up worry the Indian batters. As for the top order, it feels like Zak Crawley in particular would be on borrowed time under any other leadership team.

    Johnny in Devon

If Steve Smith is watching this game he will be licking his lips at the prospect of some big centuries. We don't seem to have a single clue on getting a batter out at the moment.
