Boundaries, flying bats and dropped catches - Pant's 'box office' innings

  1. Ind 304-4published at 67 overs

    India lead by 484 runs

Shoaib Bashir rattles through the remaining three deliveries, conceding a single, so we will have one more over before tea.

This is an excellent innings from Shubman Gill, the way he is carrying himself, the hunger is still there. You need to have the hunger to succeed again and again after the double-hundred in the first innings.

  3. 100 runs

Century for Shubman Gillpublished at 66.3 overs

Gill reaches his century for India - his third in four innings

Dot, dot and there it is! Shubman Gill runs a single to bring up three figures off 129 balls.

The helmet comes off and he salutes all around the ground.

We're running out of words to describe his performances and there's still three Tests to come this summer.

  4. Ind 302-4published at 66 overs

Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill exchange early singles before Jadeja gallantly blocks out the remaining three balls to allow his skipper - on 99 - to be on strike for what could be the final over before tea.

  5. Ravi's returnpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time

Remember the brilliant story of Ravi from the first Test? Well, this morning Ravi met the TMS team, some of the England players and his hero, Yashasvi Jaiswal. TMS are running a feature at tea, while a video is coming soon to social media, the BBC Sport website and on Today at the Test.

  6. Ind 300-4published at 65 overs

    India lead by 480 runs

Ravindra Jadeja walks a single to bring up India's 300. Applause ripples around Edgbaston.

Shubman Gill is on 98 (124). He has seven minutes to get there before tea (and crucially, deny Tim the honour of typing it).

  7. How's stat?!published at 15:31 British Summer Time

Association of Cricket Statisticians & Historians: In all Tests, there have been 207 cases prior to this one of a team leading by 450+ at the end of the third innings. The team doing so won 178 of those matches, drew 29 and lost none. Raise that to 500, there have been 91 cases and only six chasing teams managed to avoid defeat.

  8. Ind 299-4published at 64 overs

    India lead by 479 runs

Shubman Gill might just be exhausted, Cheteshwar. He and Jamie Smith are both due a well-earned rest.

If you look at Shubman Gill, he is in a little bit of pain. Not sure what's going on there.

For those asking about the weather tomorrow, it looks like it could be a wet morning but by lunch, we'll be fine.

  11. Ind 296-4published at 63 overs

Boundaries are starting to flow again for India. Ravindra Jadeja cuts Shoaib Bashir for four.

I think if I were in the India camp, I'd want about 90 minutes to bowl at England this evening.

Hello, in all of the excellent theorising regarding India's declaration, I don't hear the weather factored in? Isn't tomorrow morning potentially iffy?

    David in Croydon

Just bought tickets for tomorrow, suddenly wanting India to bat for hours so I can get to see more cricket ! Looking forward to it.

    Tim

I don't understand what India are doing. They should have added a quick extra 50 or so, got England in for an awkward little period before tea, and then have to start again after tea chasing 500. They are wasting their own time!

To win a game, you need to be ready to lose a game. You have to be courageous. That's how you play positive cricket, you don't want a boring draw.

  14. Ind 289-4published at 62 overs

    India lead by 469 runs

Shubman Gill takes one ball to get his eye in against Joe Root before sweeping him for four through a large gap in the field.

A further two singles and a two are added to India's lead.

I've just noticed how quickly Ravindra Jadeja runs between the wickets. Rapid.

Joe Root enters the attack for the first time in India's second innings.

Will we see a cartwheel in his run-up, given he's been practising his acrobatics in the slip cordon with Harry Brook?

If India have to take 10 wickets, they will need more than 100 overs to bowl. You need to be brave. We saw the results in the last game, if England can chase down 370, can they chase 500 plus? Maybe not.

But the Indian dressing room will be wary and that is the decision they have to make. Even if they lose, you need to be brave in this game.

Ravindra Jadeja sticks with defence for the time being. A maiden for Shoaib Bashir.

I think Shubman Gill is looking for a declaration and that's why he is looking to play more positively.

  19. Ind 281-4published at 60 overs

    India lead by 461 runs

That's not a particularly attractive shot from Shubman Gill, possibly the ugliest he's played across either innings.

He charges at Ben Stokes and it goes high into the air before plopping into a gap in the deep with a thud. Intent? Plenty. Attractiveness? Nil.

He and Ravindra Jadeja run off all but one delivery, picking up seven runs.

  20. Ind 274-4published at 59 overs

Is that the sign that Ravindra Jadeja wants to cut loose?

He gallops down to Shoaib Bashir but makes a mess of the connection. He's a little fortunate that his slice doesn't fly closer to the mid-wicket fielder.
