Even the way Rishabh Pant defends the ball on occasions keeps you interested. He sees out the remainder of Shoaib Bashir's over.

England will sneak in six more balls from Josh Tongue before the lunch interval.

Joe Root, I think, didn't see it. Ollie Pope didn't see it either. Fractionally short from Shoaib Bashir and Rishabh Pant punishes him.

  3. Ind 173-3published at 36.2 overs

Slower from Shoaib Bashir and Rishabh Pant swivels on his heels and pulls him for four. To be fair, that was a calculated shot from the India wicketkeeper-batter.

Josh Tongue can be so frustrating He looks good at times but bowls too many loose deliveries.

  5. Ind 169-3published at 36 overs

Rishabh Pant gets off strike to Josh Tongue to leave Shubman Gill to see off the rest of the over from Josh Tongue. If India's captain wants his colleague to see it through until lunch he might be best advised to hog the strike.

Rishabh Pant is a one-man Bazball, discuss. Can't keep your eyes off him when he's out in the middle.

Our colleague with an ear to to the stump microphone, Karan, has heard Shubman Gill telling Rishabh Pant to calm himself down and see it through until lunch.

There's 10 minutes to go. Let's see if India's great entertainer listens...

My only worry is Shoaib Bashir is going to bowl a lot of overs and I am not sure he'll slow the run rate down. Therefore, that lead is only going to get higher and whilst he will give the seamers a bit of a rest, he is going to be leaking runs.

  9. Ind 166-3published at 35 overs

This game is rattling along now as Shoaib Bashir goes through an over.

In case you missed it. Rishabh Pant, however, was dropped a little earlier.

Chris Woakes did get a hand to it, his right hand. Technically a chance and that's the second life for Rishabh Pant.

Penultimate ball of the over and a leading edge off Rishabh Pant's over loops up but a diving Chris Woakes cannot quite cling on with a one-handed effort.

Pant is going to collect his bat from backward square leg. Remarkable moment, a massive slog and the bat came out of his hand.

Mohammad Azharuddin vs South Africa in 1996 off 74 balls is the answer to that poser.

Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant throws the absolute kitchen sink at a delivery from Josh Tongue. So much so that he lets go of his bat and neds up down at square leg to much guffawing all round.

England need to bowl the Indian side out and you cannot go defensive because then India will get the score that they want. When you can't stop the scoring rate, you'd rather try to bowl the side out. If you look at the way the pitch is behaving now, there is a chance to pick up wickets.

Rishabh Pant has a strike-rate of 210 while coming down the track in Test cricket - the best among 25 batters who have scored at least 400 runs since such records began in 2006, bettering even current England head coach Brendon McCullum, who is second on the list with a strike-ate of 201.

I like to call that the standing sweep. That is a remarkable shot. Get your line slightly wrong and he'll punish you. There's two fielders out there and he's still taking them on.
