'What an extraordinary shot!' - Pant sends Tongue for six again

Brilliant innovative batting from Rishabh Pant as he plays a falling-over-slog-sweep shot to Josh Tongue's penultimate delivery and it sails into the stands for six.

We could have 25 minutes of pre-lunch entertainment here.

  2. Ind 146-3published at 31.2 overs

You would imagine the bars are emptying at Edgbaston and backsides are on seats now that Rishabh Pant is out in the middle. He waspishly thrashes a wide delivery from Josh Tongue through point for four more.

Crawley's falling backward as he wasn't set. He was falling away as he was trying to catch the ball. It might have smacked him in the chest as well.

You can't ask for an easier catch, that was the chance with Rishabh Pant on 10. That could be a very damaging miss. Zak Crawley will be reliving that, goes through his mind and replaying it in his mind.

  5. dropped catch

'What happened there?' - Pant dropped by Crawley at mid-off

Final ball of the over and Rishabh Pant hammers Ben Stokes to Zak Crawley, who makes a dog's dinner of the catch and drops it.

    How costly could that prove?

It’s cloudy and there’s a bit of movement here. Generally like Ben Stokes as a captain especially in the field but I’d like to see more in the slips to get these wickets.

How many easy runs are conceded by no third man. Surely something to be rectified.

A little bit of chalk and cheese with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant.

Gill opens the face and uses the pace of the ball to dreamily guide Ben Stokes down through the vacant third region for four.

If Rishabh Pant plays an hour, game is a goner for England.

The next wicket needs to fall quickly, with these two, or India will be out of sight by tea.

There is a bit more in the pitch and Rishabh Pant will want to unsettle the bowler and he will be looking to counter-attack.

'He's not keeping quiet today!' - Pant hits 10 off two balls

Baseball-style hitting from Rishabh Pant, who steps down the pitch to Josh Tongue and with a cross-batted slap whacks Josh Tongue into the stands for six.

That was his fourth ball. Pant is absolute box office.

  11. Ind 126-3published at 29.2 overs

Rishabh Pant bingo in full effect.

The India batter dances down the ground to Josh Tongue's first ball from the round wicket but the England bowler follows him.

Next ball Pant pulls Tongue round the corner for four.

There is something so satisfying and enjoyable about the sound of stumps rattling out the ground.

Brilliant ball, angled in and just moved away. And KL Rahul was surprised by that delivery which was coming in and straightened after pitching. And Josh Tongue goes wide of his crease which means the ball is angled in even more.

'Absolutely cleaned him up' - Tongue bowls Rahul for 55

KL Rahul plays down the wrong line, and is on his way back to the pavilion.

It's a good length delivery from Josh Tongue and the India opener, having done all of the hard work this morning, sees the ball crash into his middle stump and it's knocked out of the ground.

A slight misjudgement and Rahul is punished. If you keep the stumps in play you are always in the game.

It's a quite partnership, they are moving along but the score board isn't quick ticking along as rapid as India would have hoped.

  16. Ind 126-2published at 29 overs

Lots of ifs, buts and maybes for England this morning.

A little strange the buccaneering Ben Stokes has not felt compelled to gamble with more men in the cordon to hunt wickets during this period.

Jamie Smith concedes his first bye of the innings after one from Stokes awkwardly bounces in front of him.

For the period that Karun Nair spent on the pitch, he looked comfortable. Next Test will be another opportunity and he will need to make the most of it.

KL Rhaul edges again wide of the slips. This time off Ben Stokes.

There's no deep third in place so he picks up four. Still just two men in the cordon.

Today, Brydon Carse has bowled 15 balls to Nair across three overs. His first six deliveries were hard lengths, making Nair uncomfortable. In the next over, he bowled good lengths with an average length of 6.7m. Then, in the following over, he went full and targeted the stumps, even getting one to swing away. The last two balls Nair faced were the fullest Carse has bowled today, at a length of 4.2m.

    Oh behave, Shubman Gill.

A truly elegant drive drive off Josh Tongue brings him four and there's the hold-the-pose follow-through as well.

Ben Stokes is limbering up to replace Brydon Carse at the Birmingham End of the ground.
