Chris Woakes is whipped out of the attack and replaced by Josh Tongue.

A full delivery with his fourth ball and KL Rahul drives classically which leaves Brydon Carse in pursuit.

Carse prevents the boundary but Rahul has the three runs needed to reach his half-century.

India need 520 by 5:20pm today. There's an hour of play left after that with 12 or 13 overs. That way they'll get a crack with the new ball today and tomorrow and obviously the second new ball later tomorrow as well.

  3. Ind 109-2published at 27 overs

There speaks a loyal Kent fan.

Brydon Carse is still finding movement and bounce off this pitch after drinks. He bowls a maiden, and puts everything into it, which suggests it may well be the last over of this spell.

Ill tell you who would take wickets in these conditions, Darren Stevens. You know deep down it's true.

Ball has been more on top of the bat, hasn't it? It's hard to captain this morning because you have a set plan but the first hour it's played like a traditional English style and you need the slip cordon but Ben Stokes has gone out with the belief that it'll be like the subcontinent and I can completely understand why. The lights and clouds are out and it's a different day.

Just the one wicket for England this morning.

    India's lead is 289 runs.

The amount of runs that's gone down to the third man this morning, it seems to be more than the previous three days. That's an indication that the ball is certainly doing a little bit more.

  8. Ind 109-2published at 26 overs

It depends, Paul. They would probably bowl a few balls which you simply could not lay bat on. If they start to target the stumps, though, I think it would be curtains pretty quickly for your lads.

Shubman Gill plays a defensive prod to Chris Woakes which squirts through backward point for four.

England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith has come up to the stumps to ensure Gill cannot bat outside of his crease as is his wont.

New to cricket, but had a wonderful first three days at Headingley and play for our pub team, the Sussex Ox. Question - do you reckon any of our batters (classic pub team, with a couple who can get 50 in a 20/20) could survive an over against any of the England or Indian bowlers?

KL Rahul deliberately and wide of the slips guides the ball down for a four.

  11. Ind 105-2published at 25 overs

Hang it up there and let the ball do the work seems to the mantra, then.

Brydon Carse is a bit wider to KL Rahul midway through his latest over, though, and the India batter cannot resist a risky little dab at it. The ball races through the vacant third region for four.

England will not mind him hanging his bat out to those.

25% of the deliveries bowled so far from England bowlers would have hit the stumps which is more than twice what the teams have done in first three days.

"A lovely shot" - Rahul hits Carse for four

KL Rahul seems to have become a better player with longer hair. He was always a good player when he was meticulously trimmed but now he seems to have become a better player.

    Lead by 281

Chris Woakes continues, keeping it tight from the other end with Shubman Gill getting forward well to defend.

A maiden from the Warwickshire seamer, who finishes his over off with a slower ball down the legside which Gill misses. Chuckles all round.

England bowling in partnerships. Meanwhile, KL Rahul has moved on to 42 now.

Lots of crazy talk about chasing 520 etc. Aside from one partnership, we looked "lucky to get nil" in the first innings. If India don't win this by hundreds of runs they will be rightly distraught. Weather the only hope for England.

    Anon

Is England's apparent obsession with setting up a game just so they can chase down 500 getting a bit silly now?

Ben Stokes was right as there was clear contact between bat and ball. No damage done but there would have been a few concerned Indian fans. Shubman Gill will retain strike.

  17. Gill is not outpublished at 22 overs

UltraEdge shows a big thick edge from Shubman Gill's bat before it hit his pad.

  18. England reviewpublished at 22 overs

Now then. A big appeal from Brydon Carse after he strikes Shubman Gill on the pad.

Ben Stokes thinks he's heard an inside edge but is convinced by his cabinet to review it.

Karun Nair vs pace in this series:

    • Full (<6.25m) – 3 dismissals, 18 average, 142 SR
    • Good (6.25–8m) – 0 dismissals, 12 SR
    • Short (>8m) – 1 dismissal, 12 average, 20 SR

Nair has been scoring at a high rate against full-length deliveries, but they have also been his Achilles' heel in this series so far.

  20. Ind 100-2published at 22.4 overs

Brydon Carse continues after claiming the wicket of Karun Nair in his previous over.

A little bit of movement through the air for the tall Durham seamer, who has Shubman Gill

There's a bit of confusion as Ben Stokes wangs the ball towards the slip cordon but nobody is paying attention and Joe Root has to set off in hot pursuit to prevent it crossing the boundary.

Perhaps uncertain if its dead, or maybe they didn't notice, India don't run.
