Mark (@16:03) is maybe putting it too far, but this attack has no consistency and players picked above their actual ability, better players in the Championship, but obviously their faces don't fit when it comes to selection.

Shoaib Bashir continues, and Shubman Gill pulls him square for four.

The England off-spinner looks set to take a bit of tap from both batters here.

This is the time to cash in and make the most of the situation and Shubman Gill is doing just that.

Is it me or has Chris Woakes not looked himself this series so far? Usually world class in English conditions but not reaching those heights when he should be leading this attack.

Why has Brydon Carse, our best and most threatening bowler today by miles, not bowled since the middle of the first session? The tactics in this test have been totally inexplicable.

Between 12-15 overs is ideal for India tonight. More than that would make the ball soft for tomorrow morning.

  7. 6 runs

    Ind 327-4published at 69.3 overs

Shubman Gill with the joy of six now, as he skips down the track to Chris Woakes and almost chips the ball over the sightscreen and into the stands for a maximum.

Next ball, Gill whips it across the line for four. He then picks a slower ball from Woakes and cuts it for another four.

India are going full throttle now.

  8. 6 runs

    Ind 313-4published at 69 overs

    Quite the take, that, Mark...

If India fans get wind of this you might end up like Steve from Southampton the other week with 17,000+ thumbs down.

Straight after tea and Ravindra Jadeja smacks Shoaib Bashir back over his head for six. It looks like India are ready to up the ante.

This England bowling attack are not just the worst in their history but the worst in international cricket. Shubman Gill isn’t even that good. But England, like they always do, make average players into superstars.

As expected, no declaration from India at tea.

Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja are making their way out to the middle.

Shubman Gill has been incredible in this Test match, but for pure box office entertainment it's hard to look beyond Rishabh Pant's innings earlier today. It had everything.

India are clearly playing on England's ego here. If they leave them 100 odd overs to bat, that is not the most difficult of tasks to draw the test match. Let’s really see if it is Bazball with brains.

Surely, if England really wanted to, they could bat out 3.5 sessions for a draw on a flat pitch without Bumrah? That would be a step forward in terms of being a ruthless great test team, as opposed to one that blows hot and cold!

Gill reaches his eighth century for India

Shubman Gill now has the highest match aggregate for a batter from India.

    • 369 - Shubman Gill v England, 2025
    • 344 - Sunil Gavaskar v West Indies, 1971
    • 340 - VVS Laxman v Australia, 2001
    • 330 - Sourav Ganguly v Pakistan, 2007
    • 319 - Virender Sehwag v South Africa, 2008

Incidentally, the highest aggregate runs scored by any batter in a Test match is the 456 runs scored by Graham Gooch, achieved against India in 1990. He scored 333 in the first innings and 123 in the second.

Gill’s aggregate of 369 now ranks 10th on the all-time list for most runs scored in a Test match.

Opposite of Bazball? We’re watching it… Fearball I call it.

It's right that India bat England out of the game. Going 2-0 down would be a bit of a calamity. I think they could easily pick up three English wickets in 15 overs tonight.

    David

Shubman Gill deserves all the plaudits for his batting, but his captaincy has a long way to go. The way him and Ravindra Jadeja have approached this session has given England a sniff of a draw. They're behind in the series, and risk throwing away a chance to level up. I'd love to see how WinViz compares the likelihood of a draw now compared to two hours ago.

No-nonsense approach from Ravindra Jadeja before tea. Solid defence.

India lead by 484 runs at tea, with Shubman Gill bringing up his third century of the series.

    He's unbeaten on 100 (130) while Jadeja has 25 (68).

England has conceded 890 runs in this match - the most they have conceded in the 21st century, surpassing the 875 runs they gave up against India in Rajkot last year, in 2024. Overall, this now ranks seventh on the all-time list for most runs conceded by England in a Test match.
