Summary

  1. Eng 58-1published at 7 overs

Another tidy over for West Indies, two in a row after the carnage of the previous five.

England are in a good position now, though, after being put under a bit of pressure in the first over.

  2. Eng 56-1published at 6.3 overs

Three dot balls to start Alzarri Joseph's latest and Misbah-ul-Haq can rest easy.

He keeps the record for the fastest Test half-century.

Ben Duckett is on 39 and Ian Botham's England record is looking that bit safer, too.

  3. Eng 56-1published at 6 overs

After two overs for 28, it is no shock to see Jayden Seales withdrawn from the attack.

West Indies call for the experienced Jason Holder to try and bring back some measure of control and he does just that.

Only a single from the over. England are slacking...

  5. Fastest half-centuries in Testspublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 18 July

Ben Duckett has made a rollicking start at Trent Bridge. He could break some records...

The fastest half-century in Tests, in terms of balls faced, are:

    • 21 balls - Misbah-ul-Haq (Pakistan v Australia, 2014)
    • 23 balls - David Warner (Australia v Pakistan, 2017)
    • 24 balls - Jacques Kallis (South Africa v Zimbabwe, 2005)

England's fastest is Ian Botham's 28-ball attempt against India in Delhi in 1981.

This is the fastest a team has ever reached 50 in a Test match innings.

This is the highest total after five overs of a Test as a result.

  7. Eng 55-1published at 5 overs

Pulled through mid-wicket and that's another boundary for Ben Duckett.

He's raced to 38 from 17 balls. Relentless.

  8. Eng 50-1published at 4.2 overs

Four more - and that's the fifty partnership.

It has taken Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope less than four overs to bring it up.

It's also the quickest England have got to 50 as a team in a Test. Or at least in games where that data is available.

    This has been quite remarkable.

Ben Duckett has just hit his first four balls of an innings for four. That has only happened twice, where ball-by-ball data has been recorded.

The only other time was Quinton de Kock against New Zealand in August 2016 when he also hit his first four balls for four.

  10. Eng 44-1published at 4 overs

Well, four overs into day one of this Test match and England have got a score on the board that they'd be delighted with fours overs into a T20.

Two more boundaries in Jayden Seales' second over, Ben Duckett gets them both.

The first is punched through point and the next is tipped round the post on the bounce at gully.

By my reckoning, Crawley's dismissal to the third ball of the match is the earliest an England opener has been dismissed since Rory Burns to the first ball of the Ashes series at the Gabba in 2021.

Here is that wicket in the first over of the match. Excellent bowling from Alzarri Joseph.

Things have not gone as well for the tourists since then...

  13. Eng 35-1published at 3 overs

    The boundaries just keep flowing.

After a pair of twos square on the leg side, Ollie Pope guides a shorter delivery past gully to the boundary and then whips another through mid-wicket.

The second should have been stopped in the ring, really, but England won't complain.

From 0-1, suddenly they're flying at Trent Bridge.

    Jessop alert!

Gilbert Jessop has the fastest Test century for England. It came off 76 balls against Australia at The Oval in 1902.

Boom, boom, boom, boom! He looks like a man on a mission here, Ben Duckett.

He has had some good deliveries to put away to be fair, but you have still got to do it. They weren't easy boundaries but they were full deliveries.

  16. Eng 23-1published at 2 overs

Four boundaries in a row for Ben Duckett. Not a bad way to start!

Jayden Seales switched to round the wicket after the first two but was promptly whipped through mid-wicket and then driven through the covers again by the England left-hander.

The seamer eventually stops the boundary barrage with a length ball that beats the edge before Duckett drives for two more to end a very productive over for the hosts.

The first wicket from the Stuart Broad End has already been taken. Here is the great man unveiling it.

If I remember correctly, there was also a wicket in the first over from the James Anderson End at Old Trafford... taken by James Anderson.

  18. Eng 13-1published at 1.2 overs

    Crunch!

Fantastic cover drive from Ben Duckett to get off mark from the first legitimate ball he faces.

After a wide to start, Jayden Seales offers the left-hander a wide half-volley and is punished.

Four more! Short, wide and put away again.

  19. Eng 4-1published at 1 over

Super shot from Ollie Pope to get England off the mark.

Last ball of the first over and the England vice-captain drives between the stumps and mid-on for four.

Still, that's a fantastic first over from Alzarri Joseph. Plenty of movement for the West Indies seamer.

The gamble has worked for the West Indies! A great opening three deliveries from Alzarri Joseph. It was right around that chest and slightly fuller.

It was a good delivery, just around waist-height, and it was well-caught from the third slip diving forward.

What a great start for the West Indies! That's just what they needed. I fancied Joseph - he was hurt from that performance at Lords and he has started lovely.
