Summary

  1. Eng 142-2published at 29 overs

Pope picks up four, pulling into the leg side. He doesn't quite hold of it, but that means the ball bounces awkwardly in front of the diving fielder at mid-wicket, beating them on its way to the ropes.

The umpires then pause the game to take a look at the ball after a complaint from Kraigg Brathwaite. After examining it with the relevant contraption, they decide to change it.

  2. 50 runs

    Eng 138-2

And there's the half century for Ollie Pope!

He clips Jayden Seales into the leg side to bring up the landmark from 81 balls.

    Time to kick-on now.

The morning session would have looked different with a third wicket in the final over before lunch! After the first hour, West Indies have definitely pulled things back together. Sinclair, the spinner, was tidy.

You just feel if they had held onto that catch it would have changed the tone. Three wickets going into lunch, you would take that most days of the week after winning the toss...

  4. Eng 135-2published at 27 overs

Pope moves to 48, flicking Joseph into the leg side.

He might have expected more than a single, but Kraigg Brathwaite, diving to his left at short mid-wicket, denies the England number three his fifty for now.

I think Sam Cook's ready to go. He doesn't bowl express pace, but he doesn't bowl bad balls. He's on you all the time.

The thing we've learnt over time. Your natural action's best, you refine it. But injuries do happen to young men, and some have a robustness while others pick up a lot of injuries, and there's not a lot they can do about that.

When I was captain, we played Woakes, Stokes, Broad and Anderson. They all tried to get wickets in similar ways, as captain if they're all trying to bowl top of off, if it's not working you don't have a Plan B. The Australian attack of Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and Lyon are four very different bowlers.

Pace is still a great thing to have. You can be successful in county level, sitting the ball on the top of off stump. The powers that be have tried to negate that, to provide pace and spin.

It's down to Ollie Robinson to earn the trust of the England management. And there's a history of players who've done that. There ball's in his court, there's no reason we won't see him in an England shirt again.

    Hello, hello.

That was a fun session, wasn't it?

Tell you what, it's glorious weather at Trent Bridge. Indeed, most of the country seems to be enjoying a rare bit of sun today.

But ignore all that, draw the curtains and settle down with us for cricket, eh?

England's top-order have done the job this morning but during the lunch break on BBC Test Match Special, focus will turn to the bowlers.

The fast bowlers to be more specific with former England coach Peter Moores and Telegraph journalist Will Macpherson joining Sir Alastair Cook and Jonathan Agnew to discuss how Ben Stokes' side will move forward without James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

    Pope 47, Root 13

England's morning after a blistering start under clear blue skies at Trent Bridge.

West Indies did get rid of Zak Crawley third ball after opting to bowl but Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope combined to bring up England's fastest 50 in Tests.

Duckett reached his half-century from 32 balls before eventually falling to Shamar Joseph for 71 and the West Indies have pulled things back somewhat.

That drop could prove costly, though, as Pope and Joe Root will return after lunch with the home side in a strong position.

    Eng 134-2

Big chance for West Indies just before lunch.

Ollie Pope tries to cut the ball past gully but hits it straight at Alick Athanaze.

It goes quickly but it should still be taken. Real let off for Pope.

Time for one last over before lunch.

  18. Eng 133-2published at 25 overs

Joe Root gets two more into the leg-side to complete the scoring for the over.

He's now gone past Mahela Jayawardene into ninth on the list of all-time Test run-scorers.

There will be a few more on that list, he'll be wanting to get past before he calls it a day...

  19. Eng 131-2published at 24.3 overs

Short from Alzarri Joseph and Joe Root pulls in front of square for four.

Not timed but it's a fast outfield and a short boundary so there's no chance of the fielder reeling it in.

  20. Eng 126-2published at 24 overs

Jayden Seales goes searching for a wicket at the end of another good over.

It causes him to over-pitch and Joe Root gratefully clips the ball through mid-wicket for his first boundary of the innings.
