One of the factors will be how badly West Indies struggled with the bat at Lord's and their batting line-up they have for this match.

Five of their top eight have played six or fewer Tests.

The three experienced players in that top eight, including Brathwaite, Holder and Da Silva, have all been struggling for form recently.

Brathwaite has averaged just 15 in his last eight Tests, going back to February 2023.

Alzarri Joseph also returns to the attack and squares Joe Root up with a ball that bounces to hit the shoulder of the bat.

Root ends the over with a flick off his pads for two to deep backward square having faced 10 dot balls in a row prior to that.

  3. Eng 118-2published at 22 overs

Two overs for 28 becomes three overs for 28 for Jayden Seales as he gets through a maiden over to Joe Root.

The seamer produces one particularly good ball, full and nipping away from the former England captain.

It stayed low as well so Root will be delighted to see it slide past off stump.

The first half an hour was fun to watch for an England fan. This is the new era of England batters. If they get these conditions and get that loose bowling, they are going to cash in.

It's good to see that there have maybe been a few conversations between the captain and the team at drinks, it feels like more 'normal' Test match behaviour.

Around 20 until until lunch at Trent Bridge and it has most certainly been England's morning so far.

There has been a little bit in this pitch for the seamers but with the sun shining and one particularly short square boundary, it's been pretty good for the batters, too.

Meanwhile, with things having calmed down a touch, Kraigg Brathwaite decides it is safe for Jayden Seales to return to the attack.

  6. 6 runs

    Eng 118-2published at 20.5 overs

That'll do Ollie Pope's confidence the world of good!

After pulling for four the ball before, he dispatches another short ball from Shamar Joseph high over long leg for six!

Ben Duckett will be gutted because I'm pretty sure he would have been thinking he would get a lot more than a 70-odd innings in these conditions.

You do get a sense that someone will go big though... it might be this man Joe Root.

  8. Eng 108-2published at 20 overs

Joe Root is the new batter for England and gets off the mark with a dab just behind square off Kevin Sinclair.

The spinner will not be happy with the fielding last ball of the over as Ollie Pope clipped it to mid-wicket, it rolled gently but somehow got past the fielder for a single.

Shamar Joseph has been good. One of his last balls was 86mph. There was a few times at Lord's where he went off the pitch and I was thinking about whether he was fit. It's good that he has been able to play in this second Test.

He was magnificent in Australia and he has been the pick today. He could have had Pope out on a few occasions.

    WICKETpublished at 19 overs

    Duckett c Holder b S Joseph 71 (Eng 105-2)

Ben Duckett's entertaining innings comes to an end.

There was anguished shout from Shamar Joseph as Duckett drilled the ball to the fence a couple of balls previous but this was a much better delivery.

In that channel just outside off with just a fraction of movement away to take the edge as the England left-hander pushed at it.

It carries to Jason Holder, low down at second slip.

  11. 100 runs

    Eng 101-1published at 18 overs

Ben Duckett brings up the hundred for England with - you guessed it - a boundary.

The left-hander stretches to reach a ball on the full just outside off and sweep it to deep mid-wicket.

The fielder races around, looks to have got there but then misses the ball as he tried to flick it back.

It's been that kind of morning so far for the Windies.

    Ollie Pope worries me...

I just think he has played a lot of Test match cricket now and, whilst he is a wonderful player when he is going, he just gets into these zones where he is a bit too frantic. It is all a bit chaotic and not controlled enough.

He averages under 35 runs as an international number three. If he wants to get to that top-level of being a real high-quality number three, I think he needs to be a little less panicked.

  13. Eng 95-1published at 17 overs

    Pope 30, Duckett 62

Better from Ollie Pope, keeping his shape and timing a drive nicely... but finding the fielder at cover again.

He does connect with a pull shot to end the over and gets a single out to deep mid-wicket.

Ben Duckett hasn't had much of the strike since drinks.

  14. Eng 94-1published at 16.2 overs

Ollie Pope is cut in half after trying to pull Shamar Joseph.

He intimates that the ball stayed a touch low, it might have done but after a positive start, the England number three has lost his way a bit in the last few overs.

Frustration has led to him becoming a frenetic at the crease.

  15. Eng 94-1published at 16 overs

Another milestone comes up for Ben Duckett as he reaches 10,000 first-class runs.

It really should have come up with a boundary as Kevin Sinclair sends a horrible delivery heading well down leg.

Duckett tries to lap-sweep it and the ball plinks off the toe-end to square leg. He probably would have been better off just trying to smash it into the big gap behind square.

I think, particularly with Ollie Pope, he just sometimes loses his balance on and around that off-stump.

That time he didn't, he just missed it, but I do think quality seam attacks around the world will always channel him around this area.

There aren't many who leave the ball these days, particularly in this England line-up, they don't want to let it go through to the keeper.

  17. Eng 91-1published at 15 overs

Ollie Pope misses out on a long half-volley from Shamar Joseph, driving it straight to cover.

Perhaps that leads to the very loose drive next ball. It was in the channel, never there to drive and he's fortunate not to get a nick.

It has been much better from the West Indies since drinks to drag England's run-rate down.

Nick (11:41) just doesn't get it. Pace is the only attack that wins in Australia. We are preserving Wood/Archer so they are fit for the next Down Under series. Jimmy has never been a master down here.

Very steady start from Kevin Sinclair.

No real turn for him yet but he lands it pretty well throughout and there are just a pair of singles from the over.

Ben Duckett has batted brilliantly so far on day one but he's got a new test now as off-spinner Kevin Sinclair comes into the attack for the West Indies.
