Summary

  1. Eng 200-3published at 40 overs

First sight of off-break bowler Kevin Sinclair after lunch, replacing Alzarri Joseph.

Brook sends his final ball to deep point for a single - that's England 200 up, at exactly five an over.

It has been a strange old innings...

I have to say, against a better team, I reckon England would be seven down today.

This is going to be quite a good match-up because you have Jason Holder, who is going to bowl around 80mph with a bit of shape, and he is going to say to Harry Brook: 'Go on then, there's the carrot'.

  3. Eng 198-3published at 39 overs

The England batters get their legs moving, as Harry Brook takes a pair of twos off Jason Holder to take his side into the drinks break.

The hosts have scored 64 runs from 13 overs after lunch, for the loss of Joe Root.

  4. Eng 194-3published at 38 overs

A maiden for Shamar Joseph, bowling to Ollie Pope.

Curiously, from the last five and a half overs England have hit six fours and one six, and not run a single scoring shot.

That spell has included 26 dot balls and two maidens.

  5. 6 runs

    Wallop!

Brook has his first six of the innings, lifting Alzarri Joseph's second delivery over deep point with a certain elegance.

The hit punctuates an otherwise scoreless over from Joseph, who's bowled pretty well since coming back into the attack.

  6. Eng 188-3published at 36 overs

Five further dot balls from Shamar Joseph, who's switched ends to replace Jayden Seales, before Pope turns him round the corner for a four to close the over.

That was too close to Harry Brook, who almost cut that off his throat or chest area!

If you are in that gully, you have got to be getting those.

That is three dropped catches which have all been pretty straightforward... you have got to be taking those, they were three crucial catches.

    Down goes another one!

Alzarri Joseph's penultimate ball cramps Harry Brook a little - he cuts the ball hard straight to gully, where Alick Athanaze spills the ball falling backwards.

Athanaze shakes his fingers - it came at him fast, but he didn't have to move.

The final ball of the over is knocked in the same direction for no run - a maiden for Joseph.

Ollie Pope has played some nice shots so far...

... but he has also had a fair bit of luck.

    Well, they all count.

Pope gets four with a horrible attempted hack to the leg side, the ball taking a thick inside edge and beating keeper Joshua Da Silva, passing on his left on its way to the boundary.

The England batter's next shot is much more convincing, getting on top of a Seales delivery that sits up to be driven through the covers.

I think we are going to see a bit of a short-ball tactic against Harry Brook...

There is a bit of a whisper on the grapevine that early on he looks a little bit wide of off-stump, trying to fetch it from that off-side with a pull or hook shot.

  12. Eng 172-3published at 33 overs

Back-to-back fours in the previous over, this time Harry Brook gets three on the bounce.

He drives Alzarri Joseph's fourth ball through the covers, flicks his fifth to the leg side boundary off his feet, then closes the over with a lovely backward cut.

He's on 24 off 12, someone get those Gilbert Jessop stats out of the wastebin...

  13. Eng 161-3published at 32 overs

Harry Brook rarely takes long to get going!

He strikes consecutive fours at the start of Seales' over, a bit of a bunt over backward point and then a forceful wristy shot in roughly the same area - no stopping that.

  14. Eng 152-3published at 31 overs

    Punishing the drop!

Pope aggressively cuts Shamar Joseph's final delivery into the turf, seeing the ball rocket past backward point for four.

We have spoken about Shamar Joseph just throwing the odd one up there.

This time his ball found the edge but it was not backed up by the fielders, once again! Jason Holder is better than that.

  16. dropped catch

Pope dropped on 54published at 30.3 overs

    Eng 146-3

    Should be gone!

Pope chases a wide Shamar Joseph delivery, slashing an edge that really ought to have been taken by Jason Holder at second slip.

The former captain tries to take the grab at chest height, but the ball spills out. Pope survives a second dropped chance, and even picks up two as the West Indies overthrow with a shy at the stumps.

  17. Eng 143-3published at 30 overs

New batter Harry Brook nudges one square to bring Ollie Pope back on strike.

Seales closes the over by sending an absolute snorter past the edge of England's vice-captain, fast and back of a length, Pope plays on the back foot and just about gets his bat out of the way.

That was such a bizarre shot from Joe Root!

Normally he cuts his shot - you associate Root with cuts, punches, pulls or a little dab down to third man. It might have been playing on his mind a little bit that Jayden Seales has been really full to him.

He probably forced Root to ask himself the question: 'Can I get forward a little bit more?' and then the very next ball was back into the trap and a little wider.

    Seales strikes!

The towering Trinidadian beats the bat of Root with a ball that moves away a tad, then offers a ball back of a length and wide of off stump.

It looks like a cut ball, but Root goes for a pull of the stretch, skying the ball to Alzarri Joseph at mid-on.

The fielder almost makes a hash of a simple catch, juggling the ball before taking it on the third opportunity.

Funnily enough, that is a shot Pope has been trying to play all day. They got away with one or two but I remember there was some nice fielding.

They didn't get it quite right this time, but I wonder if that is something the West Indies could try? Just a little bit shorter than he has been bowling, set someone back on the short square leg boundary and then bring over cover into mid-wicket.
