Only England supporters can find something to moan about after scoring 400 on day one after being put in.

That's the little bit of balance that Chris Woakes gives at eight, with the runs.

There's just a little bit of something in this wicket. That was a good ball, top of off-stump, Woakes was trying to defend it, he didn't do too much wrong, he just held it a little bit and it was caught low down by Jason Holder.

He scored some useful runs and that is the reason why he balances this side out really nicely. I don't think you would want anyone else batting in eight!

    Woakes c Holder b Seales 37 (Eng 408-9)

Chris Woakes goes, just before the close!

Jayden Seales returns to the West Indies attack and Woakes immediately clips him through mid-wicket for four.

Seales then strikes from the following delivery, squaring the England batter up a little and drawing an edge that skews to Holder at second slip.

The former skipper takes a good catch on the dive, and Shoaib Bashir will have to face a few deliveries with the new ball.

I'd say it's likely that the England cricket fans moaning about today's batting performance are the same people that seem to think Gareth Southgate had an awful record as England manager.

Ah, here's the new ball, and Alzarri Joseph returns to take it. The West Indies theoretically have four overs to use it tonight, but they'll likely run out of time to rattle through all of them.

The first delivery from Joseph is a short ball that rises on Woakes at around armpit height - the England batter gets on top of it and turns the ball towards the fine leg boundary for four.

    That takes England past 400.

Still no sight of a new ball, with Hodge into his tenth over.

England work him around for five runs.

  7. Eng 392-5published at 85 overs

Woakes steps down to drive Sinclair down the ground for four, his first boundary of the innings.

    England into the not-especially-nervous-390s.

  8. Eng 387-8published at 84 overs

Wood drops to a knee to slog sweep Hodge into the leg side, but long on runs to their right to cut the ball off.

    England's batters take two.

It has been a curious day - I think that is a great word for it.

England have played nicely. They haven't done too much wrong apart from hitting a bad ball, but then they have found ways to get out. Smith and Stokes sum it up quite nicely, I suppose.

But, they have scored 380 runs so they are in a decent position.

  10. Eng 378-8published at 82 overs

Wood eases Kavem Hodge down towards the third boundary and the England batters hustle through a three.

It's still sunny at Trent Bridge, by the way, although the players are starting to draw long shadows.

The West Indies aren't taking the new ball just yet, Kevin Sinclair is continuing.

Wood continues his charmed life, taking another big swipe at the first ball of the over and seeing Mikyle Louis spill a catch on the dive at point. He takes a single to move to three.

Having returned to the strike, the West Indies appeal for a stumping chance from the final delivery of the over, but the England tailender slid his foot back in time.

Nearly 400 runs on the first day? England might have lost 8 wickets but hey, this is still definitely Bazball!

It wasn't straightforward by any stretch of the imagination, but it should be taken at this level. You are expecting your keeper to effect that stumping.

Mark Wood should be on his way.

He takes a wild flail at Kavem Hodge's delivery, missing and leaving himself far from his crease.

The ball bounces off the top of Joshua Da Silva's gloves and Wood is able to get his bat home.

Mark Wood comes to the crease, knocking the ball square for a first ball single.

Kevin Sinclair celebrates wicket of Gus AtkinsonImage source, Getty Images

His celebration was more muted, more traditional, high-fives all around. It was a good grab by Hodge!

On the basis of what we have seen so far, that was a great catch because he actually took it! On a run-of-the-mill day, it is a regulation slip-catch, but all catches at slip are hard so you have to give him credit.

Fortunately for him, he is left-handed so it has gone to his easy side but it was still a good grab, below knee-height, and he has reacted nicely.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 78.4 overs

    Atkinson c Hodge b Sinclair 2 (Eng 370-8)

A short trip to the middle for Atkinson!

He nicks Kevin Sinclair's delivery and the ball is snaffled by Kavem Hodge at slip.

No somersault from Sinclair on this occasion - maybe it's only reserved for the top-six.

Sorry to be a grump, but the poor shots of Root, Brook and Smith need to be ironed out before they play a better opposition. We are seemingly incapable of pressing home an advantage.

    Eng 369-7

Gus Atkinson has his first runs in Test cricket, turning the ball around the corner for two.

He drives the final ball of the over back at Hodge and... could this be a run out? The ball may have brushed the hands of the bowler on the way to breaking the stumps - has it caught non-striker Woakes unawares?

The TV umpire takes a look and while the ball did indeed make contact with the hand, Woakes got his bat home in time.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 77.4 overs

    Smith c Holder b Hodge 36 (Eng 367-7)

    Six and out!

Jamie Smith heaves Kavem Hodge clear over the long-on boundary, but the West Indies bowler has his revenge from the following delivery and I'm afraid it's another poor shot from an England batter.

He tries to crash the ball in a similar direction, but the ball is a little too wide and he ends up playing cross-batted and not getting hold of it, with Jason Holder running in from the boundary to take the catch.

The hosts have thrown away a few wickets today.
