Summary

  1. Eng 360-6published at 77 overs

Kevin Sinclair returns in place of Jason Holder for a bit of spin before the new ball becomes available in four overs time.

    Three singles from it.

We mentioned about Jason Holder having a tired look, but I don't think we got the chance to time Kevam Hodge's over...

It was electric! I would dare say it took about two minutes between the first ball and last ball.

  3. Eng 357-6published at 76 overs

Chris Woakes denies Kavem Hodge the chance of a first maiden, striking the ball into the covers to take a single and retain the strike.

    A quality cricket shot!

If you look in a textbook about what a great cover drive looks like, it would say get on top of the bounce, get into the ground, lean into the ball, pick the gap.

In the Caribbean, we would say: "Not a man move."

  5. Eng 356-6published at 75 overs

Ah, there's one - Jason Holder offers a ball that eminently drivable and Jamie Smith takes up the offer, powering the ball through the covers.

What are the chances of England getting to 400-ish, declaring and having a bowl tonight - 8-10 overs maybe?

    Lee, Manchester

  7. Eng 349-6published at 74 overs

And another, three singles off the bowling of Kavem Hodge.

England have scored just two boundaries since the 60th over.

  8. Eng 346-6published at 73 overs

    Thanks Sam.

Quiet over to get my stint started, the England batters taking a single apiece from Jason Holder.

Right then, with around an hour left in the day - assuming they don't squeeze 18 overs into the next half an hour - it's time for me to hand over to Mike Peter to take you through to stumps.

In the previous over, I saw Ben Stokes looking to the stand as if he was going to try and play this shot. So he was eyeing it up and it was just a little bit too full and flat, it skidded on to him, and it was straight down Mikyle Louis' throat.

He will be disappointed because he has worked hard for his 69 runs, he hasn't got a huge amount of runs of late, and he would've fancied three figures and beyond.

  11. Eng 344-6published at 72 overs

Good over from Kavem Hodge, just a couple from it and, crucially, the big wicket of Ben Stokes.

Chris Woakes is the new batter, joining Jamie Smith in the middle.

  12. wicket

    Stokes c sub (J Louis) b Hodge 69 (Eng 342-6)

Kavem Hodge has his first Test wicket.

It's another long hop, really, but Ben Stokes doesn't get all of it as he tries to heave it away over deep mid-wicket.

Sub fielder Jeremiah Louis is there waiting and takes the catch.

Frustration for Stokes, who looked well placed to go on and make three figures.

  13. Eng 342-5published at 71 overs

Back under way and after a single first ball from Ben Stokes, Jason Holder reels off five dot balls to Jamie Smith.

Nine overs until the second new ball is available.

In the last few seasons, I don't remember looking at Surrey's scorecard and seeing many low scores from Jamie Smith.

He has just been in a very consistent vein of form. He is a class act. He looks like he knows his game. He has got good front-foot and back-foot options with on-side and off-side cover.

  15. 6 runs

    Eng 341-5published at 70 overs

    That's more like it!

Drag down from Kavem Hodge and Jamie Smith hoists him away over cow corner, clearing the long boundary for six.

Time for drinks and West Indies will be counting down the balls until the second new ball is available now...

England will be happy with this score already, with an hour still left to go. They are in a very commanding position. West Indies are a bowler down, probably their best bowler. The skipper has passed 50 runs.

Things are looking pretty comfortable, so a good day really!

  17. Eng 332-5published at 69 overs

    Smith 14, Stokes 65

    Top shot!

Ben Stokes jumps all over a short ball from Jason Holder and swats it away through mid-wicket for four.

That one went like a rocket. Power and timing from the England skipper.

Ollie Pope's overall Test average is 35.52, Al, but when he bats at number three - as he has done for the past couple of years - he averages just shy of 45.

I think Ollie Pope is great at no 3, but I'm confused as to why people keep claiming that he averages 45 in Test cricket when he actually averages 35.52?

  20. Eng 324-5published at 68 overs

Nice start from Kavem Hodge, just three singles from the over but, on the other hand, both Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith looked pretty comfortable.
