    WICKETpublished at 57.1 overs

    Pope c Hodge b A Joseph 121 (Eng 281-5)

Edged and gone. Ollie Pope departs to a standing ovation.

Alzarri Joseph hangs the ball outside off, trying to tempt the set batter and Pope didn't take much persuading.

He tried to hit the ball at the top of the bounce but gets a thick edge and Kavem Hodge, the only slip left in place, takes a sharp catch at head height, slightly to his left.

  2. Eng 281-4published at 57 overs

Another tidy over from Kevin Sinclair, just a pair of singles from the off-spinner's 13th over of the day.

Despite the lack of boundaries, there was plenty of intent from Ben Stokes in that over. He might be starting to try and move through the gears.

  3. Eng 279-4published at 56 overs

Thick outside edge from Ben Stokes on the drive and the ball goes away, in the air but high and wide of gully, for four.

Stokes then tries to pull Alzarri Joseph again but misses as the ball whistles under the bat and through to Joshua Da Silva.

The first over after tea, I often wonder what coaches do sometimes...

They are paid some good money and if that is the best tactical theory they can come up with in that 20 minutes, well then I don't know.

It doesn't look clear tactically. Surely you would come out with some kind of idea, something different, or just a very clear plan which you can tell the captain. Sometimes, as a captain, you need the coach to be brave.

  5. Eng 273-4published at 55 overs

Ollie Pope wants to pinch a single from the last ball of the over but good West Indies fielding - we haven't been able to say that very often today - denies him.

Without particularly sparkling, Kevin Sinclair has good a decent job for the Windies today, he's been fairly economical and taken the big wicket of Harry Brook.

  6. Eng 273-4published at 54.3 overs

A change of ends for Kevin Sinclair but it's the same Ollie Pope, timing a drive elegantly through the covers for four.

Pope is a funny one. Constantly bouncing between mediocrity and marvel. He may have an average of more than 45, but it still doesn’t feel like he’s arrived. And how is he vice-captain? Feels like a face fits kind of appointment. As for today’s innings, I’ll be classing it along with Robert Key’s double ton back in 2004. Nice one for the average but hardly one to make the Aussies/India quake in their boots.

    Hammered away on the pull.

Short from Alzarri Joseph and Ben Stokes picks the gap between the two fielders sweeping on the leg side, perfectly.

  9. Eng 263-4published at 53.2 overs

    Pope 115, Stokes 19

Full, wide and driven away square for four by Ben Stokes.

Just the start England would have wanted to the session, less so Alzarri Joseph and the West Indies.

The West Indies team have gathered on the boundary edge and are now making their way out to the middle.

They're followed by the England batters, Ollie Pope and Ben Stokes.

We're just about ready for the start of the evening session with the home side resuming on 259-4.

Here is the moment Ollie Pope reached three figures. It's his second Test hundred at Trent Bridge and with the sun still beating down in Nottingham, he'll fancy his chances of making it a big one...

Chances for Pope today, but he does also seem to be the one who often gets absolute jaffas, Bumrah in the winter and Cummins in the Ashes are recent memories. It all balances out...

    Thanks, Mike.

England scored only nine runs fewer than in the morning session but it all felt rather more sedate, especially compared to the first hour.

Ollie Pope has played several different innings within an innings, some markedly better than others, but it has got him to a sixth Test hundred and he'll be keen to push on again after tea no doubt.

The England captain is there with him and has started calmly. If he's still in the middle an hour or so far now, I fancy we might see a few fireworks.

England's batters scored 125 from 27 overs in the afternoon session, scoring at just under five an over.

They lost Joe Root and Harry Brook to a couple of rather strange shots, while both Brook and Ollie Pope were dropped.

The West Indies may come to rue those missed chances, with England in a good position now to set a decent first innings total.

To see if they can, here's Sam Drury.

  15. Tea - Eng 259-4published at 53 overs

    Pope 115, Stokes 15

Shamar Joseph comes into the attack to replace Seales, but pulls up after his third delivery and the physio comes on.

It looks to be cramp - hopefully nothing more serious than that - and Joseph has to limp off.

Kraigg Brathwaite comes on to bowl the final three deliveries of the over, and thanks to the delay we won't have another over before tea.

Plenty of fortune today for Pope but he also came in very early with a new ball to deal with and has earned the right to now go big. Daddy ton please Ollie!

England nurdle Sinclair around for four singles.

Signs of movement in the crowd, with tea approaching.

I like the way Stokes is approaching this.

He is playing quite late and letting the ball come to him. He isn't trying to overhit and he is just giving himself a chance which, even out of form, is important.

  19. Eng 251-4published at 51 overs

Stokes bring up England's 250, knocking Jayden Seales down to mid-on for two.

    Having reached 200 from 40 overs, they've now made 251 off 50.

  20. Eng 246-4published at 50 overs

Pope is denied for from the final ball of Sinclair's over as sub fielder Jeremiah Louis makes an impressive diving stop on the cover boundary.

England have to settle for two.
