Summary

Will Ben Stokes look to get after Kavem Hodge? The England skipper has played himself in and has now moved past 50...

  2. Eng 324-5published at 67.2 overs

Interesting move from Kraigg Brathwaite as Kavem Hodge comes on to bowl a bit of left-arm spin.

It's his first ball in Test cricket but he does have 62 first-class wickets at 36, which is respectable for a back-up spinner.

If England put on another 100-150 runs and the West Indies bat as they did in the first Test, this could be over by an innings within three days. As much as I love Test match cricket, matches like this aren’t the best advert for this format of the game.

Ben Stokes has had enough. He skips down the track to Jason Holder and tries to launch him over the ropes.

Instead, the ball skews up and extra cover the off side before landing safely. Just two but a signal of intent from Stokes.

As is his decision to sprint through for a single after pushing the ball to the fielder at mid-off.

    Smith 13, Stokes 53

Careful, James. Ian Bell eventually won people over so to mention Ollie Pope is the same sentence might not go down too well.

Anyway, it's another classy Surrey batter in the middle at the moment. Jamie Smith is calmly, confidently going about his business alongside Ben Stokes.

The game seems to have drifted into something of a holding pattern. Who will make their move first?

The Ollie Pope debate reminds me a lot of the Ian Bell debate, perhaps unsurprisingly. Never apparently good enough, even when he clearly is. A way to go before matching his predecessor, mind...

  7. Eng 317-5published at 65 overs

Jason Holder comes on and gets through a very Jason Holder-type over.

A pair of singles from it with the Windies all-rounder holding a decent line and length.

  8. Eng 315-5published at 64 overs

There's a slight delay as the umpires come together to try and figure out whether Kevin Sinclair has actually bowled six balls in the over.

It is complicated slightly by a no-ball midway through it. The TV graphics suggest the spinner has one more to bowl, the big screen at Trent Bridge thinks otherwise and, in the end, 'over' is called.

  9. Eng 313-5published at 63 overs

It's all very steady, standard Test cricket at the moment.

Nothing wrong with that, of course, but when you've become so used to Bazball, it can feel a tad slow.

At these moments, it is important to remind yourself (myself) that England are still scoring at a smidgen under five an over.

Former England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Ben Stokes will be delighted - fifty for the England skipper who hasn't had much form with the bat. I think he will be enjoying himself at the crease.

I don't think West Indies have bowled great, have they? At least not consistently enough. If they had held their catches, that would have taken 100 runs off that total.

  11. 50 runs

Fifty for Stokespublished at 62.3 overs

    Eng 312-5

Ben Stokes raises his bat to acknowledge the applause of the crowd after bringing up his 32nd Test fifty with a single.

The England skipper has looked in good touch and has reached his half-century from 71 balls.

  12. Eng 309-5published at 62 overs

A slight misfield at mid-wicket at the end of a steady Kevin Sinclair over.

Ben Stokes, on 49, isn't about to risk a single, though. He's going along nicely with England in a decent position.

I love watching Pope bat, against the counties, Ireland, West Indies etc but I get twitchy when he faces Australia, India and so on. He looks a way better player than mid-30s average as an England no. 3 after 45 Tests?

    Simon, Exeter

Well, he does average 45 at number three, Simon, and that is after series against both Australia and India.

  14. Eng 307-5published at 61 overs

    Shot!

Dropped a fraction short by Jayden Seales and Jamie Smith is onto it in a flash. He picks it up and launches the ball over mid-wicket.

    One bounce for four.

  15. 300 runs

    Eng 300-5published at 60.1 overs

Close for the West Indies... but it's four to bring up England's 300.

Jayden Seales returns to the attack, round the wicket to the left-handed Ben Stokes and surprises him with a short ball.

It rears up and takes the edge of Stokes' bat but the ball loops over the slips and away to the fence.

  16. Eng 296-5published at 60 overs

Jamie Smith adds a couple to the total with an expansive drive that slides off the outside half of the bat.

It is half-stopped at backward point but parried into the gap to allow England to comfortably run two.

  17. Eng 293-5published at 59 overs

Poor ball from Kevin Sinclair and it's punished by Ben Stokes.

The left-hander just helps the ball on its way down leg and it runs away fine. Four more.

A single then takes Stokes to 40.

    Andy Zaltzman
    Statistician on Test Match Special

Ollie Pope's six Test hundreds have all been against different sides.

It was his fifth hundred at number three and he has become the first England number three to make five hundreds in that position since Jonathan Trott.

  19. Eng 288-5published at 58 overs

Jamie Smith is off the mark with a single before Ben Stokes nails a pull shot in front of square for four.

Top shot from the England skipper but a successful over for Alzarri Joseph.

    Sir Alastair Cook
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

He has played some lovely shots. He has played some cracking shots. He was very hard to bowl at, in terms of not leaving much margin for error. West Indies will be feeling that he shouldn't have got 100 but he has played very nicely.

I think that is his fifth hundred out of six at number three. When he has made the step up, he has been scoring at a good rate.
