Sorry, Steve, Jordan Cox won't be getting that chance again today.

He tries a half-hearted pull to a short, quick one from Shamar Joseph, it clips the helmet on the way up and Shai Hope takes a simple catch to his left to give the bowler his first ODI wicket.

Attention Cox, Calling Cox, Urgent message for Cox - anchoring an innings involves scoring a run occasionally.

Jayden Seales is also working up a decent head of steam, hurrying both Salt and Cox and strangling a cry for LBW against Salt that was gong down leg.

His pace then forces Salt into an inside edge that squirts down to long leg, prompting the bowler to put his hands to his head in despair.

Good start from England. 58-1 is the sixth highest score after 10 overs in an ODI on this ground - they're ahead of where the Windies were, 41-2 at the same stage.

  5. Eng 56-1published at 9.3 overs

Spicy! Shamar Joseph rips one past Phil Salt's outside edge, Salt's prod grazing the ball - but that was quick. He looks to be warming up nicely.

How can you expect to beat top white-ball teams with one specialist batter? Terrible selection choices considering the all-rounders we bring in don't even play List A cricket.

Yowch! Salt smashes a drive back at Jayden Seales that rears up and smacks the bowler in the chest in his follow-through - he just shakes it off and carries on regardless.

Salt decides to go aerial with his drive soon enough, lifting him for a four over Seales' head.

It seems bizarre with so much cricket being played that Shamar Joseph, hero of that incredible Test win in Brisbane, is playing his first ODI. But it's nice to reference a defeat for Australia as well...

He goes for six off his first over, which includes a gorgeous drive past mid-off for four by Phil Salt.

There is just no patience in the top order. Wham, bam and out. So frustrating. I keep reading that the batters are "livid" but why aren't they learning from these mistakes?

Jordan Cox, by contrast, is yet to get off the mark but he looks solid.

Shamar Joseph, making his ODI debut, will replace Seales.

  11. Eng 43-1published at 6.2 overs

Phil Salt's one ODI ton was 122 against the Netherlands in 2021, if he gets a big score today then England should get close to their target.

A lovely drive square of the wicket for four off Forde takes him to 30 off 22 deliveries.

If England are going to scale this mountain, someone will have to find the balance between attack and accumulation that Shai Hope so magnificently demonstrated for WI.

  13. Eng 38-1published at 5.4 overs

England are in dire need of a statement innings from one, or maybe even two, of their batting line-up. There's been a lot of chatter around Cox since his call-up for the Test squad - can he do it in the white-ball format?

Matthew Forde of West Indies celebrates the dismissal of Will JacksImage source, Getty Images

After playing two glorious back-foot drives in that over, Jacks will/should be furious with himself for unleashing an ungainly hack at a ball that wasn’t quite there for the shot.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 4.5 overs

    Jacks c Lewis b Forde 12 (Eng 37-1)

Just as he was looking set, Will Jacks throws his wicket away.

He lifts Matthew Forde over square leg, but he doesn't get enough ooomph on it and he picks out Evin Lewis a few metres in from the rope. The batter is livid as he stomps off, to be replaced by Jordan Cox.

  16. Eng 37-0published at 4.4 overs

Will Jacks pushes a three from the first ball of Forde's next over, then Salt smears the next over the slips for a four to one of the shorter boundaries.

Two balls later, Will Jacks is a touch more classical with a push through the covers to the rope.

  17. Eng 25-0published at 4 overs

It's stand and deliver stuff from Phil Salt, who cracks Jayden Seales through the covers by getting on top of the bounce to one that wasn't too short.

It can change quickly in this part of the world but so far the weather looks to be set fair, unlike on Thursday night.

Liam Livingstone of England prepares to bowlImage source, Getty Images

England are chasing 329 to win and former captain Sir Alastair Cook's had his say on how stand-in skipper Liam Livingstone fared in the field:

This is only Livingstone's second game of captaincy - when you are under the pump thinking clearly is not an easy job. Today he did not get it quite right, sometimes you can overthink things, sometimes when partnerships are building you should go to your strike bowler but he didn't, he went for someone we hadn't seen before because he had the option.

We'll see at the end of the game whether these are the best players, it is hard to criticise Livingstone for his second game but I do think he had a couple of options where you thought, 'just go back to simplicity. Pick the bowlers who are there to do the job'.

  19. Eng 19-0published at 3 overs

    Thanks, Mike.

Salt and Jacks are looking nice and busy so far, but Matthew Forde pegs them back a tad with just two off his second over.

  20. Eng 17-0published at 2 overs

Jayden Seales to bowl at the other end for the West Indies.

Salt helps his second ball round the corner for four.

And with that, it's time to hand over Tim Oscroft.
