The Statman Cometh: That is the third highest score in an ODI for West Indies versus England at home. The two higher scores were 389 at St George's in 2019 and 360-8 at Bridgetown, also in 2019 - both times England won (deluded optimism!).

  3. Eng 2-0published at 0.1 overs

    Target 329

Salt starts positively, punching through a gap in the covers for two.

England's required run-rate from the start of the innings is 6.58.

Right, time to get going again.

Phil Salt and Will Jacks are out in the middle, with the latter doing a bit of shadow batting.

Matthew Forde will open the bowling for the West Indies.

  5. Wyatt-Hodge guides Hurricanes to WBBL winpublished at 17:35 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2024

Earlier today, England batter Danni Wyatt-Hodge hit 62 runs off just 35 balls as Hobart Hurricanes chased down 174 to end Brisbane Heat's undefeated start to the Women's Big Bash League.

The Hurricanes put down four catches in the field as Australia opener Grace Harris plundered 75 to guide Brisbane to 173-5 from their 20 overs - Jemimah Rodrigues also contributing with 45.

It looked a competitive score at the Melbourne Junction Oval but Wyatt-Hodge, 33, had other ideas.

Opening alongside wicketkeeper Lizelle Lee, who hit five fours and a six in her knock of 38 from 25, Wyatt-Hodge took control.

She hit six fours and three sixes to keep the Hurricanes ahead of the target, finally departing to spinner Grace Parsons.

Hobart needed 33 from the final three overs and got the win when Elyse Villani reverse swept to the boundary.

Hope's calmness at the crease is key, what amazes me in one-day cricket is why he has not succeeded in Tests, it looks like he has the complete game and he plays the situation so well.

It was a vital drop by Phil Salt, there are not many hiding places to go against him (Hope). I have played against him and you think 'how do we stop him scoring?', he is so good at rotating the strike.

England do have some hope in the fact West Indies chased down 326 to win when the two sides met here last December.

Although today feels different - do England have the depth of batting to pace a run-chase of 300-plus? Doubtful...

Their 328-6, incidentally, was a record score on this ground, beating last year's 326.

    Above par? You suspect so.

England look rudderless. First time I have been disheartened by a one-day side since 2016. Not good enough against an okay WI side.

It was traditional ODI cricket, you have to lay a platform and then go beserk in the last 10 overs. Its that kind of wicket, sometimes in England the best way is in the Powerplay up front and then the pitch dies a bit. It was more of having to build an innings and that partnership between Carty and Hope did exactly that.

They did an excellent job in setting up 328, which is about 60 more than i thought they might get.

West Indies are heavy favourites, someone in the England team is going to have to play an outstanding knock, maybe two guys to get England close.

  10. 'Hope is a wonderful player'published at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2024

West Indies batter Keacy Carty speaking on TNT Sports: "It's a good total, it's for us to go out and do the right things to defend, and close it off for the win.

"We played well based on losing two early wickets, everyone has a job to do so we back ourselves to do the good stuff.

"He (Shai Hope) is a wonderful player, the whole world knows that and he's been consistent over his career."

Some absolutely mighty batting from the West Indies in that innings.

Shai Hope anchored the innings with his 117, with his 143 partnership with Keacy Carty (71) taking the innings away from England.

The middle order then further punished the tourists, with Sherfane Rutherford (54 from 36), Shimron Hetmyer (24 from 11) and Matthew Forde (23 from 11) all going at a formidable rate.

England deployed nine bowlers, and only Adil Rashid (2-62) bowled his allocation.

Those three sixes from Forde are a hammer blow for England. Archer and Saqib had been exceptional in the last five overs but Forde’s blistering attack has taken West Indies to a hugely imposing total.

  13. WI 328-6published at 50 overs

Mahmood executes the wide yorker and Forde can't score off the final ball of the innings.

A decent delivery to finish off, but 19 came off that over and England's hopes faded even further.

  14. 6 runs

    WI 328-6published at 49.5 overs

    And... six more!

A full toss and over long-off this time - Forde is on 23 from 10.

  15. 6 runs

    WI 322-6published at 49.4 overs

    Six more!

Mahmood sits it up nicely for Forde and he crashes the ball over mid-wicket.

Big runs in the final over.

  16. 6 runs

    WI 316-6published at 49.3 overs

Saqib Mahmood to finish us off.

A single brings Forde on strike and he heaves the England seamer straight down the ground for six!

  17. WI 309-6published at 49 overs

Archer to bowl the 49th, unsurprisingly.

He tries one out of the back of the hand and Chase cuts him away for four through backward point.

Chase hacks the final ball square for single to retain the strike - that's Archer done, he's taken 1-40 from his nine overs.

I agree with Daniel Norcross. This is a terribly imbalanced England ODI side. Extremely poor from the England management. They knew months ago this tour was sandwiched between two Test tours. This is side desperate for the experience of Dawid Malan and Bairstow.

  19. WI 301-6published at 48 overs

Up comes the West Indies 300, as new batter Matthew Forde sends Mahmood's penultimate ball down to Jordan Cox on the long-on boundary for two.

A couple of quieter overs for the West Indies, can they power a few more runs in these last 12 balls?

Although you suspect they might have enough already...

A supremely skilful over from Archer which makes the failure to get the full allocation out of him all the more mystifying. Maybe having nine bowlers has messed with Livingstone’s arithmetic.
