An abysmal hack from Salt brings his downfall. First ball of a new spell, and once again Salt perishes without playing a match defining innings.

Phil Salt throws his wicket away, swiping the returning Matthew Forde's first ball high to leg where Gudakesh Motie backpedals, steadies himself and then takes a fine catch from the steepling chance.

Bethell’s adapted really well to the situation. After an awkward over against Motie, he’s starting to use his feet but keeping the ball along the ground and finding the gaps.

Shai Hope is shuffling his pack now, bringing Roston Chase into the attack. England used nine bowlers, don't forget.

Bethell uses his feet well once again, driving Chase through the off side past cover's right hand for another boundary but with five from that over, the required rate just edges up again.

Bethell is getting into his groove now, he uses his feet nicely to drive Motie past cover point for another boundary.

As for autumnal foods like parkin, I've just been told about black peas - a Lancashire thing, I'm informed, but one that never made it over the border into Cumbria as far as I can remember.

Rutherford's medium pace isn't causing too many problems and Jacob Bethell slices him away to the rope by third as they take eight from the over.

Really clever over from Motie. First one after the drinks break and he rushed through a series of quicker balls that Bethell could only defend.

  8. Eng 86-2published at 17 overs

I used the drinks break to grab a piece of parkin - it is autumn, after all.

Motie's latest over is a tight one, Salt and Bethell only managing to eke two from it.

  9. 'A confused selection'published at 18:52 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November

    Sir Alastair Cook
    Ex-England captain on TNT Sports

While they break for drinks, Sir Alistair Cook was musing about England's use of nine - count 'em, nine - bowlers earlier:

You'll have to ask why he left one over out there of Archer. I have never seen a side like this in terms of you do actually have nine options.

As a captain, you tend to use those options. Are we just lucky that all the best batters do bowl?

Sam Curran only bowled three overs, but bats at six - is he the best all-rounder? Is he in England's best batting line-up?

For me it is still quite a confused selection. If you have the options, when the partnerships are on, you tend to use the options to get the wickets.

Sherfane Rutherford is the new bowler, and there's a distinct drop in pace to somewhere around the "military medium" mark.

Jacob Bethell guides him away to third, where Matthew Forde keeps it to just two with a fine dive and roll before a throw back over the stumps.

Two balls later, Forde has to do the same again but the ball squeezes out underneath him, giving the batters time to complete a comfortable two more.

Motie alternates between over and round the wicket to both batters, who work the left-armer around for five runs.

A well judged half-century from Salt, but England need him to play a lengthy knock here. He’s never gone beyond 61 against a Test-playing nation in ODIs.

  15. Eng 73-2published at 14 overs

Salt's 50 contained eight fours, but his three team-mates have struggled to find the rope and get England going.

Salt reaches 50published at 18:39 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November

Phil Salt pulls Joseph dismissively off the front foot for another crunching boundary, taking him to 50 off just 42 deliveries.

  17. Eng 68-2published at 13 overs

Bethell gets off the mark with three to third, it's stopped short of the rope by a fine, rolling stop from Shamar Joseph in the shade of the big stand down there.

They nurdle five from Gudakesh Motie's first over - they're OK-ish with the run-rate but these wickets are affecting the momentum.

A reminder of Jordan Cox's entire senior 50-over career:

    • A match for Kent against the touring Pakistan side in April 2019, when he was 18 years old
    • Three matches for England Lions against Sri Lanka A in February 2023
    • Thursday's first ODI
    • Today
  19. Eng 63-2published at 12 overs

Jacob Bethell is in at four, and Phil Salt could do with a partner to get on with it a bit.

Left-hander Bethell plays out the rest of the over, and next we'll see spin in the shape of Gudakesh Motie.

Cox had got stuck in that innings, much as he did on Thursday. His shot betrayed some hideous indecision but you have to give credit to Joseph for some clever bowling.
