  1. Atkinson has the ballpublished at 11:54 British Summer Time 12 April

    Surrey v Somerset 43-1

Gus Atkinson is into his second over of his first spell of red-ball cricket this summer.

In fact, it's his first bowling in the middle since the World Cup in the autumn.

Atkinson was on the Test tour to India but never made it past drinks-carrying duty.

It is a decent over until Tom Lammonby unfurls a lovely straight drive off the final ball.

  2. wicket

WICKET: Root lbw b Zaman Akhter 2published at 11:52 British Summer Time 12 April

    Glos v Yorks 25-3

Joe Root lasts just seven balls on his return.

And it's a classic Root dismissal.

Beaten by one angled in, he falls over slightly and is beaten on the inside trying to turn to leg. We've seen that many times before.

Zaman Akhter with a huge scalp in just his ninth first-class match and this is a superb start for Gloucestershire.

Harry Brook walking out already for Yorkshire.

  3. 50 runs

up for Essexpublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 12 April

    Essex 52-2 v Kent

George Garrett twice fractionally overpitches to Dean Elgar and the South African takes a big stride out to drive handsomely down the ground for four.

A wider full ball from Nathan Gilchrist is steered past backward point for a third boundary and brings up the Essex fifty.

  4. Rare Root appearancepublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 12 April

    Glos v Yorks 23-2

Joe Root is playing his first game for Yorkshire in red-ball cricket since May 2022.

The England batter is off the mark with a couple off Zaman Akhter.

  5. 50 runs

50 partnershippublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 12 April

    Warwickshire 51-0 v Durham

Inside 10 overs and the 50 partnership comes up between the two Bears openers.

Alex Davies is in the mood and he hits Scott Boland for three fours in an over.

The last is an contemptuous pull shot as the Australia seamer continues to leak runs.

It's a bit like his last game at Edgbaston - the first Ashes Test last summer!

  6. wicket

WICKET: Lyth c Bancroft b Dale 7published at 11:41 British Summer Time 12 April

    Glos v Yorks 19-2

A second strike for The Shire at Bristol.

Adam Lyth feels for one sent across him by Ajeet Singh Dale and he nicks it low towards second slip.

Cameron Bancroft dives forward to his right and scoops up a tremendous catch inches above the ground.

    It brings Joe Root in.

  7. wicket

WICKET Middleton run out 6published at 11:38 British Summer Time 12 April

    Hampshire 23-1 v Lancashire

    Calamity for Fletcha Middleton!

One ball after the opener clips Tom Bailey through midwicket for four and he's a goner.

He drops the next ball short into the offside and sets off. Ali Orr is not interested and sends him back.

Middleton is in panic mode as a direct hit comes in from George Balderson and he's short of his ground.

Not a good way for a batter to be out for the first knock of the summer.

  8. wicket

WICKET: Duckett c Roderick b Smith 9published at 11:36 British Summer Time 12 April

    Notts 34-2 v Worcs

Worcestershire celebrate taking wicketImage source, Rex Features

A second wicket for New Zealander Nathan Smith and he's now removed both openers.

It's a really good delivery as he gets one to straighten on Ben Duckett from round the wicket who nicks behind.

Not a lot Duckett could do, being forced to play a full length ball by the angle.

  9. Postpublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 12 April

    Essex 31-2 v Kent

Essex are also jumping along nicely despite being two down.

Jordan Cox, playing against the club he left over the winter, has eased three very attractive drives for four off George Garrett.

All sightly in the air, suggesting the wicket is on the slow side.

  10. Postpublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 12 April

    Surrey v Somerset 26-1

There is some welcome soft April sunshine in South London.

Jordan Clark, with a wicket to his name already, gets Tom Lammonby's attention with a real lifter that flies through to Ben Foakes behind the other stumps.

At the other end, Matt Renshaw is on 16.

His mission this summer is simple - get a stack of runs and regain his spot in Australia's batting line-up.

  11. Postpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 12 April

    Notts 34-1 v Worcs

Despite the wicket of Haseeb Hameed it's been a bright start for Notts having won the toss.

Ben Slater has splendidly pulled Nathan Smith through midwicket for four and angled another boundary past the slips cordon.

Ben Duckett has punched a drive for four off Joe Leach at the other end to the short Fox Road boundary.

  12. 'Don’t expect any more three-day finishes'published at 11:31 British Summer Time 12 April

    Hampshire 16-0 v Lancashire

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

    It’s been a while.

Well a week to be exact. Inactivity at Durham has been followed by weather that would suggest we will get a full game in on the South Coast.

Hampshire have left out seamer Brad Wheal from their 12. Wheal didn’t play any championship cricket last season due to injury.

Lancashire have left out Tom Hartley, meaning Nathan Lyon plays as the one main spinner.

The track here at the Utilita Bowl promises to play pretty true throughout the season as the county has a points suspension hanging over them from the Essex game last year.

Don’t expect anymore three day finishes anytime soon.

  13. 6 runs

Bears off to a flyerpublished at 11:30 British Summer Time 12 April

    Warwickshire 41-0 v Durham

Matt Potts drops short and Alex Davies' eyes light up.

The Warwickshire skipper rocks back and pulls it over the midwicket fence for six.

Seven overs gone and the Bears are rattling along at just under six an over.

  14. Play to begin in Cardiffpublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 12 April

    Glamorgan v Derbyshire

Good news, play is to begin in Cardiff at 11:30 BST.

Derbyshire will open their campaign by bowling first after winning the toss.

  15. 'There's a slightly greenish tinge to the surface'published at 11:26 British Summer Time 12 April

    Northants v Middlesex 7-1

    Kevin Hand
    BBC Radio London

Nathan Fernandes is making his first-class debut in place of Sam Robson, who injured a finger in the draw with Glamorgan last week.

The 19-year-old will open the batting alongside Mark Stoneman having played primarily as a spinner in his seven T20 appearances he's registered for the county so far.

The omission of Henry Brookes is something of a surprise following his winter move from Warwickshire but Stephen Eskinazi will bolster the batting having been overlooked at Lord's.

The visitors to Northampton will still have four seamers to call upon while now having two frontline spinners and the services of Leus du Plooy.

If the performance of the Kookaburra ball was anything to go by last week then they will all be needed.

There's a slightly greenish tinge to the surface, which the seamers will have to work swiftly with this ball which goes soft after 20 overs.

  16. Postpublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 12 April

    Hampshire 13-0 v Lancashire

Half a dozen overs and quite sedate stuff in Southampton.

Ali Orr, on his Hampshire debut following his switch from Sussex, has seven and Fletcha Middleton has picked up a couple.

  17. wicket

WICKET: Westley c Finch b Garrett 5published at 11:18 British Summer Time 12 April

    Essex 10-2 v Kent

Big drive from Tom Westley and he nicks George Garrett's awayswinger to the keeper.

Westley swishes his bat in anger knowing it was a poor choice so early on.

  18. wicket

WICKET: Hameed b Smith 11published at 11:17 British Summer Time 12 April

    Notts 19-1 v Worcs

Oh yes, Haseeb Hameed properly cleaned up.

Nathan Smith angles one in from wide on the crease and it straightens, beats Hameed looking to whip to leg with the angle, and crashes into the stumps.

  19. wicket

WICKET Dickson c Sibley b Clark 10published at 11:14 British Summer Time 12 April

    Surrey v Somerset 18-1

    What a catch!

Jordan Clark induces the edge off Sean Dickson's bat and the ball flies towards Jamie Overton's bucket hands at second slip.

But it bounces out of those and drops towards the floor at first, where Dom Sibley gets down low to grab it. Brilliant work from the slipper.

Shades of Chris Tavare and Geoff Miller at the MCG in the Boxing Day Test of 1982.

    Batting - tick!

    Bowling - tick!

    Fielding - tick!

    Surrey tick all the boxes.

  20. Postpublished at 11:14 British Summer Time 12 April

    Surrey v Somerset 16-0

Three overs, four scoring shots and 16 runs.

A pair of boundaries apiece for Somerset openers Sean Dickson and Matt Renshaw.
