Since records began in 2006, there are only two instances of an England captain getting out reverse sweeping in a Test match - today from Ollie Pope, and Joe Root against Dilruwan Perera, in November 2018.

    Target 205

The traditional chorus of 'Rooooot' echoes around Old Trafford as England's number four gets himself off the mark first ball.

Soft dismissal for Ollie Pope. Not the way he'd want his first game as captain go, he hasn't had many runs in either innings. It's come right off the end of his bat like a snooker cue.

  4. wicket

    Pope c De Silva b Jayasuriya 6 (Eng 56-2)

    Soft.

It was going so smoothly, but Ollie Pope has gifted Sri Lanka a wicket here. The previous ball he was struck on the pad attempting the reverse sweep, comfortably outside the line to avoid being out but it turned a fraction from Prabath Jayasuriya.

So, naturally, he attempts the shot again next ball and plonks it straight into the hands of Dhananjaya de Silva who is perfectly stationed at slip.

What a strange shot from Dan Lawrence. He comes dancing down the pitch, flicks his wrist, manipulating the field.

  6. Eng 55-1published at 12.1 overs

Oh, what a shot that is!

Dan Lawrence with a skip down the pitch to the spinner, a flick of the wrists that MS Dhoni would be proud of and it sails through mid-wicket for four.

  7. Eng 51-1published at 12 overs

    Target 205

A steady start after lunch, just two from Milan Rathnayake's first over.

A reminder that the sessions today are extended again, to make up for lost overs. The tea break will be taken at 16:25 BST.

  8. drinks break

    Eng 49-1published at 11 overs

    Target 205

Prabath Jayasuriya goes all in for an lbw appeal on Ollie Pope, that is so obviously sliding down the leg side it's ridiculous.

Kusal Mendis behind the stumps looks at him in complete bewilderment, shaking his head with a bit of sass.

Just one of the over takes us to drinks, with England starting nicely in their pursuit of 205.

Ollie Pope looks a little bit twitchy. He always does at the beginning and then he settles in.

  10. Eng 48-1published at 10 overs

    Target 205

Another solid over from Asitha Fernando, who's been a class apart in terms of seamers for Sri Lanka.

He took four first-innings wickets and got rid of Ben Duckett a few overs ago.

He's sticking to the angle, length and line, but the turn just isn't happening for Jayasuriya.

  12. Eng 45-1published at 9 overs

    Target 205

Dan Lawrence looks much more comfortable against the spin at the moment. Probably not a great sign that Sri Lanka have so little faith in their seamers, other than Asitha Fernando, at this stage.

This is a good mode of attack from Fernando, he doesn't get the ball to bounce a lot. He bowls a heavy ball and makes it feel like it's coming at you fast.

  14. Eng 41-1published at 8 overs

    Target 205

Asitha Fernando keeps testing Dan Lawrence with a good, consistent length on his off stump.

This is how Lawrence fell in the first innings, so you can see their clear and understandable plan to him.

  15. Eng 39-1published at 7 overs

    Target 205

Captain Ollie Pope gets off the mark with a clip off his pads for three from the spinner.

The singles keep coming relatively easily to keep the pressure off, despite Duckett's dismissal.

  16. Eng 34-1published at 6 overs

    Target 205

    Big breakthrough for Sri Lanka.

Can they get on a roll and put England under pressure?

Asitha Fernando was putting pressure on Ben Duckett and now he's got him. He was bringing every delivery back into him. This one went the other way.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 5.3 overs

    Duckett c Kusal b A Fernando 11 (Eng 34-1)

Ben Duckett can't make the most of the reprieve, however!

Asitha Fernando gets his reward for once again being the more consistent seamer. He keeps hanging the ball in the channel outside off stump and Duckett can't resist.

He prods behind to the keeper and there's no mistake about that one.

Clear intent from Dan Lawrence looking to take it on. They understand the potential threat with Jayasuriya. There was nothing wrong with the delivery, it was just a quality shot.
