Rain disrupted the cricket at a number of grounds today, but we've still had plenty of top-class action, particularly at Southampton.

Following four straight wins, Surrey were looking formidable in their quest for a third straight title, only for Hampshire to throw an enormous spanner in the works.

Records tumbled as Felix Organ's five-for helped seal an enormous innings victory, moving Hants up to fourth in Division One.

Elsewhere in the top tier, Kent showed some steely resistance against Essex, and Warwickshire moved into a strong position heading into the final day despite further delays.

Draws look on the card in our four high-scoring Division Two matches, but Yorkshire will remain hopeful of setting up a victory charge at Northampton.

Join us again tomorrow from 10:30 for coverage of day four.

    Middlesex 403-6 v Sussex 554-9 dec

A Jack Carson maiden provides a low-key finish to what has been a very satisfactory day for Middlesex.

Centuries by Sam Robson and Ryan Higgins have gone a long way to ensuring the home side cannot lose this game.

They still trail by 151 but Sussex only managed to pick up five wickets in the course of the day - three of them for off-spinner Carson.

Robson made 136 and Higgins hit 106 off 126 balls but the home side came up short of a fourth batting point.

    Guy Swindells
    BBC Radio London

We've been very lucky with the weather. I think we were off for five or 10 minutes tops.

We've not had anything you can truly call a shower. The umbrellas have gone up twice and that's about it.

The forecast suggested that we would not get a full day's play here.

James Coles tosses one up to try and find some turn out of the footmarks but Nathan Fernandes hammers it over cover for four as the Middlesex total passes 400. One more over to be bowled today.

50 for Nathan Fernandespublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 26 May

    Middx 397-6 v Sussex 554-9 dec

He started the season with a hundred against Northants as an opening bat.

Now Nathan Fernandes is in the middle order and he reaches 50 for the first time since that innings with a boundary from a James Coles full toss outside off stump.

It has taken him 81 balls and has been a valuable knock for his side.

Middlesex need 15 from this over for the extra point.

No can do - just ones and twos off James Coles and they come up 10 runs short.

    Five overs to go.

  8. 'Surrey will lick their wounds and come again'published at 18:15 British Summer Time 26 May

Hampshire beat Surrey by an innings and 278 runs

    Dan Whiting
    BBC Radio London

Hampshire have been absolutely superb in this game.

It was tough to pick a man of the match because it was a real team performance.

Surrey will lick their wounds and will come back again.

It's been a really good hard game of cricket.

  9. Postpublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 26 May

Just three runs from Jack Carson's latest over.

Middlesex need 18 from the next three to earn a fourth batting point.

  10. 'Hampshire have been top drawer'published at 18:11 British Summer Time 26 May

Hampshire beat Surrey by an innings and 278 runs

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

Well played Hampshire. They have been on top from ball one on Friday and have been so far ahead of Surrey in this game.

You just wouldn't believe that one side were top of the table and has been beaten by an innings and 278 runs and the side that as of just last week moved out of the bottom two were the side that have won.

That is Hampshire's highest ever innings and runs victory in the history of Championship cricket, which beats last year's against Northamptonshire.

It's been a sorry game for Surrey and it could have been even worse.

That's two in two now for Hampshire and that will move them a little up the table. From the bowling, the fielding through to the batting especially, they've been top drawer.

    Two wickets in three balls.

Tom Helm tries to come down the pitch, the ball spins between bat and pad and that's easy for keeper John Simpson.

  12. Close of play at Old Traffordpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 26 May

    Lancashire 149 v Warwickshire 284 & 96-3

The rain is coming down here and with it confirmation that play is over for the day.

Warwickshire will resume 231 runs ahead tomorrow as they try to force a first victory of the season.

  13. 'The day was largely Kent's until some late wickets'published at 18:03 British Summer Time 26 May

Kent 394 all out v Essex 591-7 dec

    Ben Watts
    BBC Radio Kent

    Essex get the job done.

In the late stages of day three, we would normally lose a couple of overs for the end of the day so this is stumps.

From a Kent point of view, the day was largely theirs until some late wickets came Essex's way.

The scenario tomorrow is pretty simple. Kent bat out the day, they draw. Essex take 10 wickets and they win it.

  14. Close of play at Canterburypublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 26 May

Kent 394 all out v Essex 591-7 dec

A full 96 overs of play and a finish by 6pm at Canterbury - how we wish for play like that elsewhere!

Kent Day looked like it was going to be Kent's day but those last few wickets probably make it even stevens.

Half centuries from Joe Denly and Harry Finch and a career-best 48 from Matt Parkinson kept Essex at bay, but Matt Critchley's 5-88 and two welcome wickets from Tom Westley have done the business.

With Kent still trailing by 197, they will have to bat again tomorrow morning.

If the home team bat out the day, it will be a draw. If Essex bowl them out, they will win to narrow the gap on leaders Surrey.

  15. wicket

    Middx 371-5 v Sussex 554-9 dec

Ryan Higgins wants an extra batting point for his side and aims to mow the ball over mid-wicket, but makes no contact and is bowled.

He put on 98 with Nathan Fernandes, faced 126 balls and hit a six and 14 fours.

    Hants 608-6 dec v Surrey 127 & 203

Dan Worrall smashes Liam Dawson up into the air and Nick Gubbins holds on to a steepler.

His fun ends on 48 and Surrey are all out for 203.

That's a huge win for Hampshire and a chastening first defeat of the season for Surrey.

We should remember, they arrived in Southampton seeking a fifth straight win, but instead it's back-to-back wins from a mightily impressive Hants.

That's their highest-ever innings and runs victory.

    Hants 608-6 dec v Surrey 127 & 203-9 - trail by 278

James Vince has seen enough and throws James Fuller the ball for his first bowl of the match.

A good diving stop in the infield from Nick Gubbins denies Dan Worrall another boundary.

Three dots...works it down to third man boundary with a late cut off middle and leg to move to 47.

That's the 50 partnership for the 10th wicket off 63 balls. Ben Foakes has contributed three of them.

A single gives Worrall the strike for the next over, He needs two more for a third career fifty.

  20. 100 runs

100 for Ryan Higginspublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 26 May

    Middx 370-4 v Sussex 554-9 dec

Ryan Higgins comes down the pitch and drills James Coles through mid-on to move to 99 not out.

The next ball is flatter of flight but the Middlesex all-rounder has time to flip it to the mid-wicket boundary and reach 100 off 123 balls.

It is his second century of the season and 10th of his career.

    Well batted.
