  1. Aus 120-2published at 25 overs

Jacob Bethell, bowling round the wicket, is pushing through his left-am spin and both Cameron Green and Steve Smith content to play with the turn and work the ball into the leg side.

Smith finishes the over with a lofted drive off the back foot which goes down to the fielder at long-on.

  2. Aus 113-2published at 24 overs

Harry Brook tosses the ball in the air a couple of times as he ponders field changes.

Brydon Carse continues to be busy as he approaches the crease as Australia take five singles off the over.

The most interesting of them was a big swing of the willow from Steve Smith, who toe-ends one behind.

  3. Aus 108-2published at 23 overs

Jacob Bethell is thrown the ball by Harry Brook. Will Australia target the 20-year-old left-arm spinner?

You bet they will. Cameron Green waits for a flatter one and then pummels it from deep in the crease to the mid-wicket boundary.

Steve Smith cuts the final delivery of Bethell's over for two.

  4. Aus 99-2published at 22 overs

Brydon Carse, pistons bulging, bustles into the crease looking to extract something out of the pitch. Not a man, you sense, who holds back while bowling.

A boundary-less over for the Aussies as Steve Smith, 30* off 50 balls, and Cameron Green, 26* off 32 balls, look to strengthen the foundation of the tourists' innings.

Right now, it's an interesting part of the game. I reckon Australia are feeling quite confident! They have established a partnership between Steven Smith and Cameron Green and we know how big Green can go. I am thinking Australia are looking at 330 or 340 here!

  6. Aus 95-2published at 21 overs

Steve Smith goes down and slog sweeps the first ball of Adil Rashid's next over for four. It's aerial but there's no man there so it's a low-risk shot from Smith.

Australia content to work the ball into the gaps for the much of the over after Harry Brooks moves square leg back.

Cameron Green bookends the over with a boundary as he backs away and then thumps a drive into the ground through the covers for four.

  7. Aus 84-2published at 20 overs

Matthew Potts, who must be very familiar with Lumley Castle as a Durham player, continues.

It's another testing over as he beats the outside edge a couple of times. Australia content to knock the ball into the gaps, and farm the strike, in these middle overs.

    Good shout, Ali.

I've been fortunate enough to play at the ramparts of Bamburgh castle. Fantastic ground, and usually a good crowd watching on a Sunday.

Adil Rashid rattles through an over. Steve Smith and Cameron Green milk four singles off it.

Bamburgh Cricket Club, wonderful ground, bathed in lovely sunshine! Not that it’s bathed in sunshine today, mind...

Arundel CC. Fabulous views across the South Downs with Arundel Castle (seat of the Duke of Norfolk) behind it. Glorious.

  10. Aus 74-2published at 18 overs

A bit of communication mix-up between Steve Smith and Cameron Green as the pair look to take a second off a ball worked down to fine leg by the former off Matthew Potts. Both men have to turn on their heels to make their ground.

Smith, incidentally, is 17 off 37 balls.

Steve Smith only scored 11 runs from his first 30 balls. He's faced 30+ deliveries 76 times in ODI cricket - only twice has he had fewer runs at that stage of his innings.

  12. Aus 73-2published at 17 overs

Adil Rashid into the attack for England after drinks as we see some spin for the first time today. If the seamers have found movement, so will the spinners, goes the old cricket adage.

Rashid's first delivery is dragged down and Cameron Green us his reach and muscles it to the fence for four.

Steve Smith tentatively edges one on to his pads a couple of balls later as Rashid finishes the over well.

As my esteemed colleague Matthew Henry pointed out at 13:27, the Riverside at Chester-let-Street is overlooked by a castle.

There are, of course, plenty of non-international cricket grounds in the UK - and beyond - which have castles as part of their backdrop.

  14. Australia 67-2 at drinkspublished at 16 overs

Steve Smith survives a couple of testing deliveries from Jofra Archer to finish the over before the players need drinks.

Am I the only one who thinks England need to find a bowler with the surname Smith before Steve Smith calls it time on his illustrious career? Then we can have the quirky stat of "Smith bowled Smith caught Smith" when he knicks off! I’m sure Zaltz would love that one!

When I bowl against Steven Smith, I do not notice his movement as much. Now that I am sat up here, I think, wow, he does a lot more than I actually remember!

  17. Aus 67-2published at 15.3 overs

Steve Smith rather flamboyantly steps across his stumps and attempts to ramp Jofra Archer, only to lose his balance and tumble backwards on to the turf. Smith chuckles to himself.

A few balls later and Smith flicks Archer off his pads for four. England have a leg gully in place, but it goes wide of him.

I wasn't actually expecting that to be a yorker from Brydon Carse! It's probably as much a surprise to Cameron Green as it was to us.

  19. Aus 62-2published at 15 overs

A bit of blot on Harry Brook's copybook. England think Brydon Carse's over is done but his final ball is signalled as no-ball.

It turns out England have three fielders behind square on the leg side. Oops.

Carse bowls Cameron Green on the free hit via drag on. It is, of course, not out.

  20. Aus 58-2published at 14 overs

A change of bat for Steve Smith as Harry Brook summons Jofra Archer back into the attack.

Archer is full and straight to Cameron Green - possibly a tad overpitched - and the Aussie all-rounder drives it down the ground. Harry Brook gives chase and prevents the boundary.

The England quick finishes with a bouncer, which Green bobs out of the way of.
