Jacob Bethell is at the backward point and if there's anyone who's going to take a blinder in this team, it's him. But it's fallen just short there!

  2. Aus 56-2published at 13 overs

You've set me off here, Matthew.

Mexico's cricketers used to play at the foot of Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City. It even prompted Emperor Maximilian, who lived there before the Mexican revolution, to join in the odd game.

Anyway, a fine bit of fielding by Jacob Bethell denies Cameron Green a four off the bowling of Brydon Carse.

Carse's penultimate delivery beats a tentative defensive prod by Steve Smith, and draws a nod of approval as well.

How many international cricket grounds can you see castles from? And does Galle count?

  4. Aus 51-2published at 12 overs

Eoin Morgan and Ricky Ponting talking on Sky Sports about England's bowlers hitting that "Test match length" so far in this match, and that is certainly what got Brydon Carse his reward with that wicket.

Matthew Potts is certainly searching in those areas, and mixing in a few short balls as well.

He deserves that Brydon Carse. He's bowled nicely. He goes slightly fuller and Mitchell Marsh looks to defend the ball, but he's not quite there and the thinnest of thin edges carries to the keeper.

    Marsh c Smith b Carse 24 (Aus 47-1)

    Got 'im!

Brydon Carse draws Mitchell Marsh into playing a delivery which just has enough nip on the right length to take the edge. Jamie Smith gobbles up the catch.

Marsh has probably played down the wrong line. England are cock-a-hoop.

    Geoff Lemon
Test Match Special commentator on BBC Sounds

That is a flat and powerfully struck six! The sort that you see Mitchell Marsh play.

  8. 6 runs

    Aus 47-1published at 10.3 overs

Fast hands from Mitchell Marsh to a short ball from Brydon Carse.

The Aussie skipper whips him for six over deep square leg. That was cleanly struck.

    Andy Zaltzman
    Statistician on Test Match Special

41 from 10 overs is Australia's lowest score in the powerplay since September 2022, when they were 19-2 against NZ in Cairns. There have been 31 games since then.

  10. Aus 41-1published at 10 overs

A stout forward defensive, showing the maker's name, from Steve Smith to finish the first powerplay. Five dots from Matthew Potts after that early boundary.

  11. Smith survivespublished at 9.3 overs

The technology shows the ball was bouncing over leg stump.

    Steve Smith survives.

  12. Australia reviewpublished at 9.3 overs

No bat involved. On to the ball-tracking technology.

You can see Smith showing Marsh it hit above the pad flap.

  14. Australia reviewpublished at 9.3 overs

Steve Smith walks across his stumps to Matthew Potts and is struck on the pad. It's given out on the field.

    Smith has reviewed it.

After the first nine overs we've seen why both teams would have bowled first, the ball is going to do a bit. We've had so much rain, it's going to be slightly sticky out there.

  16. Aus 41-1published at 9.2 overs

Picture perfect cover drive from Steve Smith off Matthew Potts.

He stands tall and creams it the boundary for four.

Smith holds the pose for good measure.

    Andy Zaltzman

Brydon Carse's first ten balls have drawn six false shots.

  18. Aus 37-1published at 9 overs

A glorious straight drive from Mitchell Marsh off Brydon Carse's fourth delivery which whistles past mid-off to the boundary

Carse responds by beating Marsh outside his off stump, drawing a play and miss from the Aussie skipper.

I don't know how that didn't bowl Marsh, it was so close to the top of off stump.

  20. Aus 33-1published at 8.1 overs

A big appeal from England's cordon after Mitchell Marsh attempts to whip Brydon Carse into the leg side.

There's definitely a noise, but it looks like the ball has just skimmed Marsh's pocket on the way through to Jamie Smith.

Harry Brook made the right call not to review it.
