England have found a lot of seam movement so far: 0.8 degrees. Only once in the last 10 years have they found more seam in powerplay one.

  2. Aus 33-1published at 8 overs

A show of intent from Steve Smith off the fourth ball of Jofra Archer's over as he skips down the track and attempts to whack him back over his head.

It's a fresh air shot from Smith, though.

  3. Aus 30-1published at 7.2 overs

Jofra Archer is a fraction too full to Mitchell Marsh with the second ball of this third over and Mitchell Marsh leans into the delivery and eases it between mid-wicket and mi-on for four.

  4. Aus 26-1published at 7 overs

Brydon Carse is in the latter stages of growing out the bleach blond peroxide in his hair. It will probably be gone by his visit to the barbers.

A solid first over from the Durham quick, with just one run conceded off it.

Steve Smith's form has declined somewhat in Test cricket. In ODIs, similarly, since 2023 he's averaging 33, prior to that from returning of his ban he was averaging 55.

  6. ouch!

    Aus 25-1published at 6.1 overs

A bowling change for England as Brydon Carse replaces fellow Durham quick Matthew Potts.

He begins with a short-pitched delivery which Mitchell Marsh attempts to pull, but misses it and is hit in the ribs.

Marsh crouches, grimaces and the Australia physio is ready to come only to be waved away by the skipper.

  7. Aus 25-1published at 6 overs

Jofra Archer is zipping a few through to Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith. The speed gun is clocking balls around the 90mph mark.

    Three singles off the over.

  8. Aus 22-1published at 5 overs

A glimmer of a run out chance midway through Matthew Potts' third over as Mitchell Marsh takes a risky single.

Marsh works Matthew Potts round the corner and Jofra Archer throws to the non-striker's end, but is unable to hit the stumps.

    Would have been close.

Good confidence from Archer. That was just a fraction quicker, that little bit of extra pace. Short didn't quite control it and he was found wanting.

    Short c Rashid b Archer 14 (Aus 21-1)

Jofra Archer goes short to Matthew Short again, but was this a fraction quicker?

Either way the Aussie opener is unable to get the distance on the pull shot this time, and Adil Rashid is able to station himself under the catch about five or six yards into the boundary.

That didn't quite come off the middle of Short's bat, but off the splice, which explains why he could not generate sufficient power to get it over Rashid.

It's a beautiful cricket shot. There's no fear about size of boundary in today's cricketers, if they think they're going to hit it, they will.

  12. 6 runs

    Aus 21-0published at 3.4 overs

Jofra Archer's run-up is velvet smooth and he's gliding into his delivery slide.

He bangs one in short to the appropriately named Matthew Short, who picks up the length quickly and pulls it into the stands for six.

Looking at the recent results between these sides, it's now seven consecutive wins for Australia, going back to third ODI in the summer of 2020.

It's still a way to go to match the 14 matches they lost to Australia between January 1999 and March 2003. England have only lost eight consecutive ODIs on one other occasion, against South Africa between 1996 and 1998.

  14. Aus 12-0published at 3 overs

Harry Brook sets the tone in the field with a diving stop at mid-off after a rather aesthetically-pleasing drive from Matthew Short.

Matthew Potts responds with three dots to finish the over.

There is something intoxicating about watching someone bowling 150kph. You want him on the world stage, you find yourself looking at the scorecard asking if you're going to reach that pace today.

  16. Aus 10-0published at 2 overs

A decent first over from Jofra Archer who is, of course, building up his loads as England continue to manage his workloads.

He may well not bowl his full allocation here today.

Archer's final delivery is angled into Mitchell Marsh and hits some glove or bat as the Aussie skipper fends into the leg side.

  17. ouch!

    Aus 7-0published at 1.2 overs

Wooosh. A brisk start by Jofra Archer.

Archer sees some carry off his first delivery, which is deemed a wide, before Mitchell Marsh widely leaves alone.

The England quick then gets one to nip back into the midriff of Marsh. Ouch.

This outfield was underwater yesterday when, as Tim says, it poured down all day. I wasn't sure we'd even get a game.

It's coat weather in the crowd but is nice enough. Should be a good day.

  19. Aus 6-0published at 1 over

The final ball of Matthew Potts' over is confidently thrashed through point by Matthew Short. Australia are up an running.

It absolutely bucketed it down in County Durham yesterday but the good news is the forecast for today is much better.

That's not to say we might not have the odd shower at some point, but fingers crossed it does not affect things too drastically.
