Let's see what the afternoon session will bring...

  2. 'Brook working through full routine of strokes'published at 13:30 British Summer Time 2 May

Yorkshire 97-4 v Warwickshire - lunch, day one

    Mike Taylor
    BBC WM commentator

Something for everyone on the first morning here, except possibly for Joe Root, whose first innings of the season was brief.

Warwickshire’s captain Alex Davies might have feared the worst after dropping a straightforward chance Root offered, but to his relief, Kai Smith grabbed the next chance later in the same Ed Barnard over.

Quite a lot had already happened by then. Ethan Bamber found some lift out of a greenish pitch, and his hour’s toil from the Kirkstall Lane End was rewarded with the wickets of Dom Bess and James Wharton, both to catches by Smith.

Bess battled through half an hour as a fill-in opener in some style given the conditions, but would have been relieved not to run out Adam Lyth after an early mix-up.

For 100 minutes, Lyth demonstrated the skill of selecting which balls to play and which to leave, until Oliver Hannon-Dalby returned to find his outside edge in the first over of his second spell.

Harry Brook, like Root getting an outing to warm-up for the Test match, worked through his full routine of strokes from the orthodox to the wildly inventive. The orthodox ones have been working better for him so far.

  3. 'Essex will be happy'published at 13:28 British Summer Time 2 May

Somerset v Essex 81-2 - lunch, day one

    Nick Gledhill
    BBC Essex

Essex will be happy to have lost only two wickets after being sent in on a green surface at Taunton.

Dean Elgar, on his return to the side, and in form Paul Walter added 40 before Walter, showing signs of losing concentration, drove too early at Craig Overton and was caught at mid on.

Elgar looked fairly comfortable before Miguel Pretorius got reward for an excellent pre-lunch spell by getting him lbw, the only issue being whether Elgar was outside the line.

It was slightly surprising to see Jack Leach bowl five overs but there was an indication that this pitch may become more useful for spin as time goes on.

Essex will be hoping that Jordan Cox can celebrate his England with a major innings this afternoon.

  4. 'Tribe leads the way'published at 13:26 British Summer Time 2 May

Glamorgan 105-2 v Derbyshire - lunch, day one

Asa Tribe led the way with a fluent 58 for Glamorgan, sharing an opening stand of 93 with Zain Ul Hassan, after they were put in.

Both were dismissed in successive overs by Luis Reece, but the left-arm seamer limped off shortly before lunch with what could be a hamstring injury.

Tribe, playing his first match of the season in place of Eddie Byrom, drove classically in a perky half-century off 65 balls including ten fours.

Blair Tickner was the tightest of the Derbyshire seamers, bowling to the more grassy end of the pitch, but it was Reece who did the damage as Ul Hassan top-edged a pull to mid-wicket for 32 and Tribe drove down the wrong line.

Glamorgan’s other change brings in Andy Gorvin for Shoaib Bashir, named in the England Test squad despite taking two wickets at a cost of 152 apiece for the Welsh county, while Derbyshire field seam-bowling all-rounder Anuj Dal in place of spinner Jack Morley.

Lancashire 79-2 v Gloucestershire - lunch, day one

After a marvellous sunny May morning played against the backdrop of noise and excited chatter from hundreds of primary school children, it is probably honours even here at Old Trafford.

Ajeet Singh Dale's skiddy pace accounted for both Lancashire owners, George Bell and Keaton Jennings, but Gloucestershire have been blunted since then.

Josh Bohannon and Marcus Harris have been in the runs in April and look in decent nick. Bohannon has gone past 5,000 first-class runs for Lancashire on his way to 36 not out, with Australia batter Harris unbeaten on 21 in an unbroken stand of 56.

After losing the toss on a green pitch, it was always going to be a test early on for the home batters and they've struggled in the face of some excellent stuff from the Bears' attack.

The experiment of opening with Dom Bess probably ended just in credit with his 16 from 26 balls that was as important as a new-ball dimmer as anything else.

The return of Joe Root didn't bring a significant contribution, the England man unable to make the most of being dropped on one and perishing to a rusty-looking steer to second slip a couple of ball later.

His England colleague, and new white-ball skipper, Harry Brook has hit the ground running, unfurling almost his full catalogue of trademark strokes - plenty of fast hands, fast flourishes and fantastic timing. He's on 33 from 38 balls and is beginning to look very threatening.

Jonny Bairstow has largely watched from the other end and will be very happy to see Brook in good touch.

Warwickshire will be pleased with their morning and know, if they can get Brook early this afternoon, they could take full control.

  8. Lunch at Southamptonpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 2 May

    Hants v Durham 80-3

Ollie Robinson is off the mark, nudging a single off Liam Dawson and that means he gets to take the final over of the session from Kyle Abbott.

Abbott, whose figures this morning look extremely healthy at 3-23, beats the outside edge and then foxes Robinson with a change of pace, but the batter gets away with a miscued pull that trickles behind square for a single.

Robinson has two, with Colin Ackermann eight not out.

  9. Lunch at Tauntonpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 2 May

    Somerset v Essex 81-2

It has not done as much as Somerset expected with the green pitch prepared for them to win the toss and bowl first.

Under blue skies for the next few days, this pitch is only going to flatten out.

The only surprises so far being that Jack Leach has got a little purchase and turn already and that Dean Elgar got out having got in and to 30.

Migael Pretorius has bowled well, the pick of the bowlers so far with six overs, 1-14.

  10. Postpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 2 May

    Somerset v Essex 79-2

Jack Leach takes the penultimate over before lunch, Tom Westley times nicely a backfoot punch for four through midwicket to take himself into double figures.

Leach has gone for just 12 from his first five overs.

  11. Postpublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 2 May

    Yorkshire 80-4 v Warwickshire

Probing first over in Warwickshire colours for Australia all-rounder Beau Webster.

The Tasmanian goes for just one run off the bat and showed that dangerous penchant for whacking it down on a very good length from, thanks to his 6ft 7in frame, an enormous height.

Webster had an impressive stint with Gloucestershire last summer, helping the county to the T20 Blast final (which they won).

He's scored more than 5,000 first-class runs and needs one more wicket for 150. So useful.

Harry Brook thrashes OHD off the back foot through point for four in the next over and he keeps his foot on the pedal where possible.

  12. Postpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 2 May

    Somerset v Essex 75-2

Another beauty from Miggy Pretorius just misses the outside edge of Tom Westley's bat, he is making this now 29 overs-old ball talk more than anyone else has yet.

  13. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 2 May

    Lees b Abbott 29 (Hants v Durham 77-3)

The Durham pair won't make it to the interval unscathed - because Hampshire have struck again and Kyle Abbott has all three.

Abbott produces a ball that darts back at Alex Lees and slams into the top of his stumps, possibly off an inside edge.

That wicket makes it Hampshire's morning, you feel. A tricky couple of overs for new batter Ollie Robinson to survive.

  14. Interesting morning in Southamptonpublished at 12:51 British Summer Time 2 May

    Hampshire v Durham 75-2

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

They are playing on a used track here and Durham chose to bat after winning the toss.

Having lost Ben McKinney before the game to a back spasm, Emilio Gay was moved up to open the bating with Alex Lees. He was the first wicket to fall too, edging Kyle Abbott to Toby Albert at second slip, when on 19.

Will Rhodes then joined Lees and added 39 runs with him before a mis-timed pull off Abbott found its way to Felix Organ at mid-wicket.

The wicket came as Durham tried to get going again, having become becalmed by some very tight bowling, in a spell where Hants only conceded a run in six overs.

  15. Postpublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 2 May

    Hants v Durham 74-2

Colin Ackermann has faced a testing start against Kyle Abbott, who - like Brad Wheal at the other end - is a model of accuracy.

Ackermann is leaving alone the balls he doesn't need to play at, but he latches onto a rare wide delivery and steers it to the third man boundary to move up to six, with Alex Lees on 27.

The Durham pair will be keen to make it through to lunch with no further damage.

  16. wicket

    Elgar lbw b Pretorius 30 (Somerset v Essex 66-2)

Migael Pretorius gets an edge to drop just short of Criag Overton at second slip, then next ball raps the pad of Dean Elgar who has to go.

It's a massive breakthrough for Somerset getting their former stalwart 15 minutes before lunch.

  17. Postpublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 2 May

    Somerset v Essex 65-1

Jack Leach continues with one slip and a short leg.

Understandably Dean Elgar is playing him more comfortably with the ball spinning into his arc, Tom Westley yet to do anything daring like use his feet or sweep to try and impress the England selectors potentially watching the stream from London somewhere.

He props forward and backwards defending stoutly enough on this green pitch that has seen a little turn so far.

  18. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 2 May

    Lyth c Smith b Hannon-Dalby 26 (Yorkshire 75-4 v Warwickshire)

    A beauty from OHD!

It needed to be too because Adam Lyth has looked good. But two balls after a lovely, controlled cover drive, the left-hander succumbs to a gem from Olly Hannon-Dalby.

It pitches leg stump, maybe middle-and-leg, with a bit of nip off the seam, and Lyth has to play it given the angle.

It takes the edge and Kai Smith hangs on to his third grab of the morning.

    Here comes Jonny...

  19. Postpublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 2 May

    Yorkshire 71-3 v Warwickshire

Michael Booth is getting closer and closer to another breakthrough for the Bears. He's just whistled another one past the outside edge of Adam Lyth's forward defensive prod.

Harry Brook, meanwhile, continues to tick along nicely. He's up to 15 off 18 balls and is showing his intention to dictate matters, charging down to Ed Barnard but failing to connect with a massive wipe outside off stump.

He's at it again in Booth's next over, backing away and trying to ramp/lift it over the slips. They all go up but the umpire's not interested.

Brook then reminds us that he can play classic shots with a beautiful cover drive for four.

Booth then thinks he's got him next ball caught behind. He doesn't glance back at the umpire for several strides - only when he realises the appeal fails. Maybe a hint of thigh rather than inside edge?

Brook ends to over with another drive for a couple this time. He's up to 22 off 25.

    Plenty happening in that over.

  20. Division Two latestpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 2 May

Leicestershire batter Lewis Hill edges to slipImage source, Rex Features

Northants are fighting back with the ball against leaders Leicestershire. Ben Sanderson has picked up a couple of quick wickets to leave the hosts 80-3 at Grace Road.

Glamorgan opener Asa Tribe has just gone past fifty against Derbyshire. The Welsh county are going along well on 90-0.

Lancashire continue to tick along at Old Trafford after those early couple of wickets. Marcus Harris and Josh Bohannon have taken them to 57-2 against Gloucestershire.

At Lord's Kent are 57-3 against Middlesex, but Tawanda Muyeye is looking in decent nick on 26.
