There is purpose for Zak Crawley in this innings irrespective of match outcome.

So out come Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett after spending a day chasing a red ball around a field.

It is now just a question of when New Zealand wrap up this win. They will have about 35 minutes in this session to eat into the England top order.

Tim Southee leads the New Zealand team out for the final time to huge applause.

Jacob Bethell ends up the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-72. Not sure anyone would have predicted that at the start of the innings.

England finally have a chance to bat, needing a paltry 658 to win.

    Tim Southee holes out!

He went for the huge hit off Jacob Bethell but could only pick out Zak Crawley on the long-on boundary.

Southee walks off to warm applause on what is his final innings as a Test player.

Despite being an England supporter, I'm willing Tim Southee to get two more sixes to reach 100 of them in Test Cricket.

England are showing a real lack of respect for the game and New Zealand here by having batsmen bowling with the new ball. It’s as though they’ve said we can’t win this so we’re not going to play properly and just take the mick.

There is a six - but it is Tom Blundell who carts it over mid-wicket.

After the two in Root's over we have now seen the highest number of sixes (17) hit by New Zealand in a home game.

  10. NZ 444-8published at 100 overs

For the first time in a while there is a bit of life among the crowd as they eagerly await Tim Southee to have a go at reaching 100 sixes.

They have to be content with a single first ball.

    Santner c Shoaib Bashir b Root 49 (NZ 443-8)

49 and out. Mitchell Santner cuts straight to Shoaib Bashir and backward point.

There is a huge cheer because the next man out is Tim Southee on his final Test appearance.

  12. NZ 443-7published at 99.4 overs

Joe Root becomes the eighth England player to have a bowl and is immediately carted for two sixes and a four over mid-wicket by Mitchell Santner, who moves to 49.

After all that talk about the gloom, there is now a bit of sunshine breaking out above Seddon Park.

A single comes off Shoaib Bashir's latest over. New Zealand are continuing just because they can, but it isn't advancing the match in any way.

New Zealand have hit 15 sixes in this match - their second most in a single home game.

Their highest is 16 sixes, which came against England in Auckland in 2013.

Most sixes for New Zealand in home Tests:

    • 16 v ENG, Auckland 2013
    • 15 v ENG, Hamilton 2024
    • 14 v SA, Auckland 2004

Their record overseas is 22 against Pakistan in Sharjah in 2014.

In snooker, a player may concede a frame if they are too far behind to have a realistic chance of winning. Make this a rule in cricket 🏏 right about now!

Good response from Matthew Potts, who draws a couple of uncertain shots from Mitchell Santner, who nearly chops on twice.

Time for a drinks break, which a weary England are probably grateful for.

  17. 6 runs

    NZ 421-7published at 97.4 overs

Mitchell Santner goes for a huge swing and despite not fully connecting the ball has enough on it to fly over mid-off for four.

He connects with that one though.

Santner rocking back and pulling powerfully over mid-off for six.

  18. NZ 411-7published at 97 overs

The New Zealand spinners will be paying close attention as Shoaib Bashir finds some turn, deceiving Mitchell Santner as he attempted to cart him out of the ground.

Santner and Tom Blundell share a couple of singles, and on we go.

One thing to watch out for is the light. It is still pretty gloomy at Seddon Park and if it deteriorates the umpires may get a bit twitchy.

RE Kyle (04:58) - No need for NZ to declare. They have 2 full days to play and unlike England don’t have an obsession with finishing games early so they can spend the 5th day on the golf course.

The Harry Brook experiment ends as Matthew Potts comes back into the attack.

Potts gets one to jag back in to Tom Blundell but the ball somehow escapes past the inside edge and goes through to Ollie Pope.
