On the team strengths: "We have experience in our side this year. Sophie Devine coming in has been brilliant and she has brought nuggets of knowledge about Beth Mooney. Our risks played off today which is pleasing."

On Lauren Bell's performance: "She hits tough lengths and gets a lift with her height."

On Maddy Villiers: "Maddy was outstanding too. She was unbelievable in the field as well. Being skipper to this team is a wonderful thing."

On Luke Wood's coaching: "Luke is not too different to Lottie [Charlotte Edwards]. They have similar values. He is cool, calm and laid-back. He is also thorough with his planning."

On Laura Wolvaardt: "She is an amazing person. She is very quiet and just focuses on her game. She brings class and doesn't focus on power. She has the technique to play amazing cricket shots."

On the importance of the first win: "Momentum is massive. We learnt that last year. Getting that early is great."

After two years at Manchester Originals, Laura Wolvaardt made the switch to Southern Brave ahead of the 2025 season and she played a key role in her former side's downfall this afternoon.

The South Africa batter finished unbeaten on 42 from 37 balls with six boundaries, including a couple of her trademark elegant cover drives.

Manchester Originals' fielding was exceptional and that's what they can take away from this.

There was a cluster of wickets in the powerplay and a slight miscommunication in the middle. They will expect better from themselves but they won't dwell much.

Southern Brave, so impressive in the first three years on The Hundred, had a real off year in 2024 but that's a fantastic start for them.

They look a very strong side on paper and that's how it looked out in the middle today as well.

Southern Brave have been brilliant. They started with the ball really well and took quick-fire wickets.

They never looked under pressure with the bat as well. Their key batters made the most of this pitch.

    Brave 96-4

Laura Wolvaardt finishes the job for Southern Brave.

A comfortable win for the visitors with Wolvaardt finishing 42 not out off 37 balls.

Plenty to ponder for Manchester Originals, especially on the batting front.

Ecclestone did create pressure but was slightly too short at times and Laura Wolvaardt is not going to miss out on those opportunities.

This still looks very comfortable. You have to give credit to Originals' fielding, they have thrown themselves about.

  11. Brave 90-4published at 15 balls left

    Need 5 more to win

The field is brought up to try and squeeze but it's a drag-down from Sophie Ecclestone to finish.

A gimme for Laura Wolvaardt, who swivels to pull it away for four.

Five needed for Brave and 15 balls to get them.

  12. Brave 86-4published at 17 balls left

    Need 9 more to win

    Doesn't look like it.

A pair of singles and a wide take it down to single figures for Brave.

Here is Sophie Ecclestone. Can she spark a dramatic late collapse?

  14. Brave 84-4published at 20 balls left

    Need 12 more to win

Chloe Tryon is the new batter for Brave and is off the mark with a boundary.

A half-volley from Melie Kerr and Tryon gratefully drives through the covers for four.

Play and a miss to end the set but Brave are nearly there now.

That was invitingly tossed up by Melie Kerr. She does that so often.

Has she got anything else up her sleeve?

Kemp couldn't get that elevation she was looking for. She went flat and straight to Ecclestone.

Is there a twist in the tale? Can Originals conserve Brave of runs rather than worrying about wickets?

Melie Kerr has her first Originals wicket.

The home side turn to their other star spinner and the Kiwi ousts Freya Kemp.

The left-hander tries to thump the ball past mid-off but neither gets over it or under it to lift it over the top.

It goes to Sophie Ecclestone at waist height. Regulation catch.

When you get a win, it's about how you can elongate that. These are short tournaments and you have to be on the money otherwise you end up chasing your own tail.

Every game is a cup final from four games out.

  19. Brave 80-3published at 25 balls left

    Need 16 more to win

Brave continue to work in singles, three of them from Danielle Gregory's five and they're just 16 from victory.

Surely, Originals need to go back to Sophie Ecclestone? No point holding her back for end of the innings when the game will be done long before then at this rate.

Originals could be a bit braver with their field. Can they get an extra fielder in the ring? Or can they create a rash shot?

Brave are hitting this around fairly easily at the moment.
