  1. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Trent Bridgepublished at 13:10 BST 24 September

    Notts v Warwicks 70-1

Another light shower so the square is covered for the time being.

    Probably a short delay.

  2. Play resumes at Northamptonpublished at 13:08 BST 24 September

    Northants v Leics 122-4

There is little riding on this match for Leicestershire, who have already won the Division Two Championship with time to spare.

But there is plenty of pride at stake for both teams, especially for a young Northants XI with two players on debut, plus Ben Whitehouse and Nirvan Ramesh - who made their own debuts earlier this month.

Jonny Tattersall (on Leicestershire debut) will face the first ball of the session, bowled by Ramesh.

He's on six. Stephen Eskinazi is 10 not out.

  4. Triple whammy of a morning for Durhampublished at 13:01 BST 24 September

    Lunch: Yorkshire v Durham 63-3

    Adam Lanigan
    BBC Sport reporter at Headingley

After deciding to bat first, Durham will not be overly pleased with how their morning has gone as they have crawled to 63-3 at just above two runs an over.

News of Hampshire being halfway through Surrey's batting down at Utilita Bowl will not improve the mood, either.

While we now know, with 100% certainty, that the team finishing ninth this season will definitely be relegated to Division Two, the spot currently occupied by the north east county.

Three reasons for Durham to not enjoy their lunch.

And here's a closer view of the duo watching their Durham team-mates this morning, sitting on the Dickie Bird Players' Balcony at Headingley.

They will hope to inspire their side to steer away clear of the relegation trap door.

A welcome sight for all cricket fans this lunchtime at Headingley.

The guy in a dark t-shirt and light shorts, dressed as if on holiday, is none other than England captain Ben Stokes as he continues his recovery from the shoulder injury that ruled him out of the fifth Test with India at Kia Oval.

He has been practising his bowling on one of the far strips along with Durham and England team-mate Brydon Carse, who has not played since the fourth Test with India at the end of July.

Carse was taken out of The Hundred and has not played any limited-overs cricket to 'manage his workload'.

And the good news is that they have both been bowling at a decent lick at a single stump.

The Ashes begins on 21 November with that first Test in Perth, a mere 58 days away.

  7. Young batter Thomas looking 'confident and assured'published at 12:52 BST 24 September

    Essex v Somerset 111-1

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

It has been quite a morning for Somerset's young left-hander, Josh Thomas.

Making his first start in first class cricket, having been drafted in as a concussion substitute for Tom Abell in last week's Hampshire match, he has taken an under-strength Essex attack for 71 runs, his powerful, clean hitting bringing him 11 fours and a six in just 92 balls.

After the early loss of Archie Vaughan, Tom Lammonby has provided stylish support in a second wicket partnership so far worth 91, on what looks like a good batting pitch.

Thomas did enjoy one slice of luck, being put down at slip by Dean Elgar off Noah Thain, but for the most part, he has looked confident and assured.

  8. PCA unhappy with rejection of proposed Championship changespublished at 12:50 BST 24 September

    #bbccricket

We told you a little earlier on that the County Championship is to remain a two-division structure of 14 matches per team after a vote rejected proposed changes.

Counties had been asked to choose between the status quo and a new system of a 12-team top flight, six in the bottom tier, with each team playing 13 matches.

Among a number of proposals put forward was reducing the number of first-class matches to 12, which was favoured by the Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA) which has released a statement expressing its disappointment at the decision.

"The outcome of the men's domestic structure review fails to support the demands put on elite professional cricketers," chief executive Daryl Mitchell said.

"The decision makers have failed to ensure our premiere red-ball competition remains a standout in world cricket by evolving, not just to meet the needs of modern professionals, but to provide a product that captures the imagination for all.

"We now need to ensure the best possible schedule can be created in a structure that remains not fit for purpose."

  9. Lunch at New Roadpublished at 12:44 BST 24 September

    Worcs 91-6 v Sussex

Very much the visitors' morning despite them getting the best of conditions after winning the toss.

Ollie Robinson was virtually unplayable early with only Daniel Lategan showing the right blend of aggression and caution to counter.

He finished the first session with a five-for (5-49) with Jaydev Unadkat taking the spare wicket.

For Worcs, Lategan, Gareth Roderick and Matthew Waite (19no) all took boundaries when they could but it was hard going for the rest.

    Worcester: Worcs 91-6 v Sussex

    Headingley: Yorkshire v Durham 63-3

    Division Two

    Cardiff: Glamorgan 114-6 v Lancashire

    Canterbury: Kent v Derbyshire 108-1

    Lord's: Middlesex 131-2 v Glos

    Northampton: Northants v Leicestershire 122-4

  11. Lunch at Headingleypublished at 12:40 BST 24 September

    Yorks v Durham 63-3

Probably honours not far off even in Leeds on a late season wicket as the teams leave the field.

Yes Durham have lost three wickets with the top three gone but the bowlers always looked in the game early and the damage could have been worse.

David Bedingham and Will Rhodes have steadied the ship somewhat with a 12 run partnership for the fourth wicket.

  12. Lunch at Northamptonpublished at 12:38 BST 24 September

    Northants v Leics 122-4

Quite the fightback for the hosts, who conceded 70 inside the first 12 overs this morning.

But in truth they had a bit of help, despite some guileful bowling from spinner Nirvan Ramesh to remove Lewis Hill cheaply.

Rishi Patel will be disappointed with his dismissal, top edging a pull shot from outside his off stump facing George Scrimshaw (2-34).

The innings resumes with Stephen Eskinazi on 10 and Jonny Tattersall on a Leicestershire debut with six.

  13. Lunch at Utilita Bowlpublished at 12:36 BST 24 September

    Hants v Surrey 79-5

And that is not quite what Surrey were hoping for when they elected to bat at the toss.

Trailing Notts by 14 points at the start of the day and neeing every single point to go their way, they are in bother against a Hampshire side scrapping at the other end of the table.

Two wickets for Kyle Abbott and two for James Fuller have been garnished with a key wicket for Washington Sundar who removed the well-set Ollie Skyes.

Much to ponder for Surrey as Hampshire pay tribute to their outgoing coaching team led by Adi Birrell on the boundary edge.

  14. Lunch at Trent Bridgepublished at 12:34 BST 24 September

    Notts v Warwicks 70-1

Warwickshire have battled through a tough opening session with movement and accuracy from the Notts opening bowlers in particular, Mo Abbas and Brett Hutton.

Will Young survives when he was so nearly bowled by a ball that rolled back towards his stumps on 37.

    Rob Yates has 31.

  15. 'Young & Yates blossom for Warwickshire'published at 12:33 BST 24 September

    Notts v Warwicks 68-1

    Dave Bracegirdle
    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

The morning session has flown by.

Warwickshire's Will Young and Rob Yates have really started to blossom after the early loss of Alex Davies.

  16. Lunch at Chelmsfordpublished at 12:32 BST 24 September

    Essex v Somerset 111-1

Tom Lammonby is nearly flummoxed by a ball from Doug Bracewell that bounced more than expected and is nearly lofted for a catch into the off side.

Fortunately there was no short cover.

Josh Thomas is forward to defend against left arm spinner Simon Harmer.

Single off the second ball round the corner.

The fourth ball is full, wide and stroked through cover for four.

He sees out the over and a very satisfying session of play for Somerset.

  17. Postpublished at 12:27 BST 24 September

    Notts v Warwicks 68-1

Just the one wicket for Notts this morning but they won't mind that given the struggles of their closest competitors at Southampton.

Will Young leaves Dillon Pennington outside off stump and is very nearly gets bowled by the next ball, which he has to kick away to prevent it rolling onto the stumps after he jabbed the ball down.

    Good footy skills there.

  18. 'Brilliant from Sundar'published at 12:27 BST 24 September

    Hants v Surrey 76-5

    Amelia Clark
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

    Absolutely brilliant from Washington Sundar.

A bit of extra bounce and he's castled Sykes.

WICKETpublished at 12:25 BST 24 September

    Skyes b Sundar 16 (Hants v Surrey 76-5)

Ollie Sykes has been done by a little extra pace from Washington Sundar as the spinner breaks a building partnership.

It skips on a bit as he tries to push off the back foot and loses his off stump.

That brings 17-year-old Ralphie Albert in on his debut.

The grandson of green baize legend Jimmy White comes in, quite suitably, with Surrey five down and looking in need of snookers.

  20. Postpublished at 12:24 BST 24 September

    Essex v Somerset 103-1

Tom Lammonby takes Somerset to the innings 100 with four runs driven neatly through cover off the bowling of Doug Bracewell in the 27th over.

Very good progress for the visitors this morning after the early loss of Archie Vaughan.
