    Mark Butcher
Former England batter on TNT Sports

Jordan Cox has banked on the ball coming back into him but the ball just stands up off the seam. That burgeoning partnership for England has been extinguished. Not how he would have envisaged his debut innings.

That wicket felt inevitable. Cox had been getting increasingly anxious at his slow scoring rate. A bit of inexperience there, perhaps. He needed to tough out the rough passage with so much time left in the innings.

    Cox c Carty b Forde 17 (Eng 86-3)

Matthew Forde is back in the attack and into the wickets!

It's debutant Jordan Cox who has got to walk off, the third England batter to depart after sending a spiralling ball into the deep.

He tries to dump Forde over mid-wicket but instead edges it high out to deep third, where Keacy Carty runs to his left to take the catch.

Roston Chase into the attack. He took 8-60 against England in the Barbados test of 2019. Two of England’s team today played in that match. Can you name them?

  6. Eng 85-2published at 18 overs

Roston Chase follows up with a quiet over of his own, a pair of singles in the middle of it.

Bar a couple of overs, England have hardly been explosive in this match.

    But they do have time.

  7. Eng 83-2published at 17 overs

Bethell drops to a knee to lift Motie over the keeper's head, taking two runs for his troubles.

A couple of singles follow - it's been a decent start for the West Indies' left-arm spinner.

Despite being three years Bethell’s senior, Cox has only played four List A matches in his career. Bethell by contrast has played 21. It will be interesting to see what this extremely inexperienced pair’s approach will be. Will they counter-attack as their T20 instincts would urge or will they look to take the ones and twos and build a partnership?

  10. Eng 79-2published at 16 overs

Spin at both ends now as Shai Hope introduces Roston Chase's off-breaks after the interval.

It's a relatively quiet resumption as England nurdle five runs from the over.

  13. Who is Jacob Bethell?published at 19:10 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October

We could write loads here, or you could read Matthew Henry's excellent feature on Jacob Bethell.

Bethell is highly rated in the England set-up, to the point he has also been chosen to tour New Zealand with the Test squad next month despite never having scored a first-class century.

He's only just turned 21 and first broke into the consciousness as part of the England team which reached the final of the U19s World Cup in 2022.

He bowls slow left-arm spin and is a gun fielder. Another one for the future.

  14. Eng 72-2published at 14 overs

Four more for Bethell, deftly late-cutting the penultimate delivery of the over to the ropes.

He takes one more single to deep third to retain the strike - that's 13 from the over.

  15. Eng 67-2published at 13.3 overs

    Hello Jacob Bethell!

The young England batter strikes Joseph for consecutive boundaries, crashing him through mid-wicket and then lifting the following delivery a little squarer for four more.

  16. Who is Jordan Cox?published at 19:05 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October

    CoxImage source, Getty Images

Jordan Cox has been touted as an England cricketer for years but is still only 24. He averages almost 40 in first-class cricket for Kent and has a top-score of 238 not out, so he has the appetite for big runs.

He's also played franchise cricket for the likes of Oval Invincibles, Melbourne Renegades, Islamabad United, Lahore Qalanders and Hobart Hurricanes.

His wicketkeeping skills can be traced back to his early days as a football goalkeeper as a junior. In short, he's just one of those guys who can do most things, and do them well!

  17. Eng 59-2published at 13 overs

A first sign of spin as Gudakesh Motie enters the attack.

Cox sweeps him expansively over backward square for four.

England's fifty comes up as Seales misfields at third, sliding over Cox's cut and seeing it go to the boundary.

Alzarri Joseph looks rather irked before trudging back to his mark.
