It will not have escaped your attention that it's 31 October so in the true spirit of our live text commentaries it would be remiss of us not to mark this with two of our favourite things: puns and cricketers.

So feel free to get in touch with your Halloween cricketers. We'll drop them in throughout the game and pick the best XI contributions later on in the game.

Halfway through the powerplay and these two are taking an uncharacteristically watchful approach.

  3. Eng 20-0published at 5 overs

Will Jacks is trying to unleash his powerful drive, but can only pick up one single from Forde's over, striking the ball to point.

Half way through the powerplay and England are going at four an over.

  4. Eng 19-0published at 4 overs

Salt lashes Seales' first delivery straight to Shimron Hetmyer at point, taking two, but can't score off the remainder of the over.

This isn't a bad start to the powerplay for the West Indies.

Laura Brannigan’s Self Control blares out over the PA system. Is this an instruction to England’s openers to bide their time?

  6. Eng 17-0published at 3 overs

First signs of an upping of the tempo?

Two fours for Jacks in Forde's second over, nonchalantly turning a straight delivery round the corner and then digging a cover drive straight out of the coaching manual for another boundary.

Early signs suggest there is a bit of swing out there for the new ball, and even a bit of nibble off the pitch. Forde and Seales focusing on cramping England’s openers by bringing the ball back in to the right handers.

  8. Eng 8-0published at 2 overs

Jacks has to wait four balls to get off the mark, turning away a full delivery from Seales towards backward square.

Salt closes the over with a two through mid-wicket.

Because we are in a transition period it's exciting. Some of these players in the squad are not household names and we have four England debutants. You don't know quite how the team is going to mould.

Who is bowling when and in what situation? Where is someone's best position to bat? It's exciting but a little bit nerve-wracking as well, especially for Liam Livingstone who hasn't done much captaincy.

  10. Eng 5-0published at 1 over

A leg side wide brings England's fifth and final run of the over.

Salt takes the whole over, Will Jacks will now face Jayden Seales from the other end.

I think Phil Salt has to learn how to pace an innings and it's a matter of him understanding the tempo of the middle overs.

  12. Eng 4-0published at 0.3 overs

Matthew Forde's opening delivery is a little short - Phil Salt prods it into the covers.

Two balls later and he's off the mark, striking a similar delivery more powerfully through the ring for four.

I am looking forward to seeing Phil Salt bat here. He's an attacking batter in T20 cricket but hasn't quite delivered when the quality has gone up in terms of ODIs. I think it's a crucial series for him. He's someone who goes from ball one and is a very dangerous player. In 50-over cricket he has to maybe play a slightly different game.

The two sides have belted out their anthems and England openers Phil Salt and Will Jacks have made their way out into the middle.

Matthew Forde will open the bowling for the West Indies - we're almost ready to get going.

Conditions in the Caribbean tend to favour the team batting second when there's some weather around, but let's hope the rain stays away, there's no interruptions and we get a full game of cricket in.

We are still waiting for the new head coach (Brendon McCullum) to take over so it's a free hit if you're a player. If you get a hundred and do well you can get on the next tour, in the next tournament and that's what these players can try to do.

England resist the temptation to pair seasoned professionals Salt and Pepper at the top of the order, but the experimental nature of this team is evident in giving four debuts. Mousley, Cox and Jamie Overton were expected but John Turner’s inclusion ahead of Reece Topley gives England’s attack a distinctly raw feel.

West Indies is a brilliant place to play cricket. England are in a bit of a transition period with Brendon McCullum not there.

  20. 'We want to play good cricket'published at 17:49 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October

England captain Liam Livingstone: "Yeah, we would have bowled first. It looks a good pitch, hopefully it'll get slower later on.

"An incredibly proud day, we've got a group of young boys having a great opportunity, I'm really excited to lead the way.

"We've got four debuts, really exciting day for them, looking forward to that. It gives new boys opportunities, that's what this tour is about. We're here to win, we want to play good cricket, but it's about introducing people to international cricket."
